It all started with a free (with any purchase) multi meter coupon in the newspaper. I carefully cut it out and drove down to the local harbor freight. I found the cheapest item in the store, a 77 cent paint brush, and bought it to claim my free multi meter.

This was the start of a mad free-coupon obsession. For months, I soured the Internet, newspaper, local penny saver ads, magazine ads, etc., for every free Harbor Freight coupon I could find. They are all over the place! I amassed a nice stack, sorted by free gift type.

I was not allowed to use more than one coupon per purchase so I started going twice a day, once on the way to work and once on the way back. They started to recognize me and put up a big sign at the cashier stating one person could only use one coupon once a day.

Thursday night was soccer practice night and the store was right next to an ice cream shoppe, so I started bringing my wife, kids, and their soccer friends, to the store every Thursday after practice - each person armed with one dollar and one coupon. The store then put up a big sign next to the other sign stating you had to be at least 18 years old to use the coupons. They started to ask for valid ID from anyone I brought to the store, even people clearly older than 18 (like my father).

Every two weeks, my oldest child drives home from college to do laundry and buy groceries. The supermarket is in the same shopping center as Harbor Freight. I started taking her, and her college friends, to the store every two weeks. They brought their IDs and I provided the dollar and coupon. College kids think this is funny as hell, and that I'm crazy.

This went on for a while until a few weeks ago. Now, all the coupons coming out require at least a purchase of $4.95 to claim the free gift. At 77 cents, it's worth getting free crap I don't need, but at $4.95, it's not funny any more.

I am now defeated. No more regular excursions to Harbor Freight.

Final tally: 49 Centech multi meters, 23 magnetic metal trays, 31 black LED mini-flashlights, and 38 retracting 25' tape measures... and a small box filled with $0.77 paint brushes.

Good job bro. I got to like a dozen blue lights and 5 meters and gave up. The blue lights are fun to take apart and play with the LED strips.

They haven’t been giving our the meters and tape measures like they used to. 90% of the time the only free coupons with weekend sales are the blue lights, and those have been getting cheaper and cheaper.

You do realise that you could get the multimeters, flashlights and other crap on aliexpress for a dollar?
Business isn't losing money just because you use the coupon. They just guilt you so you would feel bad and maybe spend money on overpriced shit.

I paid for my multi-meter. It's $5. I got a blue LED light for free. Harbor Freight is the shit. Also, I bought a farm jack for $60 and a reciprocating saw for $30. Hands down the best store for a newbie DIYer.

Show stack of multimeters. This was dumb though anon, there's a reason they give them away for free- they're detonation grade. If you blow one up, or it blows up; you don't care.
