So, I'm going to votech for heavy diesel, and am looking at buying tools, and was looking at this Husky set. Seems like a good deal for the shit I need to get started, and can acquire the special tools later. I've already got a 20" box with basic shit, and some cordless tools, so it's not like I'm starting from scratch.

I could get a student discount from one of the tool truck guys, but this husky set's only a grand, and won't leave me paying off the truck guy for the next 10 years, otherwise my local napa's got a student discount on their carlyle tools i was also considering.

Thoughts and/or advice?

1000 piece set. 600 bits & allen keys.

Looks fine, save the tool truck discount for some specialty tools. In the 5+ years I have been at my job, I have seen a bunch of diesel mechanics come and go and most of them use Craftsman-Husky tier sockets and wrenches. There has only been one real Snappy Boi and he doesn’t get the job done any better than the others.

superficial advice from a superficial moron. people with any brains at all don't judge you by your fucking tools ON THE FIRST DAY IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. They talk to you. They observe you. They see how well you pay attention, follow directions, learn, and get along with others.

Don’t buy a set like that, just buy what you know you’ll need right now and add to it as you go. It’s a little inconvenient but you’ll have a lot less waste in your box.

t. Dumbass that bought a craftsman master mechanic set in 2002 and ended up using under half of the tools in 15yrs of use.

Nigger, did you even LOOK at the student pricing?
Snap-On student pricing is like 75% off.

People can argue that Snap-On isnt worth the price for the home gamer.
Some people try to argue that the quality and lifetime warranty for a mechanic isnt really worth it.

But you are doing HEAVY DIESEL, and you are getting a GIANT discount. And you still want to pay full fucking price for husky?
Matco and Snap-On have the best student discounts. Mac and Cornwell discounts blow, dont even bother talking to them.

You will kick yourself for the rest of your career if you dont buy tool truck brands at discount while you can.
That husky set isnt even extensive, it just has a bunch of different ratcheting wrenches which you most likely wont use.
Dont be lazy, figure out what you actually need, and then buy it from Snap-On. Youll have your whole duration of school to do it, going a grand in the hole immediately isnt going to help.

Are you telling OP the diesel tech that he wont need
>ratcheting wrenches
>flex head ratcheting wrenches
>stubby ratcheting wrenches
>small set of reversible ratcheting wrenchs
>ignition point wrenches

In addition to the regular wrenches and regular stubby wrenches?

What a great set

They throw in a few extra things that people bitch about like the folding hex keys, but OP will definitely want like more than half of that set right away. A comprehensive socket set with all 3 drives deep and shallow, plus the flex head ratchets, extensions and u-joints, ratcheting combination wrenches, and box wrenches will all add up to at least the cost of that set so the rest is kind of a bonus.

There’s some Klutch sets from Northern Tool that are good starter sets as well.

>> No.1621341

>>1621335
These are NOT good starter sets for a heavy diesel mechanic.

He will be using 1/2 the majority of the time, he will be using the upper sizes of wrenches most of the time.
He will never touch a 1/4 ratchet, or use 75% of the smaller wrenches (which happens to be all of the ratcheting ones in the OP)

When I started a ASEP program, the syllabus laid out what tools I needed. And the tool truck dealers had sets that were tailored to the class.
He needs to hold his horses and buy quality when he knows what he needs.

Sets that barely have any 1/2 but include fucking ignition wrenches are a waste of money.

>Thoughts and/or advice?
get what you can from estates sales, or used. save money where you can. i doubt you would use more than half of that set as a diesel tech. spend the money you save, by buying used, on things that matter, get a good torque wrench, and a good impact that will last you.

Dude they are hard as hell on their tools. You are going to snap that Husky stuff in half. Hard as hell on their bodies to. All your joints will be fucked by 40yr old.

It's literally fucking Home Depot brand now. When I worked there last year, I would occasionally kill time on break by browsing the tools section, and the quality of Husky shit was pure cringe. I don't mean from an aesthetic/handle standpoint, either. The contact points of wrenches were so badly misshapen I would never have used them on anything of mine. The sockets weren't much better.

Oh, so you're just a boomer "Hurr Durr back in MAH day, things were built to LAST" fags that sold out to Chinese manufacturers because you wanted cheaper shit. They're perfectly serviceable tools for the price point, and not significantly worse than rape truck tools, without the rape truck prices. The law of diminishing returns hits fast and hard, motherfucker, so why don't you go back to jerking off into your fapoff tool chest you refinanced your home on.

Believe they shifted manufacture to China in the 90s, perhaps late 80s, don't really have to be a boomer to remember that. Think it was 90s, seem to recall it was after the first big batch of companies moving production to China and the outrage was gone, it was just more of the same.

Buy as you go. Go to a few diesel companies on your time off and ask to talk to the mechanics about their tool set.

As a tip, concrete plants are almost always looking for techs. They work long hours and pay decent. Good luck mate.
