Not really. If anon wastes the time making a house call and it’s clearly stated that there is a 1 hour minimum, they’re going to charge you that hour as soon as anon sets eyes on the outlet.

Remember how businesses work... a receptionist and/or dispatcher has to take that call and send somebody out. anon has to drive to and from that call, he needs to write up an invoice for it, other employees at the office need to take care of the billing, plus all the overhead any business requires.

If the screw was loose and OP said he had to replace the whole thing and bills you for half a day while he was sitting at Wendy’s, that would be fraud.

I can answer this one. If you do something that they immediately think they could've done themselves they feel like an idiot and already don't want to pay you what they AGREED to pay you when they approved the service call. In come the groans and unnecessary questions about my qualifications and angling for a discount any way they can because in spite of them agreeing to it when they were hot I fixed it SO EASILY and so quickly (once I got there and was fully aware of the problem so basically 30min burned already, at least twice that for out of town) and now they're not hot anymore so they now feel my time isn't worth what we originally agreed. It's a whole lot easier if I can point to a catastrophic problem like an exploded capacitor or a compressor with a hole blown out the electrical.

I have this happen all the time, but it's a bit different when I work with mostly tenants/landlords/maintenance companies. The landlord doesn't want to pay any money for anything and often thinks of the tenants as cockroaches that would be better off roasting in the sun, the tenants always want a brand new shiny and efficient whatever because it's in the county code somewhere that the current one is bla bla even though it's working great, and the maintenance companies are usually full of women that know very little about anything besides customer relations and need to be coached through things. Stick me in the middle just trying to fix what needs to be fixed, replace what needs to be replaced, and not get fucked in the process i.e. getting paid what I've pinned down as my value in my market.

I could build a temple to the idiots of the world with all the wooden nickels, if I had a wooden nickel for each time I walked in and did an easy fix too quick for their liking. The world is so dishonest that honest people see lies everywhere, and dishonest people just call everything lies anyways. I get it, and that's why we put on a show for some of the quicker jobs.

Is this some skewed case of goalpost moving? The first guy wasn't honest but didn't really do anything wrong. He would've gotten paid the exact same amount even if it went to court, and he saved everyone involved a headache by just twiddling his fingers for a few minutes.

The second guy did legitimate fraud, but I would say he did so intelligently in a way in which he could cover his tracks easily. What's to say he didn't do the work he said he did? Is the client going to hire some world class inspector for $500/hr to come check out their house and carefully inspect whether the wires "look re-attached?"

Attorney here. Depends on state of course, but if someone came to me and could actually prove this guy flipped a breaker switch and falsely billed them while taking lunch hour, I'd probably just file a small claims action and demand the limit in punitive damages. Problem is that in most cases you can't really prove it.

With that said, no attorney should be charging more than they get their client in circumstances like this. You'd either take it as pro bono or as a near pro bono. If the attorney you consult wants more than you can get then it's time to look elsewhere.

I just don't feel as though 1 random client who feels cheated will qualify as that worthy cause.

Maybe an Erin Brockovich type scenario would be... where a company as a whole is literally killing people, but joe homeowner who is too stupid to reset a gfci isnt one of those, besides now you are trying to cheat joe tradesman who had to go to school, buy tons of tools and spend years in the trade in order to quickly trouble shoot problems ... isn't his time worth something? and who are you to determine what his time is worth? After all he had to get in his vehicle, leave the job he was on putting production behind there, spend however long driving to homeowners house, spend some time to check said outlet, find the gfci, reset it, write up the invoice, then came the unpaid part where he drives back to the job he left.. this dude probably spent 2 hours on that 1 hour service call and slowed down some other job which will now require overtime to catch back up.

sounds like normal cost of business to me... but hey I havent met to many lawyers who charge less than $300/hr.

When you people become adults, you will understand why anon took the time to “fix the issue” instead of flipping a switch and having a customer who is pissed off. That customer got charged the minimum amount possible to have somebody come out and fix their problem.

There are two possible Yelp reviews:
>Wow! This company sent a tech to fix my outlet and he was able to get the job done in less than an hour and I didn’t even have to pay extra for any parts. $200 for the house call was very reasonable, other companies wanted to spend half a day replacing things that weren’t broken. Would give 5 stars but the tech smelled like Cheetos and lubricant. 4 stars!
Or
>This company is a ripoff! They charged me over $200 for some guy to flip a switch! Would give zero stars if I could because the tech smelled like day old Astroglide and Cheetos. 1 Star.

It's well within the customer's right to leave a negative review since 200 does seem like a lot for flipping a switch. If you don't want negative reviews, you could try to explain it better to them over the phone. Tell them that they'll be charged for the trip and for an hour of work no matter how simple the job is. It really surprises me how entitled you trade workers behave.

you can and maybe more.

In my state it takes 4 years of working and accumulating 8000 hours... your OT will not count towards the 8000 insuring you do 4 full years.
next you have to go to school and get like 600 classroom hours.. so 1 night a week for 4 years... easy as fuck
now you can test to get that jman card
Then you need to get your masters license which typically requires 1 year of having a jman card and doing layout for others... oh and another test
If you get that, now you have to carry atleast $1,000,000 in insurance and apply for a business license which may require some classes/fees ect depending on where you are at.
Then you will need to figure out how much money you need to make per day in order to pay all the other bills, warehouse/office rental, paying for that new van, tools that your old company had but you don't, gas, vehicle insurance, marketing, materials for the jobs, safety equipment... it keeps going on and on
now if you get all that you can finally pay yourself that $100/hr to push the fucking button and reset the gfci for the dumb cunt wasting your time with a small service call when real money needs to be made.

Or assembly lines for factories, I have heard the budwiser plants have ladder diagrams that are in the million lines range, or food processing, hazardous locations like water treatment have a lot of complications to them too.

thing about the complicated ones is there are more places to screw up and lose money.

Incredible. The closest I have seen to that was an old house where they added a duct for some weird reason, and they ran it around a room close to the floor, framed it in and sheetrocked over it, added baseboard and shoe molding so that it looked really nice. Nobody seemed to care that it totally covered the access panel to the bathtub fixture on the other side of the wall. Re-read this about 20 times. Let it sink in. If you really dealt with customers day in and day out, you would understand. Sometimes you have to do BS to make the customer happy, even when the customer doesn't understand it. When the customer is complaining about utter BS. psychology can make you and the customer have a better day. Extra credit: Old TV repairman trick, when the customer kept calling you back to their house because "the color just wasn't right", was to sit behind the TV pretend to turn knobs, and ask "is that right yet?" and after a couple of "no too red no too green", eventually they would say "yeah thats it!" and they would be happy. Double extra credit: Your statement about what you would do if you were something you aren't is similar tot he way super rich left wingers form their opinions based on a super rich liberal education, when they have never actually had a job or lived around ordinary people.

I'll never use another AC guy now. I trust this guy, and I've told others that use him now too.

Also cases like this are the minority anyway and don't happen super often

I had that attitude 10 years ago towards my boss.
>hey man why don't you just tell them everything and let them decide

Then I tried it for awhile. It works great! with about half of clients. The other half start beating the contractor up about whatever they can because they feel cheated and they still haven't paid yet, so why should they pay the full amount that they agreed to originally, when circumstances have changed in their favor? It's like raising your hands in the air during a standoff and expecting the other guy to just follow suit. Still deciding whether full truth is worth it, right now I'm managing with just telling them ONLY what they need to know.

We get business pretty much only this way, no ads just word of mouth. I still get totally hounded by about a quarter of the people I'm honest with if it's a false alarm, especially DIY types or guys who think they should've known it because of their field. They'll HATE that they didn't know a simple problem and frankly I can't interrupt their lecture about freon, or how their abuela is an AC tech so they know my warehouses prices and here's what they're willing to pay - my actual overhead be damned.

You don't call an ambulance and go "oh oops sorry nope false alarm send it back before they charge us and maybe they'll show us how to draw blood while they're out here" why in the fuck do you value your fathers time so poorly? I hope he had food on the table with that kind of crap, unless we're talking like inflation $5.
