To be honest, I couldn't pass up their Bauer Portaband when I had a coupon for it for $94.99 (Reg $149). I immediately ordered DeWalt blades for it but used it with the Vietnamese made blade before the DeWalts arrived and was surprised how well it worked. I can cut steel, 1 inch thick brass/copper and aluminum tube with it no problem.

Had it about a year and still on the Viet Cong blade.

Do not buy the table top drill press. There's so much slop in the chuck -even after modifications- that it's easier to do precision drilling with a hand drill.

This is true. I got those same orange straps for $6-$7. And that Low Profile is always $70-$80 with whatever coupon. Those are the regular prices. Tool cart is $109 as well.

>>1566920
Those 3-ton jacks are actually the thing that got me into HF the first time. The low profile always has coupons for <$80, and I think the regular 3-ton rapid pump goes on sale for ~$70. That’s one of the handful of things from there that you can’t get anywhere else for close to that money, it’s probably a loss leader to get you in the door so you can spend $90 on a Chinesium drill press worth $30 and think you got a good deal.

I have had one of those jacks for 2 years and still going strong, and I have seen the nog tire shops beating on them day after day. The Daytona jacks are great for <$200 as well.

Meh I have heard mixed things on the aluminum jacks and stands. I feel much safer under steel, especially if it’s just going to stay in the garage.

Also the 1.5T jacks are like a toy compared to the 3T. If you look at them in-store, there is a huge difference. The 3T is more like an actual shop jack, not some spare in the trunk. That 1.5T lifts to 14”, the 3T Rapid Pump goes closer to 20”, that’s a lot more working room.

This is the Daytona vs the 1.5 racing jack. The racing jack does have it's place, and I've had this one for years, and if that's all you can afford, it's okay. It's way better than the $19 trolley jack for sure. But if you can, nut up for the Daytona. They are a whole other beast entirely.

Pretty much everything at HF is their own store brand. There are only a couple random things that are sold elsewhere (Poulan Pro and a couple of the tiny home section items come to mind).

That Daytona jack is nice, but make sure you check the coupons whenever you buy something from that store. The low profile ones are more costly and you don’t really need them unless you drive a slammed Civic that bottoms out on speed bumps so keep that in mind. Also if you have never shopped at HF, remember that they only offer a 90-day warranty on anything with moving parts that doesn’t explicitly say “Lifetime Guarantee”. You can buy the extended warranty, but then you should factor that into the cost (Northern Tool has these nice Yellowjacket jacks that are just like the Daytonas for $199 right now and they might have a real warranty, making it ~$50 cheaper than the HF jack with a similar warranty). Make sure you follow instructions on jacks because I have seen ones you need to bleed before first use and you will wreck them prematurely if you don’t bleed it the first day you get it home.

>>1567217
Was it just a seal? That’s the other thing, for what you save at HF, you have to think about future service. I’m sure you can find seals, but HF won’t help you.

HF customer service works for me.
I found an abandoned 2 ton engine hoist (w/air powered jack)
It was left behind because the six casters were missing
I called customer service with the stock number for the hoist.
They said they only sold the casters as a kit with mounting hardware.
They sold me six casters with mounting hardware (nuts and bolts) for ~$30
Locally they would have been over $50 without the mounting hardware.

Shitboxes are loved by /o/. We like to say they have character. We beat them to hell, and they somehow still go another 50k miles. When brand new with 4 miles on the odometer, we smugly donned these vehicles "econoboxes". But they matured, such as a fine wine does. They surived to 300k miles with minimal repairs. Just like a soldier earns the Purple Heart, our "econoboxes" earned their reputation as the "shitbox". There are a few cars that will always be known as great little shitboxes: the Toyota Corolla, our beloved Twingo, and America's frontrunner, The Geo Metro.

The Geo Metro was conceived much the same way I was: during a 4am cocaine fueled grope session in the back seat of an AMC Gremlin.

The year was 1987. A few Detroit executives who were down on their luck decided that we need a car designed for real human beans. A car that would love its 8th owner more than its original buyer. A car that had seen 3 oil changes its first 100k miles, but now is pampered by synthetic blend every 2,999 miles. Sunroof? Fuck that! 4 cylinders? Nope! We want 4 wheels, 3 cylinders, 2 doors, and one goddamn good car.

Thus the 1989 Geo Metro was born. It reigned supreme for decades, much like a dictator in Asia. Jay Leno owns 7 Geo Metros in case you forgot. The Geo Metro is the only car to win at Monza, Laguna Seca, Silverstone, and Talladega. Ford and Chrysler appealed to the US government in 1990, saying that production of the Geo Metro created an unfair advantage for GM. Unfortunately for Ford and Chrysler, 98% of the members of Congress drove Geo Metros and loved them to death. The Geo Metro placed 4th in the 1992 Presidential election behind Ross Perot.

Some say the Chevrolet Aveo was the successor to the Geo Metro, but I refuse to believe. Nothing can ever succed over the Geo Metro when it comes to its main purpose: being a spectacular shitbox.

Look up Project Farm's tests of all leading batteries, thunderbolt is ass per unit money spent and how much energy you get.

Their zipties and electrical in the consumables were pretty good. I've had their 10-15$ angle grinders, they are workhorses, I've used them during my welding/fabrication/machining work, they are a great cheap way of getting multiple grinders so you don't have to keep swapping different wheels. Quickly go from a cup wheel to a grinder, then a cut-off, then a wheel or sanding flap disc. Totally changes the way I do work in the shop.

I got a set of those digital calipers, too. CRUSTY. Oof, big time. Plus, they aren't finished at all, so not only don't they slide very well, the sharp edges will cut your hands!

I took it apart and with a round file, and broke all of the edges. I then sprayed Comet dry-lube (graphite based) on it and let it it in the sun to "soak" into the pores of the metal. And yes, these things are so cheap, there are microscopic pores.

Put it back together, and Bam! It's a useable instrument now!

Is it a Starrett or Mitutoyo? Hell no. Not even close. But at 1/10th the price, it'll do fine.

The problem with this test is he used Alkaline batteries for every brand except Harbor Freight and Dollar General. The HF and DG batteries are Zinc Carbon. They don't last as long as Alakalines.

I've used the HF Alkalines (Orange batteries) and they're pretty decent, but they do have a tendency to leak if you leave them unused in a device for too long.

I wouldn't recommend the 3 gallons for anything more than light inflation or dusting. At least not the $40 ones. They're loud, and take a long time to get pressure.

They have new compressors that are very quiet and run for about $140 with coupons, those aren't too bad compared to the other brand, but haven't tested them outside of their store display yet.

>How good would they be for using an air powered die grinder for metal work?

You need a larger capacity compressor. I have played with cut off saw/ratchet/die grinder other high volume tools with my 8 gallon oiled HF compressor.
It works, but I only get maybe 20-30 seconds before it loses too much air and turns the compressor back on. Not really practical if you want to use it al lot. It will be useless with only 1 gallon.
You cant really just say "ill let the compressor just run", they arent rated for that type of duty and itll kill them in short order.

If I were you, id look into the oiled 21 gallon machine. Their oiled motors are reliable and why they have a good reputation for air compressors. Their oil free are junk and ride the coattails of the oiled ones.

I have no comment on the brand new quiet compressors, except for the fact that they are priced fucking stupid.
You can buy a REAL California Air (the popular silver, ultra quiet brand HF is knocking off) compressor for those prices. Right down the road from my HF is a Farm and Fleet.

A 1 gallon California Air compressor is $110, an 8 gallon ultra quiet California Air compressor is $199.
They also sell higher end California Air compressors with aluminum air tanks which is a huge upgrade.

Those 29pc drill bit sets in the OP go on sale for $10 a lot, and people love those for working with wood because they’re basically disposable after you dull a few common sizes and break some of the small ones. DeWalt/milwaukee drill bits are the best drill bits that you can get in box stores locally. Buy good drill bits and learn how to sharpen them. The cheap 3-ton stands they sell are fine, they’re like the same thing that most other places sell for twice as much. If you’re going to be wrenching and rattling the car while it’s on stands, you may want to think about some 6-ton stands because they have a much wider footprint.

There is one US company with blue and yellow stands that are supoosed to be the best, but you’re going to pay like $75 for a pair of 3-ton stands. I use my HF 3-tons for taking the wheels off, and then I use these double locking 6-ton Strongway stands I bought from Northern Tool (on sale for only $40 a pair) if I’m actually working under the car. They’re big and they have the regular locking lever like the Pitts, but they also have a pin that goes through for added security.

And good luck with that used oil. Even if you found somebody willing to pay for it, it would take decades of oil changes to make any money. Most auto parts stores will take your used oil for free. I use the cheap regular pans for oil changes and dump it into an empty jug as soon as I’m done.

Those Ryobi starter kids when they go on sale are such a steal. If I was buying my first house with no tools and didn’t want to overspend on something I might use once a month, I would consider those for sure.

Ok, so it's official, my FAVOURITE ITEM from HFT is the lowest priced 20 fl. oz. HVLP Gravity Feed Air Spray Gun item #62300. HOLY SHIT, I'll never buy a can of spray paint again, this thing is fantastic. Because you can vary the inlet pressure using your regulator, and due to the control knobs, and with thinning out the paint you have fine control over every aspect of how the paint goes onto your surface. >car has abs, brakes are firm fluid is clear.

There is still dirty fluid in the ABS pumps. That is what the other anon was getting at.

>>1575298
You need two people to do a normal bleed by just cracking the bleeders.
Using the bottle method, you can do it by yourself easily.

>pull all the dirty fluid in the master cyclinder
>fill it to the top with clean fluid
No air has entered the system

>put hose on bleeder
>fill water bottle with clean fluid
>poke hole in bottles cap, stick hose into clean fluid
>crack bleeder

System is open, no air has entered the system
You push the brakes, dirty fluid comes out of the bleeder, down the hose into the bottle, dirty fluid gets in the bottle, any air bubbles up and out of the water.

Now in a normal bleed job, if you let go of the brakes, it would draw air back into the system. Thats why you have a second person close the bleeder before you let go.

WIth the bottle, you let go of the brakes and it draws pure brake fluid back into the system. Never contaminates the fluid.

>keep master cylinder full of clean fluid
>empty bottle of bad fluid
>bleed till its clean, go furthest from master cylinder to closest

You can do a brake flush by yourself in an hour, replacing the vast majority of your brake fluid.
The vacuum system does the same thing, but it pulls the fluid instead of you pumping it with your brakes. Pumping is easier and faster.

I have been curious, I would like to see that thing tested because that’s by far the most powerful corded impact based on their “breakaway torque” numbers, but then the website says something like 450ft-lbs of actual torque. The other impacts with “breakaway” numbers near that are still rated at 700+.

The old fluid in the calipers and lines get pumped out.
The master cylinder pushes a lot of fluid. You have to keep it topped off with clean fluid.
In the beginning the bad fluid draws back and forth in the bottle and bleeder, but you'll be pushing clean brand new fluid out relatively quickly. You'll see the clean fluid moving back and forth in the hose, not actually touching bad fluid.
That's when you know it's time to close up the bleeder and move on.

If you let master cylinder get too low, you'll pump air right into the system

I've had the 120 volt impact for a few years now. I've been using it for removing seized case nuts on 80s vintage Japanese motorcycle engines. For that workload it's perfect.I've never used it for lug nuts, and my sense is that it might be a little light for that. But if you're working with bolts that have been fusing with an aluminum case through electrolysis, or things like clutch hubs and sprocket nuts and motorcycle fork leg bolts that are threaded to something that spins, it's ideal.
What I can say is that I previously bought the really cheap air impact, not the earthquake but the $30 one, and the 120v produces hella lot more torque than that.

HF is becoming a different store than it used to be. The past couple years they have been releasing more new stuff every month that is the similar in quality to the Home Depot stuff and the prices aren’t much better. They stll have their dirt cheap Chinesium Chicago Electric $19 angle grinders, but that stuff is becoming a smaller percentage of their total inventory.

After spending hours and hours in HF stores over the past couple years, I have come to the conclusion that there’s only a couple dozen things they sell that are worth buying from that place like the $70 jack and $150 tool cart and $15 breaker bar, and maybe a few specialty automtive tools that are crappy but the DIY guy will probably only use the tool for one job so buying a shop level tool isn’t worth the investment. The real cheap Chinesium hand tools aren’t worth wasting the money on if you expect any use out of them, the consumables are about the same, and both can often be found at Walmart for the same or less. The better tiers of hand tools are about the same cost as better known and trusted brands from Home Depot or Lowe’s, and the power tools and equipment are about the same except you don’t have to pay an extra $40 to get a warranty that will last past the second use.
