Why?

Thanks. To be fair though, it wasn't just me. My whole family worked on it.

Not as hard as you'd think before you do it. The hardest part is the foundation. After that, it's mostly just basic carpentry.

It's not much harder. Like I said, Foundation is the hardest (and also the least rewarding - a shit ton of work results in just changing how the ground looks a bit). There's a variety of different ways to do foundations. I did a sort of a lazy way, because there was no way I'd be able to get a cement mixer to pour at this location (too far from a road). I just made a bunch of 4x6 stilt things sitting on concrete bases, and a frame sort of a thing out of more 4x6, and then laid joists across that. Roofing can be done by laying boards on their side - that's what my back roof is, 2"x8"x16' boards. The front one is some little triangle constructions made of 2x4. I've realized that I have fuck all pictures of the inside of this place, so I can't illustrate properly.

This picture is from when god lit California on fire because gay marriage got legalized, you can see the smoke in the air even at this distance.

yep

there's a ton of room behind the motherboard tray for routing cables, and I bought a drive cage which converts 3x 5.25" optical drive bays into 4x 3.5" HDD bays

I'll probably upgrade to a fulltower case soon though, as my CM690II is rather full at the moment

The loft. Since this picture was taken, I've added insulation and lauan to the walls, but the ceiling is the same. I also added a railing, at the request of my mother who doesn't like heights and doesn't have the best of balance. Oh, and blinds, and some furniture. But I didn't make those.

Clockwork and dial were storebought, all the fretwork was done by a scrollsaw. Took about three months to make.

Drew them up together with my dad. He's an architect, but there's nothing here that you couldn't design yourself without being one. Only exception is that the windows are placed in a particular way to maximize light and cause a breeze when open, but that's more of a trick that he happened to know than something you need an education for.

>> No.1339

OP, I know this probably isn't feasible, but is there some kind of fairly brief outline you could give me in the way of, materials needed, general outline for foundation, and possibly other tips for windows and stuff, my dad has done all the drainage before, and one of my bestmates have archictecture experience and I've put up a billion walls\doors\repairs etc, I am looking at your house thinking you're god of the builders right now.

>> No.1406

>>1264
It's magnificent. How much time did you spend on it over those months? Did you have a lot of mistakes? Your fretwork is perfect, near as I can tell, but I'd think it I tried to do something that delicate I'd end up with everything asymmetrical and messy, and probably have to scrap a lot due to too much fucking the pieces up.

>>1274
My family bought two and a bit acres for $3000 somewhere between a decade and half a decade ago. We built the place partly as a sort of vacation house, and partly because why the fuck not? I haven't been keeping much track, but it probably cost less than $10,000 all told, and this was over the course of a fair few years, because it's essentially been a free time project. Now that the economy's tanked, I'm considering going out there long-term to grow marijuana. That's what most people around there do for money, and they live okay.

Well, a very general overview is in >>809
Materials, in addition to what I mentioned there, you'll need a lot of stud boards (a particular length of 2x4, just under 8") and some 2"x4"x8' for the walls. Upon review I didn't specify the joist material, they're 2x8s, or thereabouts, and are whatever length the design calls for. The walls are a particular type of plywood that is made to look a bit less ghetto, I forget what it's called. The roof is plywood, then a tarpaper liner, then corrugated metal sheets. I use a lot of furring strips for various things, but they're never anything functional.

Foundation is super fucking variable. It depends on the sort of thing you're making and the land. I said what I did. It's actually not the wisest option for this location, since it's on a slope, but I've had no problem with it.

Windows aren't hard. Plann for them when you make the wall, just cut a hole bordered by 2x4s the right size. Then stick on this anti-leak shit and nail the window in. Put a wood frame around it to make it prettier.

>I am looking at your house thinking you're god of the builders right now.
I'm not. Between you and your buddies, you could do the same just fine.

Anything you want further elaboration on?

It's spraypainted polyester satin (wedding dress material, basically) over a metal frame of 1/4" steel rod, bent into a brain shape. There are "spines" that define the curve (and which serve as supports for all the 1/4" sections) made out of 3/8" rod, instead.

It's currently in storage, so you have to take the picture that has me in it.
