1524932 No.1524932 [Reply] [Original]

I'm making promise rings out of old hex nuts for my boyfriend, to symbolize my love and loyalty even before marriage, which I am anticipating. Has /diy/ made rings and if so out of what material and for whom?

I spent hours using a spoon to beat an old silver dime into a ring for my gf. It was very nice up until I told her how I made it, and I could see her thinking "a fucking dime. he gave me a ring that cost one fucking dime".

Make sure to use a stainless steel nut, otherwise he will perpetually have a rust ring on his finger.

As for making it, a vise, a few files and some wet dry sand paper are all you need. Learning to file something round takes some practice, but nuts are cheap.

With the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965, the composition of the dime changed from 90% silver and 10% copper to a clad "sandwich" of pure copper inner layer between two outer layers of cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) alloy[22] giving a total composition of 91.67% Cu and 8.33% Ni.

I was grandpa posting. dimes used to be mostly silver, son.

I made mine and my wife's wedding bands out of silver coins. A 1943 Liberty Walking silver half dollar and a 1957 silver quarter. I hammered the edge, rotating as I went, until I had deformed the edges into my rings, then cut out the center. It gave plain silver bands outside, with the writing on the edges of the coins visible still inside.

5 yrs so far, we both still have them.

I have designed them, had them 3D printed and cast in silver and rhodium plated

Having a piece of 304 steel on your finger seems like a really bad idea because of the nickel. It isn't any kind of steel that can be work without getting allergies.

made this out of a nickel suing a hammer and a punch, definitely not the way to go if you're making a ring, the dark spots are from the last annealing as I have yet to decide if it's worth sanding off

Rust ring mark checking in. My wife likes the extra security of a permanent mark even if I were to lose my ring.

Made a shit ton of copper bands but the solder joints don't hold up like a weld does so I lost them.

So how exactly does she think it's any "cheaper than a "real" ring? If anything yours is more objectively AND subjectively valuable than any of those disco ball atrocities pushed by Goyzberg or DeQueers or wherever.

>>1525882
>perm mark

Is it weird that I would refuse to wear a ring on my finger (on a chain/necklace etc would be fine) but I would gladly cut/burn/tattoo/otherwise permanently mark or scar the place the band would normally sit without question? I don't want a ring to get stuck on my finger, fucked up by some stuff I do or handle without gloves, or interfere with hands-on work but I understand the point of not taking it off and it being visible.

Nickel and copper work harden like a bitch. If you're doing extensive cold work, periodic annealing is important.

>> No.1525980

>>1525742
Modern nickels are an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel, it's pretty easy to work with as long as you anneal it periodically.

There's a weird sense of community I feel on /diy/ sometimes when I recognize regulars by their stories. You told this one twice before, at least - the first time a few years ago near the time the board's creation.

I'm not complaining, mind you, just making an observation. I like that story because it reinforces my belief that most people don't care / can't grasp the amount of work put into handmade objects and thus it's almost always a waste of time making something for someone by hand.

Nononono, a promise ring would be worn alongside an engagement ring if hevwas to eventually propose, and both would be replaced by the wedding band after marriage. If after the wedding day OP was to lose her virginity she would be able to stop wearing her chastity ring. At any point in the process if would be acceptable to start wearing a tacky "halved heart" pendant, and any number of yin-yang "eternity" bracelets shared with platonic friends.

Look, anon, this stuff just MATTERS to white women.

My wife and I made each others wedding rings.

Spent the whole day in the workshop doing a white gold one each. Mine got heat treated to a gunmetal colour after rhodium plating and assay marking. It's really nice having something she made on my finger when shes not around.

10/10 would recommend.
