I have a little project where I want to try to start a car that has been sitting for 5+ years. It's a Honda Civic 1992 with the 1.5.

The mongoloid who parked it that long ago stripped the crank pulley bolt. I need a tap and a new bolt, but I am having a hard time figuring out the threads.

There are 20 threads per inch, and the bolt measures 0.5443" across the threads. Is it a 9/16-20? I am concerned for two reasons.

1. 5/16 is pretty far from .5443.
2. Everything on the car is metric, but I cant find a metric bolt close the same size.

Is it actually a M14-125?

Cross posting on /O/, thanks friends.

Recently got into /tg/ and have decided I want to make a better game board for myself. Plan on using 2'x4'x¼" mdf and routing V-grooves 1/16" deep to make a 1"grid over all but the outermost 2" of the sheet. Once that's complete I plan to flock (the grass material modelers and wargamers use to simulate grass on their pieces) the surface. Knowing mdf swells like week-old roadkill when exposed to water, I wonder what pva glue should I use to adhere the flock to the mdf?

Alternatively, and this will help me with the second board I plan to make (stone/dungeon floor themed), should I put a couple of rattle can base coats down before I go ahead with anything else?

presumably there is a cord to pull that will activate the switch and open the grille.

there is no cord in the image, possibly it is part of the cover that has been removed and replacing the cover will force the fins back into the correct position.

if they opened by themselves presumably when you closed them there was some force applied by the switch mechanism that was trying to keep them open again.

Good news: The DC motors used in power tools are very adaptable to the voltages they can take. So, you just need to get close to the voltage and you will be fine. 8 volts is a sure thing and maybe even 10 volts is okay. 12 volts is probably pushing it but you never know.

Bad news: The DC motors in power tools have crazy high amp draw at stall speeds. A little thing that that could easily pull 15-20 amps if you get the blade gummed up while cutting a board. Even under normal operation, you are probably looking at 5-10 amps while cutting. A power supply that can output that is gonna cost more than a used Skil circular saw off of craigslist.

Looks like that saw just uses two 18650s in special cases. So, 20A max, but there's no way an old B&D tool uses nice cells, and even if it did, it would only be at 144W at rated voltage. I say just start at 8V and step it up until it works or lets out the smoke. Worst case you still don't have a working saw.

>> No.1366371

>>1366366
The best way would to get a 12V wall wart capable of your total power requirements. Then get two DC/DC switching regulators which take that 12V and drop it down to 5V. Make sure they can handle 2.5A. They will likely be a power so package so make sure there's proper heat sinking. The chips plus the other components should fit within the size of half your thumb. Don't bother breadboarding them. Solder them on a protoboard because the extra resistance and capacitance in breadboards cause the regulators to perform poorly.

without the brake, its still so weak that if I set it on wood and start it, it just sits there and wobbles without spinning.
with the brake, its so slow and weak that I can put my hand on it and it wont hurt.

well first of all thats stupid you are blowing air into itself, use something with high thermal conductivity, a heatsink, to draw heat out of a large or awkward area into a smaller area you are actually cooling.

but if you actually want to go ahead with this just realise that the impedance to air flow should increase. ideally you calculate it out so the pressure ratio is equivalent at each point between exiting the slit vs continuing.
or...just think the more pressure you can dump in the less bad it will be.

All switching regulator ICs have application schematics, part values, and even part numbers sometimes. Some of these chips even have detailed application notes which explain in profuse detail what each component does and design considerations. Those can be hard to find. Take a look on the manufacturers website first.

For example take the LM2576T-5.0 for example (https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/texas-instruments/LM2576T-5.0-NOPB/LM2576T-5.0-NOPB-ND/212636).). It is a switching regulator that can accept 4V-40V input, and outputs 5V at up to 3A. In the datasheet, you can find the schematic which says that you need an input capacitor, a catch diode, and output choke (inductor), and an output capacitor to function. In section 8, the purposes and function of those components are explained and some part numbers are listed.

You can learn a fuckton from datasheets and application notes once you have a solid foundation in electronics.

I'm building my own desk, learning as I go, only halfway thinking through parts of it and having to overengineer other parts to compensate. Y'all have been helpful on bits so far, so I thought I'd pitch you my latest issue.

So the desktop is a 16 gauge tube steel frame, it's going to be mounted to the wall on the rear and right, and then it has another tube steel rectangle to be used as the left leg. My first big fuckup was 16 gauge steel. I didn't want fasteners poking out the bottom for me to run my legs into, and you can't thread much into 16 gauge... So I'm going to try flow drilling the hole with an AliExpress drill in my drill press so that I can use an 8-36 forming tap.

My latest issue is that I should have made the leg a half inch shorter. The desk is on carpet, and that'll sink in a bit as time goes on, so I need some kind of adjustable feet to compensate, but I only need maybe 1/4"-3/4" adjustment range, and that'll all be mounted in place and squished under carpet, so I need to adjust it from the top. It also needs to be wide enough to not just punch through the carpet. Do you guys have any good ideas?

I want to mount pic related into my bike in a trash ebike build that i'm doing, and making my own motor mount out of woods seems the most cost effective way to go.
what sort of wood should I use? i know hardwood would be best, but is there any species in perticular that would fit the weather resistant bill?

USB is a terrible way to drive video. It's generally better to find a GPU that's suited to the task.

Video walls are desktop PC duty. You can do it with a consumer GPU. Pro GPU has the advantage of having a range to adjust for very large or very wide video wall. For example, consumer GPU may have 8192x8192 range before it won't go any further, while pro GPU may have 12228x12228 range.

Nowadays, DisplayPort with MST is the way to go. They have massive amounts of bandwidth to play around with. Previous incarnations were heavily dependent on DVI and were typically specialty products for signage and advertising.

You'll need to use some kind of thermal compound to really have any success. They make adhesive pads that work okay for lower temperature stuff, and you can probably get it to adhere well enough but still pull off by just handling it a bit and wearing it out with oils from your hands. Or just use thermal paste, it wipes off.

Also you're going to destroy your battery. Heat is what kills them the most.

>> No.1369511

>>1369506
Will the compound do anything harmful to the phone functionality? Like, blocking signal or something?

>Heat is what kills them the most
I know, that's why I try to make something to reduce the heat. As of now, I don't leave it plugged charged overnight, just leave it on battery until it dies. So far with just putting the heatsinks on top of it + fan, it only warms a bit, never gets too hot. My aim is to make (or buy) a cooling system that will let me to let it plugged on without overheating both the cpu and battery.

>> No.1369513

>>1369506

>> No.1369517

Draining the battery too low is the other thing that kills batteries. I don't know if the compound will mess with your signal, that'll depend on antenna placement and what compound you use, but I would be pretty surprised if any of them really affected it. The heat sink is more likely to be the issue, that big chunk of metal.
>>1369513
Comes down to how effective each material is at transferring heat, how well they make contact with each other, and how much airflow everything gets, but I'd think the metal meeting metal is your best bet. Advantage to the pre-made pad is that it's simple, just drop it on and let it work, versus fucking around with thermal compound and heat sinks.

Anyone have experience with these LED strips?

I would like to power just a few lights (maybe 4-6 likely not more than 10) via battery, but I'm not sure how to get it to work as the battery would need to be fairly low profile. I've been trying 2 button cells which I would think should be enough for a few considering you can by prewired strands that way but over lower power LEDs. Thought maybe a few brighter ones would work over many dull ones.

>>1369461
Buy a cheap Kindle Fire, sideload on Google Play, keep the brightness as low as you can, and enjoy. Larger space and lower power cpu/gpu will heat up less and if it kills the battery you are only out a very cheap device or just have to use it only plugged in, which you would be overnight anyway.

Phones despite all their power wanking these days are badly designed. They waste a lot of that power, and struggle with heat because they want to shove something that would be at home in a Chromebook into a palm sized razor thin device that half the time is sealed for waterproofing into a hotbox. Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately it's not a one time thing, and I need the appropriate tool for this because these nuts hold gears that spin at 540 to 1000 rpm in place so they need to be VERY tight. So far I've been using the tool in the picture to tighten them but it destroys the nut and it really is a shame. Thanks for the help though, appreciate it.

You're definitely in the right place.

It sounds like there is a source of EMI in the area. Did you just install a new piece of electronics somewhere? Did your neighbors? Did you get a crappy Nokia phone? Basically, it sounds like somebody in the area is operating a piece of electronics that is generating electrical noise that is being picked up by your speakers. It's probably not really an electrical problem with your power lines, more likely is a microwave or amplifier or some other piece of electronics in the area that is generating electronic noise.

Guys I'm a cheap peasant who has made full use of dollar store pliers for over a decade of abuse, I don't know 'good quality tools'. I've heard some people complain about cheap tap and die sets being the worst thing you could ever cheap out on while others have said that they've had good enough experiences with harbor freight and aliexpress chinesium. I just need to do some stupid crap with threading 3/4'' aluminum conduit and maybe an aluminum plug for it. I have no idea what cost should be expected for usable taps and dies for this, I've seen some chinesium listings that reviewers said couldn't even start cutting and stripped themselves immediately.

pls halp, what are good budget taps and dies?

I've only used small stuff, think #8 or smaller, but my cheap taps have been fine. I've made sure to go straight (tap guide in a drill press), tap 1 turn and back out 1/2 turn, and use plenty of tapping oil. Never had issues. Aluminum is soft, and if you're doing just a few pieces, I'd gamble the chinesium taps. Past that, I dunno, good "good tap brands" and see what the big tool forums say.

>> No.1371433

>>1371313
The people who complain about cheap taps are the ones who tap 3" thick harden steel on a regular bases, and the ones who have no problem with cheap taps are the ones who tap soft metals (like aluminum) and use the taps to fix damaged threads on small screws and bolts. I personally have a dirt cheap set of taps from harbor freight, and each time I used them I've had no problems at all. If you're super worried, just make sure you use a lot of oil and back the tap out every half turn. Just know what the limitations of your tools are.

So here's the situation:
Near where I live there used to be those medium-sized concrete wells that used to contain the fire hydrant in case of forest fire.

But recently many of them have been emptied out and replaced with better working ones so they're basically left abandoned all over the place.
They're between 1 to 4 meters deep, all concrete.

The question is: what fun things can I do with them?

Go to pet store
Find cat aisle
Find crystal-type kitty litter (whiteish crystals, often with the odd blue crystal)
Buy it - it's silica gel. It needs reconditioning (hour or so at 90 degrees C) when the blue crystals are no longer blue.

So I bought a piece of pine 2x4, just ordinary stuff. I'm trying to make a chair. I crosscut a part off to cut all my other pieces out. I laid out my cuts but when I tried to do the rip cut with a handsaw, the saw bound up really bad. I tried the coarsest saw, largest saw that I had, but couldn't get it to co-operate. I tried a circular saw with a shallow-depth first cut to reduce the amount of material removed, but that didn't help either.

So I look at the board and I notice that I have the center of the tree, and it must be the tension in the grain pulling the cut closed and binding the saw. Is there anything I can do to use this piece of timber? I've read that pine may be an outlier in terms of internal tension. Do I just need to look at the next piece of wood I buy and try to get one that is cut from a more outer part of the tree? Should I use a different wood? I've never had this problem before.

Always well lubricated, and have tried pretty much all five of the speeds my drill press will go out of desperation after I tried the recommended one. Twist on wire connector/wire nut. Sounds like what you had, just spend $5 on a big bag from the local hardware store and be set for life. Solder+wire nut is even better, but don't only solder, because if things go wrong, it'll melt easier and you'll get live wires moving around.
>>1371873
RC 62 is hit or miss even with just HSS. Titanium bits aren't really a thing you'll ever encounter, you're talking about some kind of TiN coating, which doesn't do shit other than keeping things like melty aluminum from sticking to the bit. It's not the bits that's the issue here, something else is amiss. How big of a hole, and how is it failing?

It's probably not traveling over 100 yards, so it's got to be something in your house. If you dont have anything new, then it might be something that you already had that is now breaking. An old tube style tv with a transformer that is going bad would be a good example.

Try turning on something with a speaker so you can hear the buzz, then walk around with it and see if the buzz gets louder anywhere. See if the buzz stops when you turn something off. It may take a while to find, but there is definitely something creating electronic noise somewhere in the house. The only way it's outside of the house is if it's something really powerful like a new radio or cell antenna that just got commissioned somewhere nearby.

The hole is 1/4" and it's failing because even after like fifteen minutes , the bits haven't really removed much metal. They were brand new, so I know that they were sharp still. They just seem to be "skipping" off the dent I already had instead of making chips like they should be. I've tried both pressing with a lot of force and not a lot, but can't get it to work still.

I'd really prefer not to ruin the temper then re-harden, because I would have to send it off for the HT.
