What's up beautiful people? I need help for a friend, and here's the run-down of the situation:
This cool guy is planning to buy someone a Christmas present for Greg (Fucking Greg) and has a budget. Greg has given a specific link to the shiny damascus and antler knife pictured here and linked here . https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/tandy-leather-100th-anniversary-limited-edition-round-knife but also has other things on their list. What Cool Guy wants to know is this: obviously this knife is very fancy and probably extremely good. But is it SO much better than a $150 round knife that it's worth not getting anything else on the wishlist, or is it going to be roughly equivalent to another cheaper knife, and you're just paying for the aesthetic? He asked me for help but I was all, "Bro, I'm a woodworker; I 'unno. I'll try to reach out to folks though."
tldr; is this the only roundknife you'll ever need to buy because it's perfect, or is it just a pretty version of a cheaper one?

Ulus, we make them out of hand wood saw and use old caribou antlers for a handle.

>or is it just a pretty version of a cheaper one?
>This specially commissioned Tandy Leather 100th anniversary round knife is one of only 400 in a limited edition.
>Embedded in the handle is the silver-plate limited-edition plate, including each knife’s unique number.
It's clearly aiming for the market of people who want to pay extra for things that are fancy and not just functional. Pretty aesthetic, but if your friend isn't one of those people, it's probably not worth it. I'd browse some leatherworking forums to see what people think is a good quality option. Functionally speaking, I suspect that the antler handle is worse than a wood handle due to the roughness, and leatherwork isn't a very demanding application, so the advantage of Damascus steel (good edge retention while maintaining good impact resistance) isn't very beneficial over something like high carbon steel or 400 series stainless.

Nah, just piece of tool steel will be just fine, maybe not as pretty.
Think the most whack present I ever made on request was for someone's grand dad who was a tradesman and going into retirement, he got a pattern welded/raindrop pattern paint scraper with a bocote handle. The Ulu >>1713045 is a good idea too, you can buy those as a knife blank and just fit whatever handle you want, should be much cheaper

Leatherworker here. about 50% of my stuff is for leather bondage gear, 20% utilitarian shit (i.e. toolbelts and shit), and 30% fur accessories and outerwear.

I would NEVER spend that money on a fucking round knife. I'm sure it's a nice blade. But that's not something you're going to buy and use day in and day out. That is a fucking collector's item for Tandy Leather fans.

I'm not knocking it. I get it. I'm a Tandy Leather fan myself. It's a collector's item. If Greg is thinking of using it that's like opening up a Limited edition Star Wars Luke Skywalker action figure and letting your cheetoh dust covered nephew play with it.

If Greg wants a round knife for utility then get him a fucking Stohlman and be done with it. They're good steel, they hold an edge, and the best part is you don't have to fucking make one. They're worth every penny of the $50. the limited edition does not miraculously bestow any magical powers justifying the extra $175...unless he wants to, you know... collect Tandy memorabilia.......

For what it's worth... My favorite round knife I use day in and day out, and reach for without fail, I cut out of a harbor freight table saw blade that I used to rip through some old timber that had embedded nails. Seriously, I'd be hard pressed to walk into my workshop and even remember where I left my stohlman

how many cutting discs did it take to go through all that?

2 full ones and a partial one. Once you get the angle and depth just right it won't eat up the disc much. If they throw powder then they are eating the discs fast. If they throw tons of sparks then they are doing well enough. You can get a 100 discs on ebay for like $10 & free shipping, but you may need to wait a month to get them.

did Greg by chance also ask for a pillow?
because if he did, I can say with 100% certainty he was joking, and he shouldn't "chomp" on any bullets at his expense.
