I know a decent amount about maintaining cars. Ive done it my whole life. My father taught me from a young age, parents have never once bought a new car in my life. I have never once seen my father take a car to a mechanic. Ive maintained my truck for the last 8 years on my own.

This is a double edged sword. I hate working on cars. I dont plan on buying a new car in the near future. I dont fawn over supercars or vintage money pit projects.
Im just a handy guy, and I dont identify at all with a large part of /o/.

I know there has to be other types of people like me who hang on /diy/ and wouldnt ever touch /o/.
Ive had 0 luck getting help on /o/ and a LOT of help here.
I go out of my way to help out car threads here too because I know the struggle of running beaters. I think the threads are good for this board.

sci told me to come here. Why are lead acid batteries so expensive? I looked online and for 5 gallons of battery grade sulfuric acid it's 30 dollars, lead is a dollar a pound and I imagine the plastic casing isn't much either, but as a battery the price is many times more than the materiel cost. I understand that you need to run factories and labor to get the finished product, but you'd think that wouldn't be too much with how well automation is. That and I'm sure they get a bulk discount since they're buying far more than 5 gallons at a time. Is there something I'm missing?

Yeah, a grasp on basic economics. They'll charge as much as people are willing to pay for their batteries, no matter how little it costs them to produce them. There's no reason for them to sell them for cheap if people are willing to pay expensive prices.

>They'll charge as much as people are willing to pay for their batteries, no matter how little it costs them to produce them

True, but in america there is more than one producer, so they compete on price. The prices jumped like crazy a year or so ago, and I can't remember the reason; maybe recycling fees or something, but it wasn't a big conspiracy like I'm sure 4chan would believe.

>> No.1413501

You are the one without a basic grasp of economics. If one company was charging a ton of markup, another would undercut them and kill on quantity

>> No.1413533

>>1413501
Thats not how the free market works
If one company drops their prices, then the other company would lower their prices. It won't stop until one company goes so low they're breaking even.

Different companies consistently sell things at a similar markup so they don't start a fucking price war. The companies that can afford to start price wars (walmart) always end up running other smaller companies out of business

>>1413533
They would drop until they can't quite drop any further. The price would hit the point where cost is only slightly under profit margin. And within that price there still has to be a portion of the general costs of running a business, not just the cost of that one item itself. So if one operation is significantly more efficient, they can afford to drop prices further. But the big chains are the big chains for a reason. They are the ones who survived, so they are all relatively similar in price due to being relatively similar in efficiency and nobody can afford to drop more. This is barring anti-competitive behavior, like selling below cost using their larger cash reserves to survive while they try and drive out competition.

Furthermore, since IRL is not perfectly efficient, there can be some differences in price that survive. Lets say store A has item x for $10, and store B has item x for $9. You think that no one would buy item x from store A, but maybe the customer for whatever reason doesn't know that store B has it for cheaper. Or he's in the vicinity of store A and the minor price difference isn't enough to make him go further to store B. Or he's getting a shitload of stuff at store A already and thus doesn't want to make an additional stop at store B because fuck that, his time is more valuable. Not even the stores are perfectly able to keep track of their rival's pricing, though they certainly try. Then there are exclusive deals with the supplier and such to consider, or special deals with suppliers.

Bruh, grow your own goddamn potatoes then, transport them home, mine your own iron, mix it with some carbon and make a knife, slice potatoes with said knife, grow your own basedbeans and corn and extract the oil, fry the potato slices, drive to the ocean and harvest some sea salt, drive back home, sprinkle the salt on the potatoes, BAM! Your potato chips are stale and shitty because you didn’t eat them within 5min of frying them and you didn’t vaccuum seal the things.

>They would drop until they can't quite drop any further.

The larger company can drop lower than the smaller ones and keep the price low for longer, even operating at a loss. Once the small guy folds prices go up again.

Remember Schrade knife co? Walmart used to stock their knives and was basically keeping them afloat when most other US makers like Buck and Gerber were producing in China.
Schrade refused to go to China so Walmart sent back a huge order and put them into bankruptcy.

Not necessarily. It's not thin enough to get in between corroded hinges and things like that.
I stopped buying light machine oils a long time ago and just use motor oil now. Even use it in the air compressor and haven't noticed a difference.

In the supermarket they sell an Italian brand of "WD40" called AV-82 or something like that. It's kerosene with propellant and no other additive. Its a great penetrant.
