Hey /diy/ i've been a tinkerer for some time and i'd like to experiment with night vision. From what i can see there are major differences in the specs and price of a lower tier and high tier (usually military grade device). I'm wondering if i can make a high grade device but at a low cost, perhaps sacrificing its size looks etc.

Well i'm not trying to offend anyone, you can stop reading something if its painful.

I'm directing the question not at the simlpe state of the concept of night vision but aimed at high tier. Will a different brand of camera, resolution etc give better results if i were to try and emulate a high powered night vision. And finding 6k lumens or something worth of IR leds is something someone might know about, and save me some time googling for as its likely cheaper or effecient to buy from a particular website than others.

Often peopel carry around with them revalent spefific information, tutorials are easy to find on the web but doing things that are not readily coming up in google with components that are expensive becomes a different matter.

You will not be able to make anything "high grade," there's a reason top tier, current gen night vision is incredibly expensive.

If you just want to fuck around your house in the dark go buy that little infrared setup that came with one of the call of duty games a few years back. I think kommandostore sells old (gen 2?) combloc surplus night vision too for somewhat reasonable money.

Also, most security cams come with their own ring of IR LEDs. You can just get 2 small compact security cams, strip them down, power them via a battery, strap them to a phone, and strap the phone to your face. There's a little more to it than that, but that's really all there is in basic.

I use a flashlight.

It works because I'm not trying to spy on people without their knowledge or consent. Your situation might be different.

Runcam owl + video goggles + battery pack. Dont need to go the whole expensive fpv rc style. Simple movie goggles wire directly to the camera no need for rx/tx if its on your face. Good luck with depth perception unless your hack two goggles and cameras into one headset.
The owl is one of the cheapest yet powerful low light cameras available to quad pilots. Dont see why it cant be repurposed.

If you want military grade performance you need an image intensifier with a microchannel plate. Making this on your own would require equipment and materials more expensive than if you just bought it. You could buy an image intensifier, but this will be just as expensive as a whole night vision device.

And by expensive to make, I mean you need to stack up a bunch of special glass fibers, and stretch them out fucking long, use a diamond saw to cut off a tiny section of your huge glass thing you stretched, and use a god knows how complicated process to eat away the cores of the glass fibers, and then apply a tiny coating of metal using at the very least some precision high vacuum equipment.

use the method called exIR if you can. don't use conventional IR leds on a round pcb. they are good for around 6m or so. get the bulbs out of exIR cctv cam and mod it to fit in a box and attach a cam that has decent WDR, DNR and no IR filter! or you could take the filter out but its a little risky but not hard.

Night vision is nothing but a B&W camera and IR illuminators. That's it. If your phones camera will do B&W try looking at the IR on your TV remote control. Mount a cheap security camera on a helmet and plug it directly into some VR goggles works great

Yes they do use IR lights. At least the monocles do. It has a switch to toggle it on or off in case there isn't enough ambient light.

Military grade equipment generally means it has a certain level of quality control where it's not super high end, but the low end of the products has to meet a certain stress hold typically.

I don't know why anyone would want to try making their own nightvision stuff unless consumer things are just flat out too expensive. It has some radioactive material in it, or at least the mil versions do. I wouldn't want to fuck around with that.

If you never tried night vision you have no idea how bad ass it is you're totally missing out. Flash lights are way more effective but there is just a fun factor with night vision that isn't there when you have to use it but if you just wanted to fuck around with one it's pretty cool.

Fucking spud do you not understand how thermal works? Thermal vision works using ambient uv light given of by all items containing heat, anything using ir lights is shit shows everyone were you are and is nothing more than black light.
There is 2 types of thermal imaging.
1. Not cooled: this is your average monocular binocular scope etc note the shit quality and range cost around $3000
2. Cooled: this uses a refrigerant and pump to cool the imaging sensor as as it can detect even the smallest heat signature from kilometres away. This is the type of thermal imaging used in attack helicopter drones ect not the extremely clear and long range capabilities of these thermal camera cost around $70,000.

For experiments I'd start with the Panasonic thermal imagery array. Super low res but gives you experience.

Then go to a Flir Lepton module and an fpga to learn how image processing works.
