I made a DIY CFL adjustable light rack by wedging a broom into a metal folding chair and draping a light bulb socket extender with a 1 to 4 bulb adapter over the bristles. I've been using it for 2 years and it hasn't tipped over or lowered the lights once.

This is my DIY mic stand. Composed of a half thermos with two of a candy tin to create a stable base. I had scraps a magnetic screw in a train (his role was to keep a bins against the seats).

Advantage of the magnetic screw is it's possible to put off the microphone without unscrew.

The first 4 photos at the top show everything about it. You can even see the inner holes at the bottom. Some people do place fiberglass inside the walls to help keep too much alcohol from spilling out if it falls over, but that isn't needed. But, there's just alcohol in them, nothing else. The only real trick to it is getting the walls hot enough so there's evaporated alcohol jetting out of the side holes at the top before you start using it.

>Have you watched any youtube videos about soldering technique?
yeah and they say things like to tin the tip, and when I tried it, the solder just kinda melted apart in chunks and fell off instead of flowing smoothly, wiping the iron against a damp sponge resulted in a horrible discolored iron that got less hot after, and trying to follow those youtube and other tutorials more than once usually resulted in an iron that would just not heat up anymore on the second or third try even though there's no obvious damage to it other than the shitty tips that somehow burn under their own heat and are coated in pure helvetica-sodium or something so they annihilate on contact with moisture

I've had success with soldering at school, including tinning the tip and being able to wipe it without it instantly turning into a supercooled brown turd but those are normal enterprise tier irons they probably got for a decent chunk of change each, not some 5$ iron that people meme on me about totally being sufficient for soldering

Sounds like you need to flux the tip and/or sand it a bit to get rid of oxidation in order to tin the soldering tip. You also need to check what solder you have and what flux you have to see if they are properly matched. Then it is all about making sure everything is hot enough where ever the solder touches on the work pieces.

on my last iron, I did try to file down the tip a bit and then tin it after seeing how it burned up and discolored so much when heating and did it even more when I tried to dab it onto a damp sponge. no change after grinding it a little and trying to tin it again. it got a little hot and beaded up and fell off in big chunks that cooled to dull blobs. I threw it out once it stopped heating entirely after another use or two. haven't bothered buying another iron since.

I'm sorry you're too dumb to figure out how to solder.

I'm sorry you fell for the file your tip 'advice' that has been bad advice since before the internet was a thing. Tips are all plated these days. If you rub the plating off, the tip needs to be replaced.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf2vxwm52fU Mr Carlson's lab gives good soldering tips with extra attention given to preserving your tool's life which I don't usually see anyone talking about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIT4ra6Mo0s Then there's this classic series

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SnOW2VdCTI&list=PLD5HGjOqL0TR4t6N8rPCuNUcTxiJaJg-2 and here's your advanced techniques.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zfple3jbmg And louis is fast and dirty advanced techniques but it works.

I'm sorry you kept buying shit irons. You should read some reviews before you buy shit, and if it literally stops getting warm, you could return it because it's clearly defective.

For $30-$45 you can buy a cheap 900M tip compatible temperature controlled 60W iron.. The above videos explain the difference between wattage and recovery time. With 900m you are usually achieving that through tip size and tip changes.

For about twice as much you can buy a T12 tip/handle station, which is pretty high end for a home gamer.

Probably not, but it works

this guy is giving you the best advice you're going to get. The thing is with soldering, or brazing, or welding even. It's all a very similar situation. You need to get the two components that you want to make a joint at the same temperature along with the media you're using to do the joining. It all has to reach that same temperature together. The flux is there to keep oxidation out of the joint and to ensure a smooth weld/braze/sweat. It's all the same process. If your iron is melting the solder, then with proper technique it will heat the two components you wish to join, and life is good. I'm not going to beat you over the head with your ineptitude, you are doing that to yourself here and now.

and a piece of shit that doesn't even get hot is going to achieve this? I didn't know solder melts at room temperature

Why are you even trying when your iron isn't even turning on. Are you mentally challenged?

And it worked once? All I can imagine is you're so dumb you left it running all day and it blew some internal thermal fuse.

https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/watts-to-heat-in-soldering-iron-tip.898474/

Do you not know what watts are? That is how fast your iron heats yo, not its max or working temperature, or how big of a joint it can work on. Watch the introductory pace video, if you knew how to do this, you wouldn't actually have a problem. If you let it sit there and run away, especially without a tinned tip it will oxidize and be fucked, even before the thermal fuse blows.

I said to buy a 60w iron because I have a job and earn money and there is really no reason to save $15 on an iron that is not as nice to work with. Are you out of good boy points for the month? Maybe you should be nicer to anons that are helping you.

I try once, doesn't get hot enough, try again later following a different tutorial, find the iron is literally not even warm to the touch, iron goes to the fucking trash. This has happened three times now.
