So I'm working on a project to make a tool I've designed from resin casting. I've decided on using UPE resin (smell not a problem, have fume Hood). However I'm worried about strenthgth in the handle; the tool is lot unlike a trowel but with foot long handle.

I've been told to look at fiberglass (UPE) resin, but what's the right one? Surely you can't just use boat resin in a silicone mold, can you?

Use mold release and you shouldn't have a problem. Silicone on silicone is when you start running into issues.

You mind giving us more details? Nobody's gonna steal your zoopah zekret tool idea, and we can't give you good advice on what to use when you won't tell us the application.

He actually goes onto /tv/ and makes threads about himself.

i'm keeping it vague because i didn't want to bog down the post with irrelevant descriptions. But if you must know I'm making a tool for cleaning hydroponics NFT channels. basically the head of swiffer floor mop but cut to very specific dimensions and using a shortened handle. needs to be durable enought that i don't worry about the handles snapping off if someone mongoloid strength torques down on the handle. the Handle is a bit more than a foot long and ther's a pistol grip on the end of it, like you see on most vacuum cleaners (as opposed to a simple straigh broom hand)

so do you just pour the UPE into the mold that's lined with fiberglass? do you put fiberglass sheets or strands into it after its poured into the mold? or am I completely wrong about all of this and fiberglass resin somehow referes to a different resin with fiberglass in it? This is actually making me feel a little retarded

Swiffer mops break like hymens at band camp, if that's your standard.

which parts?

if already made one FROM a Swiffer -- not even. a shitty Great Value knock off -- and gotten nothing but praise for it from the people that are using it every day at work

I suppose I don't understand which part you're trying to make? If you're trying to manufacture telescoping rods, forget it. Are you trying to cast a grip for this rod or what?

Great tool idea btw, Im picking up what you're putting down.

It's fiberglass infill, think of it like the straw in daub.

no telescoping. just the handle that connects to the head....
... and also the head. and the universal joint

it wouldn't need to telescope. its a solid handle. If i can get casting down pat and there's a desire for it, I might cast it in 3 peices so that the hand screws off so you can put a longer handle on as well

>do you just pour the UPE into the mold that's lined with fiberglass?

Basically. I imagine the resin you use isn't so important, so long as it's thin enough to fully saturate the fiberglass before it cures.
For a handle of something, I'd use fiberglass cloth, rolled up the entire length of the mold (overlapping if you need multiple sheets of it) then fill the mold with the resin of your choice.

can you add the strand mat into the resin before pouring it?

or can you just kinda stuff in in and pour around it. i'd rather not have to make a gellcoat

you can mix chopped fiberglass strands in with the resin. sold by the pound.
makes castings bretty strong
but if you mix a lot of fiberglass in, it becomes less pourable

This.

Can shred fibeglass matt and mix it with resin if it isn't super thick. Like more than 2 inches. Bonus loints for painting tooling gel coat in the mold and when it gets kinda tacky use resin

Op if small cardboard tube u can just wrap it in some cloth and throw the bitch in there.

Or not even need a mold.

Might could just get some thin ass cotton string or thread. Wax the pvc, wrap fiberglass. Wrap string some to hold it. Roll in resin. Slather bondo on it, chuck it in a drill, and go to sandpaper town on it.

Or fuck the handle all together. Lowes has pincher grabber things with oistil grip handle you could mod
