Their hand tool selection in general isn’t the greatest. Sears sometimes is better for certain stuff but they’re going downhill fast.

Home Depot seems better than Lowe’s around here. But I noticed some Home Depots have a better tool selection. The one 5min from my house is only like half the size of the one 15min away. And HD actually had some better brands than Lowe’s with Kobalt China everything.

Walmart sells fucking everything through their website and some of their stores have a good selection of Stanley tools for cheap. Otherwise find you a 20% off Harbor Freight coupon,

I hope they are looking at this thread. There is revival of hand working wood to create furniture. Not because of cheap customers, but because of folks tired of buying cheap shit from furniture stores.

>be me
>taking a shit
>reading a magazine.
>thinking I need to have a place to store my magazines while off the can.
>go to local stores: everything is shit, mdf, etc.
>go to lumber yard,
>5 hours later, 2 dowels and some pine boards.
>self created bathroom magazine stand holds enough magazines to survive a month of food poisoning.

Mr Home Depot ,and Lowes BossMan, there is a demand for hand tools, and your "tool section" sucks. Amazon and, Ebay's 120 year old tool salesmen are kicking your ass in this area.

Menards is midwest though, right? Don’t have any of those here and I kinda miss them. 84 Lumber is all over I think but they aren’t a normie home improvement place like Lowe’s.

Ace is great when you need that one specific bolt to finish a project on Sunday afternoon because they’re always in smaller neighborhood shopping centers.

Orchard is from the Northwest I guess and they’re expanding. It’s like the Trader Joe’s of home improvement stores. They are smaller stores and have goofy different shit but still have 95% of what you need. Like when Irma was coming, I needed some big masonry screws and there was a line into the parking lot for Home Depot, but walked right into the new Orchard and got em.

Yeah, Menards is branching out through the Midwest. Originally started as a pole-building erector company in Wisconsin I believe. then they started truss plants, door manufacturing, then the hardware stores, something like that. it does have an authentic history. They are the ass-kicking Truss builders of Wisconsin.

I always did like Ace stores.

Home Depot and Lowes I thought were neat at first, but now they basically feel like a Walmart of hardware/general supply stores.

It’s not even the “Made In China” thing with Sears. They’re closing a lot of stores and the selections at the couple Sears around me have been lacking the past couple years. Like they will discontinue something and just leave an empty hole on the shelf when it’s gone. I have been waiting for them to reset it with new products but it hasn’t happened.

A good portion of my Craftsman is US made and the China stuff doesn’t seem like it’s that much worse. It’s a bummer though. Still worth grabbing lots of their kits if you catch the big sales. But when it was US made, I would gladly pay more for it, but now I’ll go to HF for certain stuff when the new Craftman costs 4x as much and is made in China anyway,

>>1391859

I think the point was, China made Craftsman tools seem as good or almost as good as USA made Craftsman.
And since Sears is currently going out of business, it cant hurt to grab any Craftsman tool sets you might see on sale.

I have heard from others about Craftsman Chins tools, they might not look quits as "nice" as USA made Craftsman, but there is no difference in the actual tool performance and durability

The bulk of his comments are him posting pics buying large quantities of low end chinese garbage tools.
Its like he is dumping all of his retail checks into tools to "try and get into diy" or some shit.

The circa 2003-2007 Craftsman tools may be USA made, but they are still dog shit quality. And I saw the crossover to chinese tools, complete and utter garbage.

If you want to refinance your house to have that flashy new Snap-On box, go for it. They’re nice and there are better tools out there. Dude with a box full of Craftsman wrenches will still get the job done and most of their stuff is more than enough for the fags on /diy/.

Ok, try to understand this. The grownups who hate trips (I doubt if many do), have filtered Bepis long ago, and therefore they don't know that he's still posting.

BUT WHEN YOU CHILDREN, WHO CANNOT BE FILTERED, CONSTANTLY WHINE ABOUT HIM, THEN IT KINDA DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF FILTERING HIM, BECAUSE THE GROWNUPS STILL SEE YOUR SHIT WHICH CANNOT BE FILTERED.

The irony is that you children should use trips so we can filter your whiney complaints about a poster that would disappear if you simply filtered him.

Are you actually so stupid that you don't get this? YOU are the problem, not the tripcodes.

OP here. I was looking for a hand saw that can be resharpened or even altered. All I saw was two saws. cross cut, and hardened cutting edge.
This is called a "disposable saw" apparently. Use it until it stops working, then drive back to lowes to pick up a new one.

You are correct about the wall space and hand planes... but lowes and home depot also sell wood including space taking premium oak, and walnut, so catering to a niche market might make them more money.

I know its all about contractors but don't contractors want something they can resharpen?

>I know its all about contractors but don't contractors want something they can resharpen?

Nope. Time is money, and saws are cheap. Learning to sharpen a saw properly takes a while, and even if you did end up being able to sharpen it fast enough that a new saw would cost more than sharpening the old one, after all that time spent learning, it would take ages to save any money. Plus you'd need to sharpen more often, since it's made of a softer metal to begin with.

You take the time to sharpen saws because you enjoy the ritual of the hobby, and sharpening is part of that. You also sharpen to make sure you get a top quality edge, when that tiny tiny increase in cut quality matters. For fine woodworking and joinery, it matters. For general contractors, where the work will mostly be covered in spackle, paint, caulk, and the next assholes work, you don't need to bother.

If you're carrying an impact driver, buy disposable saws. If you're doing fine woodworking, sharpen your saws.

>TIme is money Then resharpen is the way to go here.
The drive to Lowes Depot, gas, time in traffic. walking to the high security tool section with the beeping cameras, then walking the saw to the checkout, waiting in line, walking back to car, then the drive, then the inevitable stop for gas, or the traffic accident up ahead. Thats about 1.5 hours or so, and 2 hours before you can start sawing again. (unless you have two or more saws).
You can sharpen a saw with a 5 dollar file about 10 times before you need to replace the file. Then have a coffee, and piss break, then back to work for a total of mabye 30 minutes of down time.

I'll be honest, I've never worked as a contractor in my life, so I don't know the rigors of contractor work. (retired bitcoin). But I know when I resharpen my saws, I seldom stop for two hours.

Its takes about 15 minutes to sharpen a saw either rip or crosscut. Including setup time.

I don't have a job. I"m retired. I live in the southwest. Two kids, that I"m teaching how to work with wood using hand tools only.

Today, I went to Home Depot and Lowes, looking for some pine. They have finished pine of course, but out side of that they have miles of douglas fir. Miles and miles of it. Then they both have a new species of wood:

"White wood" that looks like pine. Why not call it pine?

I don't buy joinery grade lumber because, invariably, there is some defect. I would rather, hand plane up a board square myself. Good exercise, great sounds, and smells.

I started wood working many years ago, but I recently returned and converted to hand tools only, during the NFL kneeling season. So now, instead of drinking a six pack of Bud, watching National Felon League while eating some Doritos Brand Tortilla Chips, I head to the garage and build stuff from wood.

Much more productive use of my garage, and time, and I've lost weight too!

Happy Memorial Day. Thanks to all the Vets that served their Country!

id say their companies are more aimed at homeowners, "DIYers" and the occasional "Do-It-For-Me" who was to remodel a couple bathrooms or new floors. id say the contractor and slumlord support is merely coincidental, those people are buying the same products in larger volumes at a lower price without having to deal with large scale wholesalers.

the products you see that attract "hobbyists" are definitely oddballs, you have to remember that most tools sold there arnt for heavy use or precision applications; they are there to get the job done and far more people will spent $9.99 on a HDX handsaw to cut branches than $59.99 on a Hattori Hanzō Ryoba Saw or $1000 on a Festool track saw. back when i worked Hardware at Home Depot i had people coming in all the time looking for the oddest tools for very specific woodworking applications that we would have only sold 2-3 of per year; i had to have a list of other specialty woodworking stores nearby to send them off.

They’ll shut down a store if they hear about union talk. Yeah extra pay on weekends but you have to work every other weekend. Hope you enjoy 30 minute lunches, you get in trouble if you take a longer one too. You will get talked to if you don’t meet personal sales goals. Your employee discount is taken out of your check. The sales departments are pretty much helpless without the yard guys. Everything runs on points system of 10 points. You can get a 25 cent raise every six months if you pass a test. They are overbearing about doing the in home training for other departments. They hire a lot of mouth breathers.(most of the customers aren’t far off either)If you work 2k hours in a year you can get a bonus if your store is profitable enough. Every year the percentage of that increases by like 1.5 percent maxing out at 15% i believe it’s based on what you made in that year. It’s not a bad job if you need it just to get through school or whatever. I’d stay away from management if you don’t want to hate your life every single day. Yard is probably the most rewarding (pays the most) but you’ll be sweating and freezing your ass off. And every spring the amount of blocks, river rock, dirt and mulch you’ll load is mind blowing.

When you don’t have room for shit the only option is up.

Employee Discount as is in if you spent $50 on Funyuns in a week with 10% discount your next check will be missing $45 and you can only spend what you’ve earned. So if your average checks are $300 you can’t spend more than that. But if you spend that much your check will be cents.

>$11 at Walmart

you already make more than most of the part timers without putting in several years.yard guys start around 10ish part time. And that’s including the 1.25 forklift pay.

their hand tools are fine but dont expect to find a noticeable difference between them and the other store brand lines like Husky or Irwin. they are all made in the same factories by Stanley Black and Decker then resold with different stickers on them. the main thing you should take into account is what the warranty on the tools is and how easily you can get them serviced/replaced when needed.

84 lumber is a lumber yard chain with stores staffed by salesman who provide materials to their big-time home-builder clients. It has a hardware store attached with an admittedly crappy selection of tools but a very knowledgeable staff who will make a sincere effort to help you. They can order things for you that you'll have trouble tracking down anywhere else.

If you need lumber products regularly, they'll give you better pricing than Lowe's so long as you:

1)Tell them Lowe's' prices are higher than the first prices they give you
2)Make an effort to come by regularly and act nice and friendly

You don’t have a ton of choice on hand tools if Lowe’s is your only option. Their Kobalt brand is fine, but I suggest waiting and watching the prices for the big sales if you’re trying to start from scratch. Pic related has a ton for $200 and I bet you could find it for $100-$150 on sale. There are a couple smaller sets for $100-$150 and those will go on sale for a bit less too from time to time.

Power tools, depends how expensive you want to go. Ryobi, Porter Cable are more affordable assuming they sell everything you want. Milwaukee and Dewalt are the next step up and have huge lines of anything you could want. That’s another situation where you should be patient and watch for sales. You can get $700 worth of tools and batteries for $300.

>>1398366
I just feel like we’re lacking a real mechanic’s tool store. I was just at Lowe’s grabbing some things and the tool selection is so limited. Want wrenches, sockets, or screwdrivers? Kobalt or Stanley. Home Depot is slightly better.

I dream of a brick and mortar store that sells all of the major brands you find on Amazon, and for every tool you have a selection of brands ranging from Chinesium like Pittsburgh up to some GearWrench and Craftsman and then top shelf is Proto and those Yuro companies you guys fap to. Want something real basic where even Chinese QC is reliable enough? Get the generic rebranded Pitt or Clutch. Want your go-to screwdrivers for the rest of your life? Armstrong and Wera are a couple shelves above.

John Menard is a classic GOP posterboy - started with a small business that bloomed into a giant retail empire
Anyone who's worked for the company will have heard stories of the man's insanity - one that comes to mind is how he supposedly drove his pickup through the front door of a store because the opening manager was late. Stuff like that builds his cult-like tough guy aura

Menards should have been sued into bankruptcy after that, there is no excuse for that kind of safety hazard in a retail store open to the public.

at Home Depot they are fanatic about safety, thats why there is netting on all upper shelves and extensive rules regarding the safe storage of every product you can think of beyond 8ft or so. opening associates had to do sweeps of their department and check off any hazards or safety issues and report them to managers on our phones and they were expected to be resolved within the hour. the few accidents we did have were outside of customer areas and didnt result in any injuries, just lots of damaged merchandise to be RTV'd.

Please explain.

I have shit furniture that my parents bought when I was a kid (I still live with them because it doesn't make sense to move out yet; I'm studying). Plastic handles are shit and the furniture isn't really well thought-out but I don't mind the material itself. I'm actually not sure what it's made of, possibly MDF or something worse, but it doesn't break apart. I definitely want to get a bigger desk and it seems the only sane option is making it myself. I was thinking that I'd make it out of MDF but then I visited this board and apparently MDF is shit.

So what advantages does solid wood have over MDF? Doesn't wood require more care? Is MDF just shit but I haven't lived long enough to see it break (furniture I have is like 6 years old)? Isn't handling real wood harder?

I was a delivery coordinator, I would not want to be a full time load puller. Shit was hell, and we were fucked without good load pullers. Also they had a 18yo kid die this spring due to his forklift flipping while moving some wet lumber. He wasnt wearing his seatbelt and tried to bail out. It didnt go well. Safety at menards is a fucking joke.

Back in the day, when menards was still making its treated lumber with mercury, one of the lumber plants burned down. This meant that all those ashes were considered hazmat. John wasnt about to spend that kind of money, so he told them to load it into dump trucks and dump it on his property. He got caught and fined pretty harshly.

i worked as an Order Fulfillment Associate at a smaller Home Depot for a while, i guess that would be our closest equivalent to your delivery coordinator. we had to pull and package all of our own orders to get them out on the delivery trucks on time, in the summer we'd have about 10 deliveries a day scheduled with nothing going out on Sundays. we were also responsible for pulling all of the online orders for customer pickup, setting aside merchandise on Will Call and receiving and storing all of the special order merchandise like custom doors or cabinets.

it was a physically demanding job that kept me running all day and pulled plenty of 10-11hr shifts just to get everything done. the only good thing i got out of it was it kept me in good shape and i built up a lot of good relationships with every department of the store since we had to coordinate with pretty much everyone except the paint desk to get our orders ready. since we roamed every corner of the building we had a lot of whole store knowledge of where products are and what the process is to get everything done, from cutting keys to riding mower maintenance.

we were also the only ones besides managers authorized to use the rental trucks for store use so we were always the ones making road trips to pick up damaged goods or drop off orders that went bad somehow.

my biggest problem was that the pay was shit for the amount of skills and company-wide knowledge needed to do the job and there was almost no recognition from management when we went above and beyond to resolve crises and fix problems. due to our garbage pay scale i knew cashiers that were hired after me and had done nothing but run a register that were making more money per hour than me. i was so furious when i sat through my last success sharing meeting where managers were handing out awards and recognition left and right to our mentally handicapped lot attendant and the cashiers that always volunteered to go get carts from the lot but completely ignored my team that had moved millions of dollars worth of merchandise that summer and put in plenty of 50 hour weeks just to get orders out the door on time. luckily i already had another job lined up making 50% more so i just took my bonus check and walked away. after i left they had to hire 2 new people to replace me and every time i go back they have customer orders laying around everywhere because they cant stay organized to save their lives.

The only forklift accident i ever had was a machine tilting forward after turning too quickly while carrying 2 bunks of 16ft Trex decking and a bunk of pressure treated 2x4s at once. luckily it was barely a foot off in the air so i dropped the whole load at once and slammed the rear end back on the ground. some of the banding broke on the decking but there was no damage to the machine and no witnesses since i was out back behind the store.

that and the time i was spotting for a reach truck driver who backed into a customer's little Ford Ranger in the pro loading area. we had to fill out incident reports but avoided any insurance issues because the customer had already left by the time we parked the vehicle and gone back outside to inspect the damage.

That sounds almost exactly the same job. When our department was formed, they didn't realize how many people we needed. We operated with 4 people for 3 months. I went 43 days without a day off. Now they have 14 people in that department. I guess management only notices when we fuck up.

We had 3 weights of forklifts. Big E, was a heavy son of a bitch, but didn't tip unless you were a fucking retard who wanted to move 3 bunks of 14ft 3/4in drywall at once. Then there were the 2 little electrics, which could handle a hell of a lot, but I have seen them nearly tip a few times loading shit onto the trucks for delivery. And then there were the the 5 propane's, which on a bad day might tip if you tried moving 2 bunks of 16ft treated deckboards at once. But did that stop people from trying, of course not.

Nothing wrong with new plane by LN is pricey (>300$). You can find a used stanley for far much cheaper. Youre going to need some supplies:
Some flat glass or natural tile that is flat on all of the top.
sand paper to remove rust.
Sharpening plates to sharpen the blade, and correct any problems.

altogether you're looking at mabye 150 including the sharpening plates (which you would need in any event).

I did get a LN router plane, and I love it. THe price the new router plane was the same price as an old, rusted thing on Ebay. But for #4 planes, ebay is the way.

Kek, that $8 sucks for one socket but the shipping is factored into it. You can always find them online but it depends when you need it and if you’re willing to pay $5 shipping on a $3 socket.

Home Depot and Northern Tools have a good selection of singles for $2-$4 each. Sears does too but they’re like $4-$6 depending on size and get worse as time goes by. But they are always out of lots of sizes and it’s a pain in the ass to run around to different stores trying to find one in stock. Last time I needed a couple missing 3/8” drive deep sockets, I just bought the damn set from NT on sale for <$10. Since this is really the only woodworking thread I see and I bought the lumber at Home Depot I will post here...
I recently made a rack for 3 20 gallon tanks for my fish room out of 2x4s. I bought the lumber at Home Depot, which is just KD whitewood studs. Made all the measurements and cuts at home with my Granspa's old circular saw. I pretty much fucked up because a lot of my cuts were off by a tiny amount, maybe 1/16th or 1/8th at the most, and a lot of my cuts weren't straight. Anyways, I put the rack together and it wobbled, so I put some leveling feet on it. Went to test it out after I leveled it with an empty 20 gallon tank and the tank wobbled. I tried it on the other two shelves and they wobble too. They all wobble from the same position, the back left and front right corners. I went to Home Depot and got a piece of plywood cut to fit my rack and they fit fine, but when I put the plywood on there, the tank still wobbled. WTF? What can I do to fix this?

Get a thick sheet of styrofoam, at least 1/2" thick, free from the recycle bin or pic related less than $8 at Home Depot. Cut it to the size of the tank, put it under the tank. profit.
The styrofoam will compress under the weight, absorbing that gap and leveling the tank. If you fill that tank with water it will flex and crack.

Alternately you can shim it, but if could be a hassle, and you'd still have to get it level. I did the styrofoam trick years back with a 100 gallon tank on a homemade 2x4 stand, worked flawlessly.

>> No.1408384

>>1408380
I read that styrofoam shouldn't be used on tanks with rims because it will cause pressure on the glass on the bottom since the rim is what holds the weight. Maybe if I cut it the size of just the rim and did that. I don't really want to shim it because it sounds like a pain in the ass, especially because I don't really have an ideal way to make them. I was thinking I could use a plane or a chisel and bring down the high spots in the wood but I don't really have a way to make sure all 4 pieces are the same height. I do have a carpenter's square and a miter square that I bought for this project but a lot of help they were.
