Say I want to get the lead out of car batteries. How would I go about disposing of the acid afterwards?

It's just for bullet casting. My buddy owns a used car dealership and has a bunch of batteries he's happy to part with. Saves him the trouble of disposing of them and he won't charge a dime for them.

Sell the batteries and don’t give yourself acid burns. You can make a few dollhairs. Dude I know used to go around to Walmarts and Sears at night where they would leave the old batteries in a little cage outside and load a pickup bed full of them from a couple stores. By dawn you can drive down to the West Side and wait for the recycling place to open and trade them for $1000 worth of heroin.

I think he’s out of prison now. You would be standing there smoking a cig with dude and a truck would drive by and he would point at it and say “Man the batteries in that thing are huge, they pay $30 for one of those!” Dude and his brother were junkies in their mid 30s and lived in their mom’s basement, I think my bro met them through community service and would buy pills from the junkies.

He would ask me all the time if I would drive him around to steal the batteries and say “don’t worry, it’s not even a real theft charge because they’re basically trash” even though they would bust into cages and sheds in back of the stores to get them. He found some 19 year old kid to drive him one night and while they’re in back of some Walmart, a cop pulls up on them to see what they’re doing behind the store at 1am. Junkie dude tells kid they gotta run and drive away, and they go on a 120 mile police chase which finally ended after they crossed state lines and troopers from the next state were waiting there with spike strips.

Lead from batteries should be considered "Soft clean". Lets make the math easy and say...30lbs of lead in the average battery, that's over $12 each. Not bad, if you've got a stock and are quick.

>Lead from batteries should be considered "Soft clean".
How is that soft clean lead? It's not even dirty lead.
The electrodes of an old battery are all formed into lead sulfate.
You'd have to return it to actual lead through electrolysis or something.

>30lbs of lead in the average battery
That's more than double what an average starter battery weighs fully.

From the same site.

As someone who casts lead bullets, here are a few bits of info you might find useful.
First, getting rid of the acid is really not your biggest problem. It is NOT the environmental hazard it's cracked up to be unless you drop it in a lake or stream. I literally have a limetone boulder in my yard, dump it in a big depression up top, it bubbles and eats in (not much) until it gets to a perfectly neutral state and then the only "foreign" component is sulfur, which is massively present in soil and groundwater where I live anyway unless your well is over 200 feet deep. I scrape the sulfur and use it for other projects. Bottom line, don't dump the shit on fish or let birds drink it. It isn't fucking plutonium.
The bigger issue is reclaiming the lead from the plastic battery housing. That's a bitch, involves an angle grinder or band saw (flush the battery really well to remove the acid.)
Once you do have exposed lead, getting it into a crucible, you're going to have clumps and hunks and little scraps, it doesn't come out as one big piece.
>>1560683 said you have to return it to "actual lead through electrolysis or something." Um, no. Crucible that stuff and any sulfation comes out in the slag which you're scraping anyway as part of the melt. It isn't much, by volume, even on a heavily sulfated battery. In fact, battery lead is usually TOO pure for decent bullets, you'll need to add tin/antimony. Look into dropping in some tin solder at least.
Getting to the battery's innards is enough of a bitch that I don't use it as my main lead source, though. You can get a 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights free or cheap from a mom and pop tire shop.
Consider what lead alloy you want for your purposes, though. Purer lead is pretty soft and usually undesirable. Alloyed lead is harder, wheel weights have decent proportions of tin and antimony and are about right; quenching them in water straight from the mold helps too.
Ventilation and respiratory protection are your friends.

Wow man. Directly to hell.

Lead isnt worth shit. But with so many states banning it i predict it to be outlawed nationally in my lifetime.

May be pretty valuable. May not be. Either way I've learned how to make rolled lead for rooftops. And they used to line basements in florida. 100 years leak free in basically a swamp.

I'm going to dig 2' wide trenches one day and line it with lead for a bitchin gun room.

Both the acid and lead are extremely potent especially while mixed. They could be under pressure as well. Puncturing a car battery is an extremely stupid thing to do. Instead buy a motorcycle battery these often come with the acid and battery separated to increase shelf life.

As teenagers in the middle of nowhere with nothing constructive to do, my friends and I would cook up high explosives like acetone peroxide and HMTD to blow up old sheds/ tree stumps/ play equipment, but always struggled to get enough battery acid. Car wreckers and whatnot would get suspicious when a bunch of 15-year-olds show up wanting 8 old batteries.

If kids still do stupidly dangerous shit, can't you just offload the leftover acid to some shifty-looking teens? Even without the chemistry, acid is cool. Kids love acid

Battery acid is SUUUPER useful for all kinds of great shit!!! And can be hard to get a hold of in concentration when needed .... save it!
My buddy has an electronics recycling place, and I’ll drain a few 5 gallon bucket’s worth of acid every few months, dry that shit out, sift/grind it into a fine powder and store it in bags. Much easier than storing the liquid. I use it for everything from dissolving corrosion, certain types of electroplating, even making my own pcb tinning solution.

If people grew their own opium poppies and only ruined their own lives then maybe that would work, but you'll always have assholes who see it as a way to get rich by selling morphine and heroin and the rest to other people of all ages. Everyone thinks they can manage their addiction until they are dead or ruined, or one of the very few who survives.
