I'm trying to etch and polish these metal enclosures to get them as shiny as posible before applying clear coat.
The etchant seeped thru my masking and now I have small splodges here and there that look weird, can I just sand them away?
Also what procedure should I be following to sand these down? I currently give them 5 min 500 5 min 1000 with the machine in the photo and my results are quite sub-par.

You want them mirror shiny? That sander goes back and forth, will leave marks. If you want to do it with a machine you need a random orbit. Start over. 500 grit wet, by hand with a block or sponge, 800 grit wet, 1000 grit wet, 1500 grit wet. That will make then smooth and remove all the sanding marks. Now you need to polish them to get them shiny. Tough to do by hand.

Damn, that'll teach me to trust the man behind the counter. I was told this was exactly the tool I needed. It's actually a orbital sander so I think it doesn't go back and forth.
These are the kind of marks I'm looking to remove.
They're caused by the acid and black toner.
Do you think they'll sand away?

anon you can get those to a damn mirror finish with a piece of sandpaper on one of those $30 12"x6" granite surface plates, the adhesive back stuff.

don't get too fine a grit at first though, it will take for-fucking-ever to get down to a flat surface. I don't really know how to polish surfaces that aren't flat, probably one of those soft wheels + polishing compound on a rotary tool.

this guy is correct, you can get a mirror finish with a file and wet sand paper. You need to do a cross hatch pattern.

Hold the file horizontal in both hands, and rub it horizontal back and forth, make sure you clean the file every so often with wire brush. Once you got a good scour, shift your position 45 degrees up so it's going slightly across, and using the finer side of the file. then take the sand paper, wrap it around the file and go horizontal again, then get a finer piece of sand paper and do 45 degrees. You don't need a power tool to do this, it should take you about an hour by hand. once you got it pretty shiney, buff it.

Do it slowly and like in the video, if you go all fast and hard like a retard, it will bite into the metal and leave huge grooves.

I used lapping compound on that on a piece of aluminum foil taped to one of those cheap granite blocks, and you can buy 1-2-3 blocks in bulk on ebay that are a few tenths oversized for lapping to nominal dimensions.

I think that you just need a good and high-quality tool for this case. I remember how last year my brother had a need to рolish some metal things and he spent a long time looking for the right grinding machine that would help him. Fortunately, our father recommended him a great site where my brother found the right tool that was both in price and quality very decent, besides the design of this machine was very attractive, so he could not refuse such an acquisition and immediately bought, and then experienced and was delighted with the work of the new tool.
