I can answer this one. If you do something that they immediately think they could've done themselves they feel like an idiot and already don't want to pay you what they AGREED to pay you when they approved the service call. In come the groans and unnecessary questions about my qualifications and angling for a discount any way they can because in spite of them agreeing to it when they were hot I fixed it SO EASILY and so quickly (once I got there and was fully aware of the problem so basically 30min burned already, at least twice that for out of town) and now they're not hot anymore so they now feel my time isn't worth what we originally agreed. I have this happen all the time, but it's a bit different when I work with mostly tenants/landlords/maintenance companies. The landlord doesn't want to pay any money for anything and often thinks of the tenants as cockroaches that would be better off roasting in the sun, the tenants always want a brand new shiny and efficient whatever because it's in the county code somewhere that the current one is bla bla even though it's working great, and the maintenance companies are usually full of women that know very little about anything besides customer relations and need to be coached through things. Stick me in the middle just trying to fix what needs to be fixed, replace what needs to be replaced, and not get fucked in the process i.e. getting paid what I've pinned down as my value in my market.

I could build a temple to the idiots of the world with all the wooden nickels, if I had a wooden nickel for each time I walked in and did an easy fix too quick for their liking. The world is so dishonest that honest people see lies everywhere, and dishonest people just call everything lies anyways. I get it, and that's why we put on a show for some of the quicker jobs.

Depends on state of course, but if someone came to me and could actually prove this guy flipped a breaker switch and falsely billed them while taking lunch hour, I'd probably just file a small claims action and demand the limit in punitive damages. Problem is that in most cases you can't really prove it.

The closest I have seen to that was an old house where they added a duct for some weird reason, and they ran it around a room close to the floor, framed it in and sheetrocked over it, added baseboard and shoe molding so that it looked really nice. Nobody seemed to care that it totally covered the access panel to the bathtub fixture on the other side of the wall. When they need to replace that fixture it's gonna cost another thousand dollars on top of the usual plumbing fee.
