Are pirated batteries for powertools worth it?

They work alright, I personally have never had a problem.

I don't think their max current output is as high though, like my Milwaukee impact definitely runs slightly better with a Milwaukee battery.

AvE ripped apart a real DeWalt 3.0Ah and a knockoff and as much as he wanted to shit on it, you could tell he was sort of impressed.

Read the reviews and see what they say. His knockoff 3.0Ah packs came with Sony 2000mAh cells in it, so they were good cells and it was actually a 4.0 battery pack. He said it looked like the batteries had been used in something else prior, so my guess is they were taking battery packs that were trashed because of one or two bad cells, testing the ones that still had a good amount of life left, and using those in the knockoff. I believe it still had all of the balancing but was missing thermal protection or something so you want to make sure you don’t continue to run the tool if your battery pack is 200F.

And before you say “Oh the cells probably only have a few cycles left” I think he did a test on them too and they came really close to the full 4.0Ah.

I would only consider getting them for tools that have all the electronic protections inside the tool instead of the battery.

I've gone a step further op.
I run a bunch of Milwaukee v28 gear. Don't want to reinvest on a new set when this stuff is used daily and bulletproof. Batteries being older now I've had two die from bad cells.

If you open them, they are usually always 18650 cells. I bought a case of new /un needed laptop battery packs, and butchered the 18650 meat from within for a cheap supply. From there, I made a arduino powered battery spot welder (microwave transformer etc).

Costs me about $2 per battery I repack, and they have only needed doing once. I've also repaired various other brands with the same cells for friends.

That said, the Milwaukee batteries came with a 3 year warranty. I had mine replaced at the 3 year mark also - told them they didn't hold as much charge.

Tl:dr - I wouldn't bother, just repack your oldies unless burnt out.

I wouldn't put noname laptop cells in a power tool, 18650's have drastically different maximum output levels

I agree for the most part, but you have to take into account that he didn’t 100% shit on this battery pack when he really wanted to. He still said to pay SB&D in the end because muh boomer, but those batteries are def worth it for 30%-50% of retail.

18650 is a battery package, it's absolutely no indication of chemistry or electrical performance.

At least you got to see what was in there before wasting $40. But it’s China so who knows.

I prefer NiMH packs because I can rebuild them with high cycle life eneloop batteries.
