Hey /diy/

It's been a while since I made a thread. Maybe a couple months. Who can really say, right? Anyway, if anyone remembers, I bought some cheap ass torn to shit land from some loggers back in the spring of this year. I've been doing what I can, but between my own demons, the girl I was in love with killing herself, and telling my only core group of friends to take a hike, well, let's just say I'm trying my best.

I've since carved out a driveway, all the way from the road to the other end of the property, which is a creek. I got a culvert put in by the road, even got the permit for it, and another halfway through the property to get over a second creek, which was so buried in logs, I didn't even realize was there. I got some help from a friend who has an excavator, that helped a lot. Hell, I've even got a hobo camp set up.

I'm just going to jump right into dumping pictures.

These are mostly in chronological order, taken as I've walked from one of the property, to the other, and back. It's still a right mess, but at least I can get a truck back there now, which has been clutch.

Are there like no zoning laws in Virginia or something? I'm European and it's confusing as hell to me. Why are you allowed to build on forest land? Why didn't the loggers replant the trees? If there are no regulations, what's stopping logging companies from chopping down all the forests in the state?

>> No.1512774

>>1512720
not op but will answer generally. private rural land may be logged and used for agriculture in many places.
lots of forest land that gets logged is owned by the government and the gov requires the lumber companies to replant.
zoning for rural acreages usually disallows subdivision and residential development (beyond 1 house)

When you buy rock for that road have a 10 wheeled dumptruck come in and use a spreader bar to just do the tire tracks. It'll save you some money. Im sure youve found out by now that nothing actually takes away the pain, no matter how productive or self destructive the activity happens to be. The pain is just lingering there.

Yes its a cliche, but its rooted deeply within reality that things will get better with time. Its the only true reprieve from grief that I have found.
The fact of the matter is that you are stronger than you think, and you will get through this. The choices you make right now will dictate how long the grieving process lasts. Being self destructive not only hurts yourself and your loved ones, but stunts the healing process.

>t. someone 4 years removed from being the sole person to walk in on and subsequently do 20 minutes of CPR on my little sister (who I had raised and was legal guardian over)

The sorts of guilt and shame and feelings of failure are overwhelming and I went down a very dark road which just made matters worse. Some stuff im still dealing with the consequences of, shameful and outright stupid things that hurt myself and others.
But I had tunnelvision and lacked perspective even if it was staring me right in the face. Weird how the mind works like that.

Im sure you have been hounded by tons of people telling you the exact same stuff. I got the same shit, everyone is just trying to help but they have no clue and dont understand which makes you feel so much more alienated from reality.

I also understand that I am being one of those people, and you arent on /diy/ to think about these things so I apologize for that.
Just can hear it in your words you are teeter tottering on a fence to self destructive behaviors which is all too easy to do.
Just rambling on to say I wish you the best

Good to hear from you HotWing, really good progress.
Get as much work as you can from that trackhoe while it is there.

Finding a second creek is a real bonus.

Get your road as good as you can afford now, patching it multiple times later is more expensive. Maybe using logs to corduroy the steep slope would work, ask the hoe man.
That soil will turn into ooblek with enough rain and might get things so stuck that you spend money getting your truck out repeatedly.

Some big tracks, Florida deer are tiny, with little goat sized feet.

Really like the cabin you got planned.

A platform for your tent is a good idea. Covering it so you have a 'double tent' setup would make it more comfortable, and dryer. Maybe a tiny bit warmer, too. You can use the outer area for storing things out of the weather.

I am very sorry for your loss and rough times. Spend some time with your friends, even if it is just an little while once a week. It will really help.
It is tough, but it will get better.

Thanks for showing us your property progress, it is a huge improvement already.

What you are doing and what you have accomplished already is very inspirational, Thanks for posting your work.

No shit. Dig your pond out, level a pad for a house and a garage and/shop in the future. Level a front and back yard and grade it sll for drainage. Maybe dig a trench for utilities. In the spring go dig up some 10 foot tall trees and replant around your yard at least.

Maybe level out a big spot for a garden

Honestly xouldnt have said it myself.

I tried every single meme teir depression advice.

The only shit that helped at all was being around good friends trying to have a good time.

We shot guns and drank. A LOT.

I can't say that the booze helped much but shooting a million rounds, launchibg beer cans, and ramping the limo was an experience ill never forget. All in the middle of the darkest and hardest few months I'll ever have.

It's simultaneously sad and comforting to know that I'll never be that upset again about anything tho. It was a cointoss on rather i went to see a shrink or gave my shotgun a blowjob. I drove back and forth down a 10 mile streatch of road for half a day going back and forth. I found the limit.

Good luck brother

Why are you not piling the debris up with the hoe and burning it? Do you plan to run a mulcher through there? Also why are you not cutting ditches for your road? Without proper drainage it will go to shit. The standard way to build a bush road is push off the top soil, cut ditches on either side pushing that material to the center, compact, then gravel so you end up with the road higher than the surrounding land with drainage ditches on either side.

Anon. You should throw a weekend long or like 5 day pow-wow on your land when it's supposed to be good weather. Biker rallies are a blast and most clubs have pledges they will volunteer to work the gates and help out for random shit. Most of them also have big burly teddy bears that will come uncorked if you do some real dumb shit like kick a bike over or slap a woman. They could be security. Charge a small fee for year 1. Like 5 or 10 bucks. Don't charge a vendor fee this year or maybe charge $20 for as big of space as they need. No power is fine as a lot of garage bands just enjoy playing and you can find a pipliner buddy or rent a generator for stage lights and sound. A flat deck semi trailer or maybe even a big flatbed gooseneck makes a great stage. Everyone can bring their own saws and help you clear it with free firewood. Mention in your fliers any donations of time or equipment work to improve the grounds will be greatly appreciated.

I know life sucks man. But where there's a will there's a way.

Hell, when you get a cuckshead done you can lay a big rock pad and charge uncovered monthly vehicle/rv/boat storage. Just undercut the shit out of everyone in your area and use the first profits to incorporate, buy insurance, and rent that section of land from your personal self.

Perhaps call some companies and let them train newbies to operate equipment by fixing up the land. They really can fuck it up any worse. No offence but it's all just pushing dirt around at this point.

Consider upgrading hookups and building a small RV lot.

I don't know. But this is a big task to go it alone. Even with a little help from buddies. Just find all of the ways you can to make use of the land and it will improve itself as you use it.

RC car / bike / quad tracks?

$5 per day entry and just weld a lockbox at the gate and hope most of the people use the honor system?

Find someone that FPV drone flys and take a cut from lessons?

All you need for an unsactioned mud run is a generic set of rules. A water truck. And a dozer to dig the pit and drag the cable. Charge a $25 entree fee and losely stick to generic sanctioned mud run rules. Make a smaller pit for quads and a flat spot near them for a return lane. Maybe let the kids drag power wheels before the races. Or have a power wheels demo derby.

Normal demo derby with cars?

Options are limitless bro. But if you take this opportunity to really fix it up and you find some great ideas that work well then rent the land or sell it for a profit and use it for the down payment on some more shitty logger land.

It could prove very profitable. I make a lot of money as a side hussle. I buy shithole houses and fix them up to somewhat livable and clean standards. Then rent them for way more than i could have got leaving it a shithole. Wait 366 days and throw it up for sale while still renting it out. If it sells i go grab a other shithole or 2.

Dig a Much larger channel for the water to flow and think of doubling your culvert size.

find a messy parcel and make a low offer.
