I've thought about something similar myself, the range benefit from the ICE would truly be something and if your electric conversion kit happens to include it, regenerative braking while providing power with the ICE would be quite interesting way to charge the battery if necessary. But honestly i'm not quite sure if the electric part is truly necessary while it does give you quite a bit of flexibility, i doubt you'd be willing to use that ICE when in a city, but between cities it would be just fine.

I built one.

Works best on a bike using 26 inch wheels with 36 spokes. Ebay sells the 2 stroke kits and the rear sprocket is designed for 36 spokes, and most of the e-bike hub motors are 26 inch wheels.

When you get the e-bike motor, get one with a thumb throttle so you can fit both the e-bike and the 2-stroke motor throttle on the right side.

One of your brake levers will be used for the clutch, so you will effectively only have one brake lever. Consider getting a 'surestop' brake system so you can use one brake lever for both rear and front brakes.

That said, it's a fun build and easily does 40 mph. Wear a helmet.

adding to this:

the 2 stroke motors are largely the same, just get the cheapest one.

The ebike motor comes in a few variants, but if you're getting anything stronger than 250w, you NEED to install torque arms on your bike or get a bike with a solid steel frame. The ebike motor produces enough torque to spin out of the drop-outs on your bike (see the front fork on my bike).

Don't cheap out on the battery, consider getting a LiFePo4 battery. It's safer than cheap-o lithium batteries that might blow up if you drop it.

holy shit I'm hard right now, thats incredible. can you give any links or brands or anything? did you just slap together an e bike and 2 stroke conversion kit? I have so many questions.

nah, I had an old bike I got a while back from costco and had the same crazy idea as op had and just winged it.

You can literally find everything you need on ebay, just search for stuff like

80cc bicycle engine
1000w front ebike
48v 20ah LiFePo4

Total spent about 700 bucks on parts.

Plenty of youtube videos to assist on the gas motor assembly, bikeberry has a few helpful ones. The ebike motor is plug and play.

oh, ensure that the "diamond" where the gas motor fits has sufficient space.

May also want to consider tubeless tires. These aren't exactly great for reliable trips, flats will really fuck up your day.

>> No.1385250

Oh and if you work on the 80cc bike motors, just be aware the clutch is lined with asbestos. Just a heads up.

I've seen 4-stroke variants being sold as well, i would much rather go for those.

The only 4 stroke build I approve of is if you use the 212 predator harbor freight engine / death row kit. The other ebay standard cheapo 4 stroke produces less HP than the 2 strokes due to smaller displacement, and weigh more so worse fuel econcomy (desu is not even a problem, you're already going to get 100+ miles to the gallon because it's a bicycle with a motor)

Man that's way too overkill. Pick related weighs 5kg and puts out 2 hp which is way more than enough, i really doubt that you can save all that much weight going 2-stroke.

Is there a reason to do this, other than "I want to?" It just seems inconvenient to deal with 2 power systems, as well as not being able to fool anyone that it's still a bicycle (for legal and access reasons).
