I own a few of these. They do a good job of cooling a small room. Here's the thing though, most of the models in stores have a single heat ejection vent. Do NOT buy these - they suck cold air from the house and eject it out the window, and the negative pressure just means hot outside air is getting sucked right back in from doors/windows/crevices/etc.

Get a model that has both an intake and ejection vent on the window side. They're harder to find but Amazon has some that have decent reviews.

This one is going strong after 2 years. The build quality is cheap chinese crap, but that shouldn't be an issue if you don't knock it around too much. The intake/outtake hoses also need to be level or below the unit itself - it seemed to struggle with overheating until I raised it up on to a table

Portable AC units are great with the understanding that it belongs to you, you're taking it with you, and you're not hanging anything out of the window. Some communities (homeowners associations) bitch about window ACs.

They're less efficient than real window ACs. This is something that you sort of have to just take as a fact of life.

If you actually own a house, you'll want central air with ducting or a mini-split system.

Portable ACs can only do so much.

>I'm told that it wont work good
My use case might be different than most anons. I don't know what their expectations are, but the main reason I keep it running is so my server/desktop stays cool during the summer, so it only needs to cool a single room(my bedroom).

If I were trying to cool my entire apartment then I'd probably buy something in the $400~500 range, however my apartment already has built-in central AC and it does a good job too.

They can vary from midly loud (~55dB) to very loud (70dB?). Sharp makes/made some fairly quiet ones. Idylis (rebadged whynter?) was pretty loud. They can increase street noise since your window will be partly open and the plastic window piece isn't sound insulated. I recommend window AC. Friedrich kuhl is rated fairly quiet, but compressor kick-in is noisy. I think the 2018 LG Dual Inverters don't have compressor kick-in noise so those may be the most "stable" in terms of white noise.

Landlords will do as little as possible to give maximum profit. My landlord is the tightest mofo on earth. I still have shitty sash windows with peeling paint, cracks in the walls and cieling and it gets hotter than an oven in the summer and freezing in the winter (bong here). With Cali would go even more liberal and give business incentive to allow for remote work within the state so the population could spread out. There's no real reason to live in San Francisco or Silicon Valley other than the fact that you have to park your body in their offices for 8 hours a day.

MOSTLY false. Brugada syndrome is a heart condition that causes sudden random cardiac death, often strikes during sleep when heart rate is lowest, and is most common in Asian males. Lower body temperature, which can be caused by using a fan, causes lowering of heart rate as well, so it can potentially help trigger it.

People with this condition often experience non-fatal blackouts, which should be investigated. There isn't a cure, but a defibrillator can be implanted and will revive them whenever it happens.

No outdoor unit means the stuff in the outdoor unit is inside. This means way more noise, wasting more space indoors, and more heat produced in the space you're cooling so more power consumption.

I have one with an outdoor unit. The outside bit is a bit noisy and gets hot. The indoor part is near silent.

Attn Knuckleheads: THIS is what you Crave. "Ductless A/C." I have a two ton unit cooling my whole 1000 sq.ft.+ downstairs, and I installed it myself. Granted, it's $1k vs. $500, but it's permanent, works, AND IS INSANELY QUIET!!! Plus it does heat down to 20F. DID I MENTION THAT YOU CAN'T EVEN HEAR IT RUNNING??? I made the mistake of putting a hotel-standard, $800 "Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner" in my bedroom, and it sucks donkey balls because it's SO NOISY!!! Why can't they be quiet like the split mount? These things just work, and you can buy them pre-charged w/freon and just install them yourself.

FYI - single hose A/Cs blow the hot air out, which sucks the hot outside air back in thru holes in your house. They may claim 18,000 BTU, but half of that is wasted on bringing in outside air.

I've stayed places in Japan that have those and they're really nice.

One thing I've been curious about, though, they're pitching them in the US as a thing where you'd have one in every room, if you do that does that mean you have to have an equal number of outside condensers to go with them, or can you run multiple inside units on a single condenser?

Portables suck ass unless you get a dual-hose one. Single hose ones create a vacuum in the house which pulls in hot outdoor air. I ended up with a combination of window units and swamp coolers (window units in the bedrooms).

Thermal starts with a T, so BTU. It isn't BrThUn. That isn't how acronyms typically work. Many acronyms have multiple meanings in different contexts. For instance ITT can be a defunct technical school as well as In This Thread. And PC can mean both Personal Computer and Politically Correct. You can tell which by the context.

There is no instance where you can't tell whether BTU is British Thermal Units or Board of Trade Unions.

Portable or windows AC units can save you money in the long run. I would keep my Central AC at like 80-82F, while I set the window unit in the room I'm staying in to 74-76F. Focus on cooling where you at and not where you aren't. I noticed an immediate savings of roughly $80 a month here in Florida.

Most houses/apartments with central AC's only have the vents in key areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms, living room, etc.

I agree though that if you're single there's no reason to have central air on cooling the entire place when you're just going to be in one spot 90% of the time. Waste of cooling.

It's not 50 but still. Taking the first choice on zillow, the rent for a two bedroom is at 3k/month thus 36k/year. Substraction that to the 150k remaining after taxes and you get 114k.

On average consumer stuff +groceries + restaurants are 25% higher in LA. 114/1.25 is 91.2, the 90k figure by that other Anon is not that far fetched.
If you save smartly, you can put more towards your 401k, than someone in Houston, and you will be able to buy more chinkshit. But stop projecting your BBC cuck fetish on a Malaysian basket weaving forum just to feel better about the fact you live in a state that is soon to be third world.
