Been thinking of getting a theremin for quite a while now, but they cost a ton, so I did some searching and found this scheme from a Popular Electronics magazine from the 50s online. Its the nly scheme so far that I found that has a Volume control antenna. Any tips on if this might be possible to pull off?

If you can source the tubes I don't see why not, you could ask hackaday.com forums for more info. If you figure it out please share specs cause I'm interested too, I'll search around myself and post back here.

wave your hands around and have a guy under the table saying "weeeeoooooooooeeeeeooooooo"

>> No.1370240

you could get a sample of the sound waveform and then make it even with an arduino
the waveform is the important thing, rest is just placebo

But what's the fun in that? Also, are the specs for the transformer marked?

Try harder to find a newer schematic. There's no need to punish yourself with that obsolete shit. Well, unless you specifically want to.

I've found someone that made a theremin using tubes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb0NVgEJi54.. Kinda leaning on making it with transistors. time will tell

First of all, manage to get full parts list, typically values of all the component (including transformer).
Tube 5Y3 must be replaced by a modern silicon rectifier : those old ladies are fragile as fuck, and the remaining one should only be used for appropriately restoring old radio/old gear rather than /diy/ projects ; if so a not-center-tapped transformer would do a nice job, if you're able to compute the expected voltage on C19 positive terminal.

also 6C4/6AT6/6AU6 are very likely to be expensive because muh (((audiophools))) using them for gay tube amp projects.
Look for equivalent or, better, "dissimilar triodes" that have similar specs but "twined" into one bottle, typically colour TV "video amp" tubes.

6BE6 is an heptode/pentagrid converter : definitely odd enough and out of topic for any audiophool to massively buy them for (((tube amp))) projects : it should available at a reasonable price, or a direct/soviet equivalent should be available at no absurd expense.

tl,dr; for once this is a good challenge for /diy/, and hams in general : it has all the shit we like, lack of documentation, obsolete parts, and frequency wizzardry to be demystified...

Would be nice if someone took on the project based just on the schematic. Theremins are fiddly things and there seems to be variable capacitors, inductors and transformers that doesn't have any markings on them. It would propably mean sourcing really obscure parts, coiling inductors yourself etc.

To add to what you said, there's also FETrons, which are plug and play transistor replacements for vacuum tubes.
Actual FETrons would be really expensive, but last time I looked there were schematics online that you could use to build your own.

THIS.
Right now I've started some basic reverse engineering of this schematic, starting by power supply.
We all know transformers are expensive as fuck, and this one is very likely an odd one, either a "back-then" standard one.
I've found on another webiste an (updated ?) version of this schematic, published in Poopular Electronics in the 60's that have a full part-list on it
>picrealted.jpg
they list a 240-0-240@50mA transformer, which seems legit considering 5Y3 have some voltage dropout and 6BE6/6AU6/6AT7/6C4 have a max anode voltage @300V, and nominal about 250V which is very likely to used here.
So with a silicon rectifier a 250/1.4142=177V secondary would do a fine job, but this is a odd value as fuck.
But considering we don't need a ridiculous amout of power at the output of the whole mess, a lower secondary might be very acceptable.
tl,dr ; a salvaged 230/3*45 or 3*48V would do a nice job here, 2*48V wired in serie + voltage doubler --> 192V for anode voltage which is plenty enough, remaining winding being used for filament heating (serie).
cont'

About serie filament heating : a 12BE6+12AT6(12Q7)+6C4+12AU6 combo would suit a 150mA serie heater chain for a total 44.1V.
that's pretty gud as /our/ transformator is of the 45V (48V) type, a small 5.6ohm/.25W resistor (bigger 27ohm/.5W) will be fairly enough to *regulate the current* and drive appropriately filaments.

So this is the best I can contribute so far : basic power supply shit, and tube identification for a cheap serie heating chain, hence reducing trannie budget to a 3*48ish@200mA --> 30VA thing

Also we need a name and a pic for this project : I thought about Therememin for the name, and a Moonman playing theremin pic, because he's definitely /our/ music guy

Ohai OP, are you still willing to make your tube theremin like the schematic you posted ?

It has been fun for me to dig in my archives so I can give advice on how to make a cheap version of it, according actual prices, but if it's dead meat I'm leaving the boat and letting this thread on its way to 404.

Post it anyways.
I'm interested, and I'm sure anyone who finds this thread in an archive would be too.

If Op insists on using a tube design, I think there was a Moog model that came out in the 60's that was a transformerless series filament design and used radio tubes like the 12au6 and others which are not nearly as expensive. He would have to add an isolation transformer obviously, depending on the chassis.

I think that >>1373082 is talking about it actually. The only shit that I'm worried about is the fact that the design used some variable caps with funky values if I recall correctly. I'll look for it later today when I have more time.
