I want to learn how to make fish hooks, not for any practical reason but more just to add a skill under my belt.

Are there any good resources for this? I want to make average wire thin hooks with needle sharp points, but i dont know where to start.

do you really need someone to tell you how to bend a steel wire?

Dremel out a die from harded steel. Aneal some wire with a torch. Grab a hammer and punch out 50 hooks. Trim them up, get them yellow hot drop em in water.

More specifically I need someone to point me in the direction of what steel wire I should use.

what size hook do you want to make. Go to a hardware store and have a look. For god's sake man. Embrace some manly gusto and have a go.

Buy them from chinkland for 5 cents a piece.

Wait a minute guys, OP may be onto something here. He could get say, .020" drill rod, hand bend it into a hook with and eye and everything, harden and temper it, and sell them for $3-$5 each to hipsters. I'm only half shit posting here, I think there may be enough dumbasses out there that would buy this shit.

It would be easy enough to make the hook like that, but what about the barb? Maybe hipsters buying "handmade" hooks wouldn't care, though.

Couple of licks with a needle file, possibly use a form (a fuller basically) and smack it with a hammer as your first step in production, advertise it as rustic.

That’s the other part I’m trying to figure out, I need a wire stock that can be heat treated to support the weight of a fish, and I need to figure out how to make sharp barbs,

>>1686082
Just use nails as your stock and use a chisel to make a cut about 1/2 through the nail for a barb.

This thread got me curious so I tried making one myself with a 0.5 mm wire.
Flattened it with a hammer and used a wire cutter to make the barb.

The barb might be a little big, but it could work.

It is just like making a knife. You'll need the right type of wire, anneal it, shape it, harden, and temper it.

Claim they are optimized for "catch and release" and won't harm the fish as much without barb.

Piano wire or sewing needles would make good strong hooks

>>1688482
That's not diy though and I think the larger profile of the hook would make it less effective at getting fish to bite.
