1520535 No.1520535 [Reply] [Original]

Wife is getting me pic for Christmas. I've never owned Ryobi tools before. I'm no professional, these are just for around the house. Thoughts on the brushless tools? Are they good enough so that I'm not buying more in a few years?

>Are they good enough so that I'm not buying more in a few years?
Had a van fire about three years ago.
Lost all my Makita and DeWalt tools.
Decided I'm not going to work too much longer (75 now)
Bought a Ryobi 'reconditioned' package almost like yours (multitool instead of scroll saw)
Still use them every day in rental property maintenance.
Nothing has broken yet.
Liked them so much I bought Ryobi chainsaw, pole saw, and hedge trimmer.
Everything works fine. They just don't have that 'tight' feel of Milwaukee.

Just to add to the other guys, Ryobi make decent tools. Great for "around the house" without the cost of buying into Dewalt, Milwaukee and beyond fanboyism.
They'll probably last you more than a few years. Every Ryobi product I've ever bought has been pretty solid (aside from one incident), and their batteries go on sale all the time.
However, the one time a Ryobi tool failed me, it was the fence on a miter saw. Thing snapped for no reason. One of the least stressed parts just up and goes. Customer service wanted me to drive 70 miles to a location to get it evaluated for repair.

I'm a Milwaukee fanboy, and that's about all the shit I can talk about Ryobi.

What's. As I said, I prefer Milwaukee and Ryobi's customer service is pretty shit. At the end of the day, though, does any brand particularly suck if you don't have a niche role for it? Ryobi is fine, and will do this guy a lot of work.
If he ever wants to upgrade to some dedicated /diy/ tools, I'll give him suggestions depending on the work needing to be done.

I used it Thursday of last week to cut off some toilet bowl bolts that wouldn't come off.

Their battery tech is less than desirable.
One of the batteries in the multiple tool set I bought was bad from the get-go.
It was a 're-conditioned' set but the seller gave me a refund of $40 to replace it.
I had one battery die since then for no reason.
Had another die because my grandson borrowed the chain saw and a battery. He forded a creek on his four-wheeler with the battery in the tool box.(the tool box wasn't waterproof)
>I don't blame Ryobi for that one
I've found the problem to be in the battery management board inside the battery.
The cells are still fine.
I've adapted a couple to recharge from a balance charger I already had.

I just got the brushless circular saw and angle grinder plus a 6Ah battery for each, total was like $240. Slightly perturbed that I'm seeing these kit deals now...

Both the saw and grinder have been pretty nice so far. Wish the body of the angle grinder near the disc itself was smaller (you can't quite cut though a 1" piece of stock because of it) and I'm not sure how I feel about the blade depth locking mechanism on the saw, though. The saw is _almost_ quiet enough for me to use without earplugs, as an interesting side note.

Already had the jigsaw. Wish it blew the dust away from the blade, but it performs fine otherwise.

How sharp the blade is has a great influence on how well it works and how long the battery lasts.

I've been using that exact set for about 3 years.

-Batteries are fine. Compatible with the old Blue Ryobi I still have, but lighter and last longer.
-Drill is shite. Specifically, the chuck is shite. Won't hold onto shit and keeps opening on it's own. Absolutely useless. Get an old grage sale or flea market drill and swap the chucks, then it'll be fine.
-Rest of the tools are fine. Not amazing, but fine. More power then the old ones, and lighter. Good for quick around the house jobs.
-Not durable enough for job site, but if you don't throw them into the back of your truck and let them do the dirt road dance, they'll be fine.

tl:dr- Ryobi is the best low-budget cordless tool set. Except for the drill chuck, which is unmitigated trash.

OP here. Interesting story, mother in law bought me the multitool from home depot. Said she ordered it online and picked it up in the store. I unwrapped and opened the box (it was glued shut) and pulled out the tool and.......it was fucking used. I shit you not, the damn tool had grime all over it, the words were worn off, and the rubber grip was coming apart. I asked her if she got a reconditioned one or something, and she said no, just ordered online at homedepot.com. I'm guessing some tard broke it, got a new one for replacement, shoved the broken one in the box and glued it shut and returned it with the receipt from the new one.

Will have to take it back after Christmas, but weird. I've never had somehting like this happen before. I haven't opened up the new set yet so I don't have access to batteries to try the multitool, but even if it did work, I aint keeping that shit. Anyone ever run into this situation before? I have been seeing a lot of Ridgids lately in the hands of a lot of techs and handymen. For some reason it seems like guys drilling and cutting wood all day run Makita or DeWalt, mechanics use Milwaukee if not bound to the Tool Truck Jew, and then the electricians and other techs who are drving a handful of screws into sheet metal or taking apart appliances have a Ridgid or DeWalt.

I have yet to witness anybody actually use a Harbor Freight Bauer or Hercules. Why did they think anybody would pay $100 for a HF compact brushed drill with one battery when you can get a DeWalt for the same price? If they do sell any, it isn’t many. The only Hercules tool I heard good things about was the saw that goes on sale for $300, but that’s not battery powered. There are very few complaints about it and everybody compares it to the $700+ DeWalt.

The battery powered tools are supposedly real fucking close to DeWalt, like the battery clip is exactly the same aside from one tiny slot. It could very well be contracted out to SB&D.

But it’s kinda like Kobalt 24V tools. They’re nice, but they aren’t cheap. Why wouldn’t you buy a known brand instead? Then you have to remember that DeWalt and Milwaukee are likely losing money when they sell you two tools, a charger, and a couple batteries for <$150. They are making their money when you need a new battery and you pay $99 for a 3.0Ah battery or nearly $150 for 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah. Meanwhile Lowe’s will sell you a Kobalt 2.0Ah for $20 or 4.0Ah for $50. And Hercules batteries are $30 for 2.5Ah or $50 for 5.0Ah.

I can't speak to the brushless but as a rule they are better than brushed because no brushes to wear and more power efficient, but I have found pic related to be pretty damn reliable despite all the flack they cop here. I am no professional but I'm several notches above weekend warrior, have a lot of friends over to wrench on shit, do a lot of metal and wood projects and the odd spot of set construction for stage and sound. The whole kit is about two years old, clutch is still free and smooth (I find these tend to go first in shitty gear, one day, out of the blue, you just can't crank the thing past about 18) batteries still hold a good charge, having said that they are usually not going any longer than two weeks without a full discharge/recharge cycle. If you use the batteries properly that's usually the largest vector to failure eliminated, letting them sit so long they develop memory and loose capacity.

I assume you already have them, enjoy!

>Fuck me that impact driver is loud
Jesus fuck you ain't kidding anon. Try using it in an engine bay where there is plenty of metal to resonate the noise around. It's barely tolerable driving coach bolts into wood, but god damn. And I'm not convinced it makes the full spec torque, but I'm too apathetic to test it. It does everything I need, and if it doesn't, I have a breaker bar.

even took it out of the box and tossed the battery on a charge and the other 3 are here.

i wired an arduino to it.

I do have them, and like them very much. Used the drill, driver, recip saw, and multitool so far. All were great. Only thing that yanks me is how they downgraded the driver by getting rid of the gear selector. Assume they did that for the kit.

I've got the 18ga and 23ga cordless nailers. I do about 800 feet of baseshoe every day and they still work. I bought them when they first came out and they've seen a lot of use. Also have some ryobi small blowers, vacuums, circular saw, etc. The ryobi 23ga nailer blows Makita and Hitachi cordless 23ga nailers out of the water. I'm surprised they actually greenlighted that shit

Just to add, 90% of the baseshoe is made of oak. The Makita left the nail protruding a quarter inch and the Hitachi instantly jams up unless firing into mdf shoe. Both are also an absolute bitch to clear jams

Just ordered the brad nailer at direct tool outlet. $59 for a certified used one. Not sure how that's gonna work out, but I'll give it a try. Never ordered from them before, so it's a bit of a risk.....

Refurbished for 50%-75% of MSRP sounds legit. There’s no good way to look up reviews of these sites, but you can google it and make sure it’s not a scam website created 30 days ago.

Sounds more legit than those Facebook ads selling 8pc Milwaukee M18 sets for $79.

Just make sure to keep those batteries charged, always. Those ryobis arent cheap and have a bad habit of dropping to sleep if they even sniff an undervoltage. You are going to have a really bad time trying to wake them up unless you bypass the pcm/pcb and boost the 8-10 (now potentially faulty) cells with a decent hobby or commercial charger. Electric garden shit is a meme.

Yes. They start to trickle charge and it will probably shut off eventually. They say Li-Ions are best stored at like 80% charge, but full charge won’t be that noticeable in the long run.

I think abon was saying don’t put them away totally flat because they will slowly self discharge over the course of the next few months and once they get too low, they suck and the only way to recover them somewhat is with special steps using a power supply.

Thx for the info. Maintaining batteries is always very challenging for me. I could go months without needing to use the tools, and am never sure what to do with batteries

I have some brushed ryobi tools and like them. Don't have any brushless, though. Is it worth getting them over brushed ones? Will they last longer, perform better or have more power that makes it worth switching over for new tool purchases?

>> No.1526664

>>1526218
I think Li-Ions aren’t as touchy as some people are afraid of. Put them away with close to a full charge and try not to leave then for 5 years and you should be ok.

>>1526604
For the average Ryobi owner who is a weekend warrior, I wouldn’t stress about it. You get slightly longer battery life, a little bit more power, and no brushes to wear out... but is 10% more battery or power worth spending 50% more when you’re using them around the house? And when was the last time you owned a power tool long enough to need to replace the brushes?

>> No.1526693

>>1526604
>Is it worth getting them over brushed ones?

As >>1526664 pointed out, their worth to you will vary heavily depending on how and how often you use them. I use them frequently enough that it's a no-brainer for me, but that's not the case for everyone.

That being said, off the top of my head I'd be really hesitant on picking up the brushed versions of two in particular:

The brushed circular saw uses a smaller, odd size of blade. It's not only harder to find, but it can't make a 45° cut in a two-by. Its performance isn't great to begin with, either, from what I hear. Probably stick with a corded one unless you can spring for the brushless.

The other one is the brushed angle grinder. 6500RPM on a 4.5" grinder is a joke. In order to justify one of those, you'd have to rarely need it, but also need it specifically in places where it'd be very hard to get power for a corded one. Yet, you'd NOT be doing this for any kind of profit/business, where you could easily afford the extra $50 for the brushless one, if not a nicer brand to begin with.
