My oven element melted itself with lightning today.

It did not trip the breaker, I turned the oven off and then turned the breaker off myself. I've replaced the heating element, but now the oven display and control buttons aren't working. Is there a fuse somewhere in the oven I need to replace? I don't even know how to get in there.

Side note: the range top still works.
Side side note: I've already cleaned the inside of the oven.

You probably need to open it up and replace some fried wiring.

Yeah, I realized that this isn't technical work so I started farting around behind there and found a shit stain.

It doesn't pop off the board so I guess I have to replace the whole board? Hope it's cheap.

Yup. 7 bux. Check the rest of the board too.

$7 for a replacement board where if you don't mind? I'm searching for Frigidaire oven control boards and I'm seeing $90-300.

I'm trying to get the board out of the housing now to see if I can just replace this relay or whatever it is but it's really tricky to get out.

You don't need to replace it.

Just replace that relay. Looks like the contact arced out due to lightning.

That started as this. Problem was that the board is like 100+ and one fucking relay failed. So I removed them and put wires in the smd points and used externally mounted replacements.

I'd like to do that but I don't have any of those parts around and quite frankly I'm terrified of 120v so I don't want my shoddy work to burn my house down.

Also I got the boards out of the plastic housing and hoooly smokes.

I cleaned up the schmutz. It may be better than I thought, but probably not.

I ffound some things on each side of the bifurcated PCB which I don't really know about, hopefully somebody can tell me if I should be worried about these.

The left board has what I'm guessing is splattered solder on it, and the right board has some burned traces. Is this worth trying to fix or is this going to set fire to my house in 2 years?

its a Samsung appliance, its doing exactly what its supposed to do.

>> No.1429240

If you buy a part directly from Samsung then expect to get bent over on price. Theirs cost more because their name is printed on it.

Determine which board you need and search amazon by part number. You will save a lot of money

Get it off ebay and save even more.

OP that's quite the piece of work you've got there, I'd recommend investing in some lightning protection circuitry. I wonder if some beefy common-mode chokes will do the job?

That would be a lot of work to fix. Redoing traces and finding all blown parts, it just isn't worth it

>> No.1429422

>>1429210
If the lightning had enough energy to blow the heating element and parts of the PCB wiring, you can bet that pretty much everything on that board is fucked.

This would have been a great project for someone with electrical knowledge and a few 30A relays

>> No.1429462

>>1429210
It’ll cost you more time and aggravation than it’s worth, and it may or may not work. Besides, the replacement board may come with a fuse so this doesn’t happen again. Or you can put one in line with the element yourself if you want to be true /diy/

Naw dude 7 bux for the relay.

OP, before considering buying a relay, you should better try if the whole board is willing to work anymore.

Relay coil is a 12VDC one : try plugging a small car bulb in place of coil.
if it lights, well it means boards still have some brains to detect heater is too cold, and fire it with some juice... so a new relay may be worth testing.
if it doesn't, well you're done goofed.

That's a nice looking job there
