Now that I think about it...
OP, I did see a japanese painter who would use clear coats of lacquer? Or resin, not sure, but on each layer he painted a design on top of the last design. Eventually, his project was to fill a bucket with "water" and the layers made fish that not only looked 3d but also had varying depths. I've been interested in this technique, perhaps it could be used in a less drastic way to make cool shit on music equipment?

I'll look for the video.

Dont try it till you research it thoroughly...The water has 1.5 tabelspoons of borax per gallon. And the water is kept at 75 degrees F.....the paint will float on its own but the borax makes it spread....Some colors do better than others. Example:metal flake colors are too heavy...The pigments in some colors are heavier than others, like the red in my vids was too heavy compared to the yellow and green.

There was a website called project guitar I used to look at alot years ago.
One guide on there was some guy's special way to swirl paint stuff.
He used a huge tub of water, with borax soap in it.. and floated paint on the water and dipped stuff in.
Did all the swirls in 1 go.

Always wanted to try it, but I haven't a junk guitar around to try it on.

>> No.154383

I really like the technique, but I think you would have better-looking results if you mixed colors beforehand, as opposed to just dumping the primary color from the jar. Also, a little color-theory would make for some less eye bleed results. I understand the look you're going for, but maybe if you whip up some more classy examples, you could make a business of selling them?

He could always just fill it with water?

I'm curious though, can you do swirls over an existing paint if you used one color and something that the paint wouldn't blend with like soap or something? The other thing I was wondering, is what keeps you from getting gaps in the coat when you're dipping? Do you just have to make sure there's no water showing through the paint layer?

yea i dont know why i didnt think of water,derp...

you always want to prime and base coat with a like color of the colors you are swirling with...you cant just use one color it will just spread evenly on the water and give a semi uniform coat of said single color...you need two or more colors...it shouldnt have gaps if you do it right, the borax makes the paint spread and come together with no gaps.

Those are the most lifeless wahs I've ever encountered. Not to mention tone sucking pieces of garbage. Because of your thread, I have added research of it to my compendium of knowledge. This is one of the things that will get added to a few of my /diy/ projects already in existence. However, I have very little income, so the cost in the right type of paints means it'll be a while to do it.

I've also shown my cousin who thinks its the most bad ass thing hes ever seen and wants to try it with one of his older electric guitars with one of his other cousins.

Your thread is already changing the world with growing ripples of creativity.

Here, prices are different for paint. I'd need to order it in bulk to get those prices, but shipping costs negate that. Even driving to get it will cost about $15 in fuel (65 miles round-trip) and then the paints are about $5 per 3 fluid ounces (at ACE Home Center, the closest store with paint supplies).

I'm only make about $2k-$5k per year. So, I really give a lot of thought about the practicality of my projects. Cost is a big factor. What I would do would be to make a lot of something and sell it, while keeping the best on for myself. Thus I make money from a project and fund it at the same time. This is why it takes time.

Your work is neat!

I watched the videos you posted to the thread... then went on with surfing...
Then it hit me.

Ammo cans.

They already have a rubber gasket seal. The paint may mess with the rubber, or it may not. Maybe the rubber could be "masked off" with silicone sealant or something. This would work if you only wanted to do the outside... but really you could just take the whole rubber gasket out and dip the lid and body of the can separately.

I think lots of people will find this completely bad-ass. So long as you use bad-ass color schemes.

I have used hammered texture spray paint on ammo cans before, as well and using normal spray paint with stencils. I also use spray on rubber to give a grippy surface on the bottom so they wont slide around in the back of my car.

As a maker of homemade insertables, I find that the MSDS of a material will tell you everything you need to know.

There are two part resins, that once cured, will be perfectly safe for insertion. I found a good casting resin at hobby lobby once that would work.

For a good smooth coat, I'd dip the toy in the mixed resin, rather then painting it on. You want a smooth finish here.

Think that's the one. Check the MSDS just to be sure. I remember it's a 1:1 ratio mix.

Make sure you get the ratio exactly right, and mixed thoroughly. If you mess up the ratio or the mixing, it won't cure hard, and instead be slightly sticky. This can be fixed by giving another dip that is properly mixed but this will waste more resin.

Also, you might want to do a test piece first. I don' know if the resin will react with the paint or not. It shouldn't, but test to be sure.

That's correct. It's the client who determines what looks good in the end. I've made some really great stuff only to have the client be like, "No, I don't like this and that, use these colors instead." Which ends up look horrid to just about everyone except the client.

sorry, didn't specify. I'm the guy who's been asking about xbox controllers, which is what im going to paint, not wood. If i just sand>prime (with basic indoor/outdoor white primer)>sand>swirl do you think it would work?
Also, I dont have much experience with enamel, will it need a clearcoat for something that will be around warm sweaty hands a lot?

op here...you shouldn't have to sand. i would disassemble and wash the parts you are swirling in hot soapy water to rid it of hand oils that will keep the paint from adhering properly.

prime grey
paint flat white with two light coats (best never to use gloss)

then swirl
let sit for 24 hours
clearcoat with whats in the picture

the biggest thing is to take your time...dont rush.

i've painted controllers before, i swear microsoft imbibes them with hate of all things interesting. You definitely want to sand them before priming as well as soaping off skin oils (a little paint thinner also helps a lot) and make sure to dry it with a clean microfiber cloth.
>>163484
i almost feel like swirling each part separately would make it look funny... I think im gonna experiment with some blue tack to keep everything but the joysticks on so it has a uniform swirl. Not quite sure how i could dip then disassemble to dry tho...

its not the best idea to use solvents on plastic. u never know what plastics react to a solvent

>> No.163724

>>163687
I've done it to an xbox controller before and nothing noticeably bad happened, thats why i was recommending it.
Question as far as the enamels go: once they dry enough to be safe to touch, how would 2 parts come apart (like the top and bottom half of the controller) if they were dipped together? Would it crack, flake, chip, or what? again, not too experienced with enamel.
Also, got everything else i need (i hope) so unless something unexpected comes up i should have it done by thursday

>> No.163729

swirled paint is so thin i dont see any problems that would arise. if you cant pull the parts apart lightly run a sharp razor along the joint

I've never swirled, but I am a professional house painter in the summers.

Generally, you never want to use cleaners before you paint something like a wall if you can help it because the chemicals in the cleaners can interact with the paints and give you strange results.

You might be ok here since I'm assuming this is oil base or something along those lines, but I'd use the least amount of cleaner you can get away with.

What i'm thinking right now is:
>remove electrical bits
>prep pieces separate
>put all the pieces back together
>seal with blue tack
>dip
>dry
>cut/break everything apart
>a little sanding on edges
>clearcoat separate
i'll see if it works tomorrow.

Few questions about swirling...

How thick does the enamel paint coat, and how does it do with fine detail? I play 40k, and I was thinking of using this technique on a tank, and then doing the detail work over it. If it's at all thick, it would gum the details and ruin the model.

Sorry to bump a dying thread but I just tried this and didn't get a very good result. I thought I could just skip the whole step of adding the correct amount of borax but it ended up just getting really thick too quickly. Just a reminder to always follow directions and don't skip out on anything.

yes, it works on just about anything if you prepare it correctly.

i carved the vibrator out of wood and used a 9v dc motor with an off balance weight.

Aquarium heater. The kind that is a glass tube. A pool thermometer and just pouring in hot/cold water until it is right will also work, unless you plan on doing it all day long.
