cheap shaving soap is fine, most of the medium expense brands are decent too, the premium ones generally just smell better

remember that you're working with only one blade. you'll find that shaving at too shallow or to great an angle will be very harsh on your face.

also, with this kind of razor you must do many short motions to shave maybe a few centimetres at a time, rather than long whole-face motions

-Use short, small strokes and rinse often.

-Make your skin as taut as possible. This make require making funny faces and/or using your finger.

-Using a single blade typically means shaving a little more often. Don't wait until you have a quarter inch of hair.

I find shaving at the tail end of a hot shower or bath is best. The hair cuts easier. Or you could wrap your face in a hot, wet towel for a few minutes to soften the hair. That is what barbers do.

https://www.dollartree.com/assured-double-edge-safety-razors-with-5-blades/269383 Get these bitches at the Dollar Tree. Literally a dollar. Use the store locator to find a location, because otherwise you have to buy a case of 36 of them in bulk, and unless you are trying to survive an apocalypse, there is no need. Every once in a while turning the wheel on the bottom misaligns the clamps that hold the blade in, and you have to pop it back into place (takes one minute and two brain cells), but otherwise they work like a charm. Just don't over-turn the wheel and you're golden. It'll give you a chance to decide if you like using these without having to sink 20 bucks on a fancier one. (Not that I've bought a fancier one, I still use this kind.)

Everything that has been said so far, plus this:
Rinse your face with warm water to start, and rinse your razor off with COLD water whenever hair builds up. Not cool, COLD. Ice cold. Pour icy water from the tap into a big old mason jar and swish your blade in, or just rinse it under the stream. The cold causes the metal to contract into a finer, sharper edge and makes for a noticeably better shave.

Different razors have a different angle/gap where the blade meets the guard. This provides a tradeoff between ease of getting a close shave and risk of cutting yourself / irritating skin. Sharper blades (e.g. Feathers) can also be more prone to cuts / irritation if you're not experienced with them. As you might expect from something trendy, there are communities dedicated to safety razors, and though it may take time to dig through them, they can contain a lot of useful information:
https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/wiki/Modern_Double-Edged_Safety_Razors_Ranked_by_Aggressiveness
You might check out something from the bottom of that list.

>>1718117
I like them for speed. I shave dry, and safety razors don't need rinses to clear trimmings as you go like cartridge razors do. But then, I have unreal hand-eye coordination and don't get razor burn, so your mileage may vary. Cut quality with a good blade is comparable to cartridge razors. Blade life is a bit less, but with the much lower cost per blade, operating costs are a lot less. The initial investment is larger, but payback probably won't be very long if you don't go overboard buying into "the experience".

Asking here because it’s been on my mind and is semi relevant.

Are there any electric shavers/trimmers that can achieve a close shave? At least as close as a disposable razor? I have really sensitive skin and always get razor burn, ingrown hairs, and nicks whenever I shave with a razor. I’ve seen barbers use trimmers that appear to more or less cut down to the skin but every electric trimmer/shaver I’ve ever used has been a piece of shit.

>> No.1718349

>>1718346
not really. blade is dulled as soon as it's used, and only gets duller the more you shave. then you let it sit and corrode?
It will only work for you if you use it properly. The main reason cartridges are a meme is because people think you can use them over and over. You can't you still end up shaving with a duller and duller edge. you're better off using a disposable every shave than using cartridges more than twice.

you can literally read about this stuff. Switching to DE is both cheaper and better than cartridges but you are not getting the max benefit if you are re-using blades.
It's literally a DE is you have two fresh blades for one shave if you want to be really good.

There are degrees of sharpness. It's not a binary where the options are "Platonic ideal of sharpness" and "butter knife". Good quality blades can be sharper after multiple shaves than a cheap blade fresh from the box.

>then you let it sit and corrode
Not an issue with high quality stainless blades.

>You can't you still end up shaving with a duller and duller edge
I'm really getting the impression that you're an Idealist here. You demonstrably CAN shave multiple times with a single razor blade. Never mind disposable blades, how do you think straight razors work? Those are a thing that exist, and they're preferred by professional barbers who use them far more than a home user would.

Braun makes the best foil shavers. As far as close, for me it's plenty close enough without carving my face up. It takes a period for your beard/face to adjust to foil shavers, I converted my Dad who used blades for his whole life by sticking with it for a month, after the month he "got it". They're pricey but considering you replace the foil/cutter block once a year they pay for themselves.

How so? I've spent $40 on DE blades in the last 2 years, and $80 on mach 3 blades. I have to shave every day for work and use a DE razor the vast majority of the time I shave.
>They're a pain in the ass
That's subjective, but I'll give it to you. If you started with cartridge razors, learning to not press into your face can be a bit complicated. My first 3 or so shaves with a DE were a shitshow, but after the first few months, it became almost as quick as cartridge razors. But you'd have to be pretty braindead fucking up shaving with a cartridge blade.
>Results aren't as good
In what sense? I have never noticed any appreciable difference.

I use a mach 3 when traveling, because it is objectively more convenient to shave with in strange locations. But the DE is hands down more affordable and does an equally good job of shaving.

regardless, you can get in the weeds if you want, the point is to shave with a sharp edge each time. Not use the same blade for a month. Don't lose the forest for the trees here.

Go ahead and re-use blades all you want, i dont care. My point is if you are having issues like irritation, in-grown hairs, etc, the blades are cheap enough that you can use a new edge every shave for a year for about $20. If you want to split hairs (lol) over shaving 1 or 5 times with an edge, go for it. but if you want to lower irritation and ingrown hairs, don't have for 2 months with the same blade.

I'm fine to get into the weeds about sharpness, i just want anons to get the idea here that the reason why DEs are superior is because the blades are disposable. They were sold so that you didn't have to maintain your straight edge. You are absolutely supposed to be blowing through razors to get the best shaves. 1 shave, 5 shaves, i dont care, but it's so cheap (esp compared to cartridges) that there's no reason to increase the risk of problems.

If anons want to solve shaving problems, they have to do SOMETHING. edgeness of the blade is what will resolve many issues (not all) but shaving with dull edges definitiley causes problems

Should I buy DE blades from memeshaveclub to feel better about saving 2c per day while spending more time and effort on a basic cleaning procedure? Maybe wipe my ass with a series of moist rocks, too?

According to that list, the Mühle razor I got to protest Gillette is a 9.5/10 on the aggressiveness scale. I’m loading it with Wilkinson Sword blades and I must admit it’s a pretty dangerous shave. But I taught myself straight razor a few years ago so it’s all relative I guess.
Best advice I have is that the lather makes the shave, I was a big fan of Crabtree and Evelyn sandalwood soap until they stopped making it.

I ran the numbers for /fa/ on this once, tl;dr if you buy disposable razors from (((gilette))) you'll be spending about $20k-$50k over your lifetime, if you get a safety razor you'll have to pay $2k over your lifetime and have something you can pass on to your son, if you buy a straight razor you'll spend $200 over your lifetime and have an heirloom but you'll have to learn an actual real skill.

Again, shaving with a straight razor is a skill, and not an easy one.

You dont have to spend such a long time shave with or without a safety razor. I have a safety razor and I tend to only spend a couple of minutes shaving, if you mean lathering up a soap bar is what takes long, when Im in a rush I have that canned shit to shave with. And sad cunts in this thread talking about how cheap razors dont last, sure the first few times you shave with a new blade its going to feel smooth and wipes your hair of like butter, but after that they are still perfectly usable might add an extra minute since you need to be more deliberate with your shaving, and now I know my facial hair isn't particularly dense like some middle eastern but I cant imagine that even wearing it down so much that you cant reuse the blade after a few shaves and still a pack of 50 is like 2 bucks or something. And if you learn how to properly use one you wont get yourself cut the only time I've cut myself is the first time I used it and for me I no longer get bumps compared to cartridges, I will however get razor burn at times but only cause I am rushing and dont have enough time to lather up enough or something

Also, don't shave your genitals, it's not worth it. The time invested is too much and the skin sensitive and loose plus when the hair starts growing back it will snag on your underwear. Trim it instead.

Gillette 5 blade razors cost $27.99 for a three pack at my local Meijer, and more at the nearest Walmart, rounding down that's $25 for three, so $8.34/razorhead. You use one per week (Gillette recommends this), 52 weeks per year (roughly), that's 52•$8.33=$433.16 per year, you'll live to be 100 and start shaving at 14 so that's 86 years, 86•$433.16=$37,251.76, and $20,000≤$37,251.76≤$50,000. This does not account for the handles, which Gillette recomelmends buying new each month, nor for the fact that Gillette intentionally designs their razorblades such that you cannot use older handle models with newer razoblade models.

>inb4 but im a soi guzzling eunuch who didn't start shaving until i was 20
You have to shave for less than 47 years to spend less than $20,000 over your lifetime on disposable razorblades.

Meanwhile, I can buy a 10 pack of safety razor blades for $7, and each lasts me three weeks. That's $0.7 razorblade, and there's 17.333 three week periods, so I spend $12.131(=17.33•$0.7) per year on razorblades, across 86 years is 86•$12.131=$1,043.27.

And, of course, you can buy good quality beginner straight razors for $200 on Amazon.

Note that you can buy Meijer generic 2 blade razors (head and handle are connected and cannotnbe separated) for $5 for a 15 pack and I've stretched them to about 2 weeks, I consider these a non-option akin to "just grow a beard bro" as the damage to your skin and poor shave quality make these just downright unpleasant to use.

Well okay, I respect you typing it out, but you're using a couple of extremes and I think you know it. You're assuming you have to do what the company says, you're completely ignoring the average lifespan of a male, and you're intentionally using a more expensive type of razor. If you switch out the type for what my Google machine tells me, then it's 80¢/razor for disposable double blade razors, and you can get two weeks out of one. That rounds up to $21/year. Average lifespan in America is 78 and change, make it 80 since it'll probably go up in your lifetime. I'd say most guys start shaving regularly at 18, make it 16 to account for the Italians and middle easterners; that's 64 years. That's $1350 lifetime. You want to double it so you can do the one week per razor thing? Cool. That's $2700. You want to double it again to use separate razors for your balls? Okay, you're up to $5400. Still WAY less than your 20-50k.

The word better is subjective. Is it cost? Speed? Performance? Honestly the best thing anyone can do to improve their shaving experience is stop using the aerosolized gel / foam shave cream. Get cream or soap and a nice brush.

I keep these DE razors for when I need a really close, super smooth shave. It requires a practiced hand and experience. The product is probably the best shave, at the most affordable price over the long haul. I've got at least half a dozen razors like this, including feather, att, razorok, gilette, merkur, and others. The shave varies dramatically from something like a blackhand razor that is super aggressive to a merkur where you have to pretty much go full retard to get cut.

I keep an electric for travel, and general laziness. The shave is sub par, but passable

I keep cartridges as well, for a quick decent shave, they are good for me. If you get the 3 blade ones, they aren't crazy expensive.

I also keep large and small electric trimmers for beard, head, and body hair type tasks.

And straights, just because. Great shave, maximum effort, maximum danger.

How the fuck do I shave these bastards, not just with a safety razor but with fucking anything

I've got 2 whorls, and the hairs in the whorls lie super flat against my skin as well as pointing in a variety of random directions. Shaving with a safety razor results in half of them not getting shaved while the other half cut my skin up, shaving with a disposable is just a big nope, and shaving with an electric razor makes it feel like all the hairs are getting plucked out with tweezers at the same time, while some of the flat hairs just stubbornly avoid trimming.

How the fuck do I deal with these whorls, short of getting all the hair permanently removed with a laser? I'm 28 and have been shaving since I was a teenager, this shit's driving me crazy. People aren't mentioning the practice of GRAIN REDUCTION.
Wet shaving usually involves multiple shaves. Soap/prep, shave with the grain, re-soap, shave PERPENDICULAR to the grain, re-soap, shave against the grain.
Shaving against the grain can be troublesome on your neck, so just experiment down there.
Also, experiment with pressures and angles. That'll change your shave significantly.
Also, consider your blades. I used to get a Russian brand called "Rapira," but I found out that it's worth it to dish out significantly more (still cheap) for some Feather blades.

Your hair is getting ripped and raped

I buy the yellow bag of BIC razors for 2$, they are single blade and the best Ive ever used. I get around 5 shaves out of each razor and dont even have to use shave cream, i just shave in the shower.

I wasted years and much money on the mach3 shit.

Facial hair and anything activity regarding is of no virtue at all. Removing it or growing it is not, has never been and should not be a matter of anyone's concern.

Yes i im using it years ago. Obviously is wayyy cheaper.
But i did it because of plastic. I literaly waste kilograms of plastic/year on disposable razors.
Best blade y found is schick.

I can shave in about five minutes with pic related.

Spent $25 on it eight years ago; took me a week to get it right, and in a few months I was shaving with it every morning. Got a brush at CVS for $5, and got some Williams soap on sale, like three cakes for $7, and I"m still using the first one.

So, under 40 bucks and an old mug, and I'll never spend another dollar shaving, and I don't spend forever doing it. Super easy, very decent shave, cheap as dirt.

I shave my head with a lightweight aluminum safety razor and feather blades. I like the lightweight as its easy to control with either hand. I use conditioner on my head prior to getting in the shower. Let the steam make the conditioner slick and shave away.

Yep, but depose of the blades properly in a blade container and keep away from kids as its ultra thin shape blades will fuck up kids and bin men

My Great-Grand and Grand Fathers would "hone" the blades on the rim of a glass cup. If you want to go super thrifty this might help.

I think there was a TV commercial for razors where a guy puts a blade in the slot and the house collapses

The reason i switched to de razors is because these triple bladed fucks always left my neck looking like i shaved with a cheese grater.
