Can we have a nice knoif thread?

I got this busted ass celery harvesting knife that was being thrown away and put a pretty nice edge on it with just some 1000g on my belt sander.
Can I reasonably go further with the sharpness on it? I shaved a bunch of hair off my leg with it just fine, but I kind of want to make this thing retarded sharp. Like as sharp as you can possibly get whatever food grade stainless steel it is.

Ehh you don’t need all of that. Just get yourself a fire steel and whenever you go camping and need to start a fire, you will be sharpening you’re knoife at the same time.

Two birds, one stone.

Sharpness is a bit of a double edge. On one hand you want everything to be "SHARP!" but on the other hand you want everything to be durable too. If you make your blades too sharp, that is too thin with a grind that isn't suited for the blade or the tasks it performs, they will not be very durable and the blades won't last for very long (years instead of lifetimes.)

I suggest you look up the type of blade you need to use for the specific job(s) it is to perform. Then research what grind, bevel, etc the edge needs. Then you will know exactly how sharp it needs to be. If you want something that can shave hair, I suggest getting/making a straight razor.

Oh the only purpose for the knife is to be as sharp as possible. I'll probably end up using it to open packaging or something, but it's more of as a joke really, because a celery knife normally isn't even sharp enough to cut someone, and this one is already pretty stupid sharp. I was using it to cut dead skin buildup off my foot and it cuts just like a razor.

The blade angle I put on it is an eyeballed 20° right now. But I should go even shallower for a sharper edge? It seemed when I tried that before, it would build up a sort of bur on the whole edge of it, so I would flip it and lightly sand it level with the belt, but I feel like I'm fucking up the edge that way. Is there a way to avoid this? T

It's probably too soft to get a shallower bevel.

15 degrees is better for fine sharpness. Putting a wire edge on is fine, just strop it off and you will have an absolute razor.

I find a 1200 grit belt sand plus a strop with some green paste is enough to split hair, but still have some tooth for slashing, but if you want the absolute finest edge you will need wet stones to at least 2000 (japanese stones go to 15000, but that is serious overkill). But do invest in a good leather strop and some compound.
