for 2-3-4 inch stuff mainly
a bit bigger as needed (but nor more than 8 inches, I have a bigger and heavier one for that)

Stihl MS170 for 160 plus tax (normally 180 but for a few weeks they're $20 off)
2 year warranty
or
Echo CS-310 for 200 plus tax
5 year warranty
or
anything else?

I want a lightweight chainsaw that won't break after 5 uses for not more than 2-300
If I'm not in a hurry, anything specific I should look for on Craigslist?

Thanks!

A couple of years ago consumer reports picked the stihl 181 as the best chainsaw under $300. They selected it in part because of how quickly it cut through a 10 inch long. Because of their recommendation I bought one. Pic related

Forgot to mention
Stihl offers two kinds of chains
The low kickback chain cuts slow, because of a shallow tooth angle.

I get the other type to cut faster.

Echo all day every day. fuck Stihl chink shit. don't buy a used saw, never know wtf has been done to it

>> No.1373182

If you want a saw dedicated to small shit I can't recommend electric enough. Instant start, no gas, no engine maintenance, super lightweight, quiet (no earmuffs needed!), and yes it has enough juice for the job. Here's a video. I own the same saw, can confirm it's accurate.

It can go bigger in a pinch (I took down and broke up a 30 inch maple with some clever cuts and 6 battery recharges) but it's in it's element breaking down loose timber. Just make sure you don't buck it too hard and let it cut at it's own pace, the battery will overheat if you dig in with the bucking spikes.

OP here

>>1373178
I have two gas chainsaws
both bought used
both worked well until they were used by friends
I fixed one, I couldn't fix the second

this guy
>>1373151
remembers my "adventure" trying to fix one of them

If it runs fine and if I'll be the only one using it, I'll be ok, I take good care of my stuff

>>1373182
the problem with electric is that you're stuck with whatever brand was your first drill (that's what people buy first, right?) unless you spend more on batteries than on that chainsaw
I'm stuck with Craftsman C3 and I have 4 batteries (more than enough for all my needs)
I have an electric chainsaw (10" bar) and it works ok
>for twigs
anything else is an exercise in patience
and nothing compares to the testosterone shot you get when you rev a GAS chainsaw

>>1373207
sawzall works for 2-3-4 inch stuff
but only for one or two cuts
if you have to cut more than 5 or 10 times then ...

Since I started this thread I found a CS-325 (in very condition apparently) and the seller said yes to $150
If it actually is as described, I'll get that one (same weight as the 310 but a bit more power)

Thanks for all the advice (both in this thread and the previous one when I was trying to fix a craftsman)!

Lemme guess- you are afraid to wear pink, aren't you?

Come out of the closet, the AC sucks in there.

I have a Stihl weed eater and chain saw that are 25 years old and still going. Of course I treat the fuel if stored for over a month or two. The only problem was I had to replace the primer bulb in the weed eater. I have used both a lot on the farm

old ones are almost indestructible and the most reliable machines I had, but the new ones are absolute turd tier

just don't buy Stihl, ever

Bought 3 recently, and new ones have really poor design (poor carb sealing, bad materials, overheating problems, overcooling problems under -5°C)

OP here

>went to see the echo
>looked like new, just a bit dirty, chain looked new
>bit of gas in the tank
>prime it, pull choke
>pull once
>push choke
>pull again, starts immediately (no, it wasn't warmed up)
>turn it off
>got home
>start it again
>want to cut some wood
>chainsaw barely revs, chain doesn't move
>turn it off, try to move the chain, it's seized
>mfw I never had a chainsaw with safety lever

all's good in the end

main take home point out of all this
