Hey /diy/, I'm trying to strip off brass plating from my SLR body, razors works fine but now there are some hard to reach places, are there any chemical solution for this? Pic related.

I assume you would want to use an acid that well known to attack metals, such as nitric.

Depending on the actual constituency of the plating and the type of plastic, DOT3 brake fluid or household bleach might work. I've used both of these to strip chrome plating off styrene plastic model parts.

Why did you fuck up that poor MTL50?

To be fair I have no idea what kind of plastic is it. I've tried acetone (before I know that it was plated not painted) and it just eats away the plastic

MTL5B* the innards are fine the body covers ain't so much, it's starting to have oxidation and the platings are just falling off unevenly. Great camera nevertheless.

Depending on the kind of plastic you may be hosed. Brass is attacked by nitric acid quite effectively I believe

well, that is strange. the plating on the MTL series is known to be pretty fucking everlasting and resistant.
did you submerge it in benzene for a year or something along theese lines?
i have handled a lot of MTLs for repairts and never have i seen oxidation on the body or the plating chipping off.

The original body was great, until my GF dropped it whilst riding (no internal damages luckily just fucked up the plastics bad), so the parts I have rn are from a different body that I found from a dumpster dive, it was it bad shape so why not some customization.

I'm guessing it's PVC or Styrene, thanks for the suggestion

ok then.
the plated parts are Plastic -> copper -> chromium.
the plastic core most likely is composed of polyvinyl chloride - possible brand name: Astralon, Ekadur, Hostalit or Vinidur (etc.)

Bleach didnt work so what's left is nitric acid, thanks for the suggestions and helps bois, really appreciate it.

In case you were wondering, I got a 4l nitric/phosphoric acid mix at lowes. It was "efflorescence cleaner" in the brick/cement products section, might be worth a look and check the ingredients for something similar.
