Buzz the sides and back
For 1-3" hair, using your fingers as a guide, buzz with a 1/2" guard. The fingers will add an inch or two. Taper ~3" in front to 1" at the "crown point"
To avoid the egghead look, leave a wedge of ~1" hair running from your temples to the "crown point" at the back. Taper from 1" to 1/2"
You WILL fuck up so:
-always overestimate your cuts by at least a half inch
-always cut in two sessions: the first to get the general layout, then the second (the next day) to touch up the edges and craft the tapers
-find a nice hat

Get a hair clipper like https://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/QC5130_40/family-clippers-hair-clipper key point it has 21mm comb, or is adjustable.
> set it at 15 and do both sides of your head and the back starting at neck and going upwards
> set it at 13 and trim just a bit above your neck - the place that goes up to your ear level
> for top of head set it at 21 and go top to front combing the hair up before each pass
> this will cut very few hair at a pass so do 15-20 passes and see if it short enough for your liking if no, decrease and go again until it does
Also
> DO NOT GO FRONT TO TOP or it will look retarded
> Keep sides/back at least 1 step lover than top
Judging from your pic id go 17 for top, 15 sides/ back and 13 up to ear level. Also you will want someone to shave you your neckline straight at the back, i learned that shit is impossible to DIY.

i have one similar to this (same price range) and i've been using it with some success.

however, i'm worried that it will stop cutting well eventually. how many uses until the teeth stop being sharp? can these things be sharpened, or do i have to buy a new one?

i usually take more than 20, and then i have to cleanup everything. how much do these "decent clippers" cost?

I have no idea, the box says "self sharpening" iirc. I have been using the same one for about 5 years now and it still cuts fine. Given its $30 it pays its price in two months. A friend started borrowing mine once i told him i cut my hair so we got him his own as a birthday gift later that year. He's been cutting himself for a couple of years now too.

Kek good thread bc I actually just got done fucking my shit up since I am tired of not getting the haircut I want at the barber. I use a 7 on the sides, then a 4 to go from the very bottom of my hair up to about Midway then I like to fade my Temple and neck with a 3 and a 2. Today I flew too close to the sun and wanted a leaner look and decided to attempt to fade my neck with a 1 but I fucked up as you can see in pic related where there is a solid division between the 1 and 2 and the upper part of my hair

Use as many mirrors as possible.
As with anything else it will take practice before you start getting good.

i hit my sides with a #3 guard then do the top with a #5 and try and fade into that 1 inch with the #3. Then I get my gf to clean up the back without a guard and finish the back with the #3.

just buy a set of clippers and buzzcut all around like the intro to full metal jacket with the same #1 length insert. No need for fancy shmancy different lengths or fades or other whatever nigger shit, that is how you get JUSTed doing it yourself

There's two haircut threads. From the other:
>Go by feel and look in the mirror when you're done. I have no training but I always do myself and kids in high school asked me. See with your hands. Feel how it should be to avoid weird cowlicks and stuff. Don't measure anything. The final touch is for optical illusion. Vertical cuts are more forgiving than horizontal. Use hands and shape of bone in the skull.

Use clipper guards as guards and not a go/nogo gauge. Lean them on the points a bit and angle for feel or you're going to look like cut grass on rough terrain. You gotta compensate lean for occipital bun or pointy skull cap so, start with steep angle. >>1736295
This is a bird kiss around ears and down and flat at the neck. Follow the bone ridge and sweep back like a comb for the sides and against the grain in between.

fucking true, asked a girl who likes me if she could do it and she literally shaved my entire neck, i looked like a turtle for at least 2 weeks. Get clippers, two mirrors, one big and one handheld and use the clipper guards to do your fade
