Never had wood boring insects, it's over 100 years old and only had simple remodels done and still runs heat on a wood stove. The electric is shit I'll give you that. In the basement it's like a museum of how home electrical and wiring standard progressed over the century. >> No.1778597

I'll never understand why Americans build wood houses when they're susceptible to earthquakes, etc. I solid foundation and good ol brick and mortar can sustain anything if built correctly.

A friend of mine had a dry wall house and holy fuck. Everything just feels cheap, you can hear sounds from other rooms, you cant suspend heavy things from the walls easily, etc.

The only pro's I see are that its baby-mode easy to do some interior remodelling/design changes later, as you can nail things directly in to the wall, and plumbing and electrical wiring is easier.

If I can kick a hole through the "wall" its not a house, its a fucking straw hut.

>> No.1778602

i defent them on this, a wooden house will stand throught the strongest earthquakes. brick and mortar cracks and fall down, wood bend and creak but it doesnt fold. there is a video of a massive landslide from around here that washed an entire farm on the sea. all houses stand until they disapear into the ocean. you can see the house deform and follow the waves of the landslide but its completely intact all the way. brick and mortar would crumble at once.

Spotted the american.

1. that's not an official term but a colloquial one
2. Baracken are barracks. Barackenklima refers to moist, stinky air caused by having to many people in to little space as you'd have in actual barracks as well as "Mietbaracken", large buildings full of tiny flats. Both are usually made from reinforced concrete rather than wood.

>cant get water damaged cant get moldy
this is such a misunderstanding. a brick wall is by nature not 100% water proof. when you have 25C moist air inside and -25C dry air outside humidity will creep into the bricks and mortars in every microscopic crack there is, somewhere in the cross section of the wall is the temperature at the dew point and voila you have water inside your wall. that water will take 1000 times longer to disapear, and if temperatures drop even more outside or you turn down the heat inside, that water will freeze and create even more microscopic cracks. give that 50 years of winter, summer, winter, summer and it will look like shit and have drasticly different structural properties. it might hold its own weight like new, but a little earthquake and pieces fall out, cracks open up or walls give in.

There is nothing wrong with timber-framing for a house so long as it's done properly. If you live in an earthquake prone area, concrete is an objectively bad idea, and brick can be bad too. Shitty particleboard and flimsy undersized beams must be giving timber housing a bad reputation in parts of the world. Back in the 40s and earlier all the houses where I live were built with unsustainably harvested native timbers, and they all lasted incredibly, at least as far as the internals go. I've seen wooden beams that are half a metre tall as roof supports, solid Kauri. Only when someone puts stucco or whatever on the outside do you get cracking, since wooden frames naturally expand and contract with heat and humidity. Only now all the old town-houses are being torn down in favour of high-density apartment blocks thanks to the chinks pushing our property prices up, and we've got a fair bit of demo-timber floating about because of it.

America has a retarded law where you have to spend 4 years as an apprentice mason before you're allowed to do stuff on your own. Your house would be condemned if an unqualified mason built it.
You have to have connections in the masonry industry in order to get into it. If you don't have connections, they want to bind you to their company to make sure they don't waste 4 years, and you don't become unwanted competition.
The scarcity drives up the price of masonry in the US, so you only really see businesses paying for it here.

There's no such law. Yes people want you to have experience, but it's not mandatory. They offer stonemason training courses at technical collages that you can do instead of an apprenticeship too. I've been working in the stucco industry for 10 years, there's some crossover with the stone industry, so I've met quite a few stone guys.
