What does /diy/ do in the nature of art?
Does anyone have a screen printing set up?
Sculpting?
Glassblowing?
Metalwork?
Something that is postmodern and strange?

This is basically an art thread but for /diy/. Show off some of your work. Anything related to aesthetics/interfaces can go here too.

I seem to gravitate to art in just about everything I do in life, I have worked as a chef most of my life and is quite the artistic packed career.
I also have a screen printing shop, where I make shirts for my site. and I hire local artists for shirt designs, and most recently I set up a wood working shop where I now make fine furniture. I have a few pictures if anyone wants.

Heres the last thing I made.

Fine artist here, pretty much everything I do is /diy/ or /diy/ related.

I'm currently exploring casting (I created a thread on casting a few weeks ago) and most of my sculptures are created from chickenwire and plaster

I'll actually be making some hair accessories/prints/whatever to make some spare cash for myself this summer. I'll be making my own handcarved beads from plaster and casting them to make them from resin.

I also woodwork and all that fine shit. I want to make furniture and carve the details myself. I'll need to have money to fund that sort of thing, though, which I currently don't

The best advice I can give you is get a set of good carving tools (that basically means expensive ones) and use quality wood (this can be from recycled furniture or off-cuts or whatever, you just need to learn what to look for). A Dremel works wonders for certain tasks too. I mostly taught myself, but I took some classes or workshops, you should look for something like that first, to get a feel for the tools and see if its something you enjoy. I found a ton of books about carving at my local library too.

>> No.133093

>>133080
For carving you need gouges, which are a type of chisel, but with a curved or v-shaped edge. They are very different from regular woodworking chisels and the come in a huge range of sizes and shapes. You can usually get a beginner set with a selection of gouges. A round carving mallet is used to drive them. Rasps, rifflers and needle-files would all be things I use a lot and of course many different grades of sandpaper and steel wool. A coping saw or fret saw is very handy too. If you have a dremel, the high-speed cutter attachments are particularly effective for roughing out a shape.

>> No.133219

My art is that of stand-up comedy.

I craft sets out of bits out of written words out of thoughts.

I mostly just use a pen and paper to write the original inspiration and then work to re-shape it into a digestible form.

Then I refine the rough bits through open-mics and link the strong ones together into coherent sets that I can then sell to clubs and bars one night, one audience at a time.

Though the thrill of laughter is fleeting and I'm not left with a tangible three-dimensional craft to place upon my mantle, the experience of expressing my art leaves a very real smile on my face.

>first-hand experience.
A commercial screen-printing rig is often laid out in a carousel arrangement.

one guy is loading on a shirt (sometimes adding a spray of adhesive first).
Then the central machine makes a step to the first color screen, squeegee goes one way, screen comes down, pulls squeegee back, lifts screen.
The next step (in a multi-color print) would be an automated radiant heater that drops down, flash-heating the ink. (this is also the step where the fabric burns, the ink bubbles or the tag curls)

Then the next step, next step until a guy pulls off the shirt and lays it out on a conveyer oven ( >>136010 ) where the ink is totally finished. Comes out the other end, yet Another guy stacks/boxes/folds whatever.

There is a certain slow beat to the process, so i have seen this set up with two carousels feeding a single tunnel oven.

Anyhow, on a home hobby level this does not have to be Nearly that complex. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO1g2ZaheB4
not vouching for this product, but this shows some of the basic concept. You could get by with loose screens if you are only doing a single color (and perfect orientation is not important) but otherwise something with a hinge and platform would help with lining things up and making it repeatable.
