I just a few months ago cut an old copper pipe when renovating one of my flats. It was the hot water pipe and the amount of water that can rush out from such a pipe is impressive.
One thing I learned from this is that if you decide to start working on something that is a part of the water systems the building first find out from where you can cut the water and then make sure you have unobstructed access to that place.
These days I have the keys to the shut-off valve in that building. There is only one valve and you have to shut off the whole building.

Pretty minor, but this was just this week. Father's belt sander hasn't worked in years and he never cared enough to troubleshoot and fix. Say fuck it and unbolt it from the bench, and open it up; I'm going to need to use this soon enough. Spend half an hour dealing with screws stripping and find that there is nothing wrong in the case. Motor runs just fine.
Eventually I figure out that it's just a broken drive belt, but I did all this work beforehand, and now I need to figure out how to get the disc off so I can get the pulley guard off. That bitch couldn't budge. I got pissed and started going at it with punches and hammers. Had to get to an appointment, so I left it there. When I got back to it, I made a sort of a gear puller device and managed to get it off, and sure enough, shredded drive belt. If the replacement I ordered doesn't work there will be hell to pay.
I really need to clean up my work area too. My father doesn't do anything but bicycle maintenance these days, and his workbench is a mess. The kiddie workbench he built for me years ago is buried in junk. And the fucking mice.

IT dude here, it's like really small speaker wire so you just use a wire stripper to remove the plastic insulation, then you use a lighter or something to carefully burn away the coating insulation, then isolate the wires and test. Then put some heat shrink on, solder and heat shrink and you're done.

He'll be lucky if he can even get electrical tape to go over such thin wires, unless there's some sub-1mm heatshrink I don't know about. That insulation can usually be taken care of with the soldering iron itself, with a little wiping on brass wool or a sponge of course.

Reminds me of a story a guy I work with told me.

>Used to work at a Carpet place in a high end area
>Couple comes in and picks out a nice expensive wool carpet for their house
>Pay for it and setup the install
>The lady calls to complain that no one showed up to install her carpet
>Boss is pissed that installer didn't do his job
>Installer swears he did the job and he's a good worker
>Boss gets pissed that customer is trying to pull a fast one on them and tells her what's what.
>Lady gets her husband involved and he's a lawyer so he's threatening to sew them for all this
>Boss goes out to the house and it is indeed not the carpet they bought installed.
>Calls installer to come out and explain why he's lying about installing the carpet at the house
>Installer never shows up
>Boss goes back to shop to fire the installer who is now sure is a fucking con artist who is lying about selling carpet and selling it to other people or something.
>Installer gets back and asks why the boss didn't meet him there
>Finally it clicks after they shout at each other
>Installer installed brand new carpet in wrong house
>They go to the house to figure out what to do
>They get there and ask the woman why she let them install carpet in their house if she hadn't paid; she though it was a surprise from her husband
>Husband shows up and starts threatening to kill them
>Asking why the fuck they would come into his house when he's not home and try and scam his wife into buying carpet and how they are con men or rapists
>They tell them that they can just keep the carpet (duh) for free
>Man says that he hates the new carpet and wants the old stuff back (which has been cut up and hauled to the dump)
>Eventually they agree to just pay the guy like 1k to drop it
>Still have to get carpet installed in the buyer's house and end up doing it all for free because the boss basically called the woman a con artist.

His trucks an older pos so I told him to tell them not to touch it and we'd come pick it up over the weekend.

So Sat morning I pick him up and we go to look at the truck. He pops hood and I see that the fucking live wire snapped off from alternator so he had been running off battery till truck died. Anyway I'm crimping a ring connecter to the wire to reattach and this fuckhead in a black jeep pulls up to us. Rolls down his window and informs us that were on private property and cant work on the truck here. This is after this dipshit got 50$ diag fee to try and fuck brother over on 950$. 10 minutes later I almost strained my finger flipping the guy off as we pulled out of there.

Inspectors are lazy lying fucks. Holy shit, when I was attempting to buy my first house, I had to have two inspections due to some discount I was getting on purchasing the house.

>First inspector comes through and tells me everything's A-OK
>Sign some papers, put down money
>Second inspector comes and points out a fucking laundry list of things that are wrong with the house
>Plumbing under the house is busted and leaking raw sewage
>ENTIRE KITCHEN (walls, floor, everything) needs to be removed and rebuilt >Attic is a goddamned aviary
>Call first inspector and light him the fuck up
>Claims he did nothing wrong and totally did his job
>Go through the paperwork he handed me over the phone, with each area of the house that he OK'd that clearly was total shit
>Inspector's manager calls me and suggests we do a conference call
>Tell the manager this is pointless, because it's going to be 20 minutes of "nuh uh, uh huh"
>20 minutes of "nuh uh, uh huh" later...
>Manager asks me if I would like a refund
>YES, I think not doing a job and lying about it warrants a refund
>Asks me how much of a refund I would like; how much of a value do I think the work was worth?
>Pause for a minute to contemplate how absurd this question is
>Demand full refund
>Get a check in the mail for $1 less than a full refund

And that was only the shit that I put up with due to inspectors at ONE HOUSE during that endeavor. The best part was when we were doing the walk-through, I noticed the kitchen seemed really off, and asked the first inspector about it. "NO PROBLEMS HERE!" Lying cunt.

What kind of auto shut off do you have for detecting garden hose leaks?

The only way I can see an auto shut-off detecting a major leak is by measuring pressure and being able to notice a dramatic drop in pressure then closing off.

But then as soon as you fling your half inch tap wide open it is akin to the same pressure drop you'd find if a half inch pipe were to split

I was looking at flowmeter shut offs that automaticly shut off if you use too much water for as low as $10, but upon further research for a good link I cant find any that reset itself.

Thats basically what i want a flowmeter that resets daily hooked to an automatic shutoff. Measure how much water I use if I do dishes, shower, and a couple loads of laundry in a day and set it to that.

Im not even worried about water damage as they would just flow down into my concrete basement, I just dont want a water bill for days of constant water usage if itd break when Im away

When I bought my first house the water heater shit the bed not one week after I closed. I hadn't moved in yet so it had a couple of days to leak into half the hardwood floor in the living room.

I called up the home inspector (who charged $450 for less than an hour of work) and asked him how he was able to report the pump on the drip pan operated well when it didn't exist. He claimed the previous homeowner must have uninstalled it when they moved out. OK buddy, I'm sure that 80-year-old woman took the pump with her to the old folks' home.

A locksmith one. I still keep kicking myself.

>be me, on my training, when phone rings the training in the workshop is taken to the road.
>one of the last, but the most interesting, was a 9/10 qt girl whose sliding door wouldn't open.
>Her dad, and then her, had utterly fucked the handle (this happens all the time) and even the actual locking mechanism, to the point it was all hanging out of where the handles had once been.
>Can't see whats wrong. uPVC and the hooks were in, so no forcing it open.
>Lock doesn't even really exist anymore, so no reason it shouldn't just slide open when using a latch turner. this indeed seems to retract the latch and hooks/shoot bolts.
>Door still won't open.
>headscratch.bmp
>I notice a little dimple on the door, like the end of a pin. It's tiny, really, bout the size of a large nail with a rounded end. Not trained yet, so don't speak up.
>Goes around the other side for a look, which means next door letting him in through their house, sliding up the fence, and then picking his way through the conservatory door (pushing out the set of keys in it first)...and no luck.
>We fuck around for nearly an hour, trying to work out what the fuck. The lock doesn't exist. The latch and hooks seem to retract fine.
>Finally, one of us (I forget which) pull the little pin out. It's an old fashioned locking stud. Door slides smoothly open.
>Put new handles on, get paid, leave.

I mean, it's not a fuck up because little surprises and oddities like that happen, and in the end she couldn't open the door, and neither she or her dad could figure it out either, but it turned a literally 5 minute job into a circus.

>Image related, except without the chain, a third of the size, and as far from the actual lock/latch/handle as you can get, at foot/toe level, and so easily overlooked.

Semi-related question. The Previous Owners were fucking morons and completely fucked the handle on the sliding glass door. I mean total retards here. Even though it was held together with screws, which they sheered off because the door is heavy as fuck, they just tried to glue it back on with super glue. The whole area around the handle looks like shit and in locking mechanism was ripped out when I got it.

Anyway, on to the question. I have replaced the handle twice now, not counting the replacement handle the PO used which was junk, and every time the metal bends/cracks or the handles start coming unscrewed. I've spent $15 and $40 dollars on replacements and none of them hold up. The door is oversized and uses double pane windows. I've already cleaned the tracks and wheels so I can't make it slide any easier. It is just a heavy ass fucking door and no handle I've tried is up to the task. I'm thinking of just replacing everything with wooden handles, but then it won't lock. Ideas?

>> No.1323121

>>1323099

Two out of five jobs you find the customer has made the job harder like that. Hm, got a few ideas. I would first install some 'repair plates' for added structural integrity, if you can do so without further fucking the door (like screwing/drilling the wrong place and shattering the glass). One option might be to initially 'open' it/trigger the latch with a normal handle, and attack a fucking barn door handle to actually pull it around. Otherwise you are looking at some really fucking beefy handles, and if it's uPVC there is actually a semi limited selection on that front.

Take a few pictures? I might have other ideas if I can see a few examples, and maybe make a new thread.

>'barn door'/heavy duty style handle. With bots, or heavy duty screws, it should (being wider against the door) take more force if you use it to apply the actual pressure. The issue is you might have to deglaze the door to get to the other side of the metal to screw in the bolts. Unless you go right through and have the bolts end up outside the door and weld them so some numbnuts doesn't think they can break in by unscrewing them. And it would look hideous.

>> No.1323125

Er, cationary note, don't try and degraze ANYTHING you might struggle to lift/carry, and yours sounds like a big fucker. If that glass pane falls on you it will fucking crush you or at least trap you under it pretty much helpless, and that's if it doesn't break. And remember these fuckers are filled with gas, and have to be put back the same way they were put it, or the heat from the sun won't be able to escape and it will crack or even explode when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Honestly I'd just try a sturdy 3-hole handle with bolts.

The handle on the door now. All of that nasty looking crush is glue from when these tards tried to glue a handle on. I have been told that acetone can remove super glue but I don't want to try it around the white plastic. Otherwise, the door is in fine shape structurally.

The handle is the same handle that went with >>1323130 but uses the outside handle from >>1323131. The holes lined up and the outside handle accepted screws of a larger diameter so I frankensteined the two together. This means I have no locking mechanism because the cheap white handle they used doesn't allow one.

>>1323125
I've removed the entire door by myself from the track to service the wheel and clean the tracks. I am not a manlet so it was easy enough. The door itself is fine. It was a custom order and has no maker marks or tags anywhere on it.It is 8 feet tall (floor to ceiling), which is why it weighs so god damn much.

For the glue, perhaps something like this? PVCu Solvent Cleaner? Pic related. I've not had the opportunity to use it on a mess like that, but it is a solvent clean designed especially for uPVC plastic.

What sort of lock did the door used to have? Or have space for? Because if it is/was a typical eurocylinder, then I would go with one like the first link here >>1323122 with three screw holes and use bolts. You just need to find something sturdy enough that >>1323131 doesn't happen to the next one. I'd also keep the handle you have, and reinstall it a few inches below the turning handle that allows you to lock it, again with bolts instead of screws. That way you cay use both at the same time to open it and lock the fucker.

If it's a custom made exta-large door then if this doesn't work then I'd either get a more experienced lockie in to look or consider just replacing it at ludicrous expense.

Modern kit is honestly 90% cheap and total shit, through out the world, and there will be very few setups that will take the strain of an 8-foot heavy-as-fuck custom door, because everything is either small and wood, or uPVC/composite designed around being a certain size. The bigger swing-and-slide doors aren't even being made anymore to my knowledge.

You really might have more luck with something a little more antique. Shit was made rugged and strong, for massive heavy wooden doors like in churches.

Or even a fucking barn door handle

Sister is lazy. Every time she moves she dumps shit into my moms house. She used the biggest bed room for "storage". Nothing is stacked or packed right. Everything is spreed out single layer in the whole room. One day I went in there a long time ago to put repack her shit and stack it in a corner of the room. I spent about 3 hours cleaning it up. Few days later she came over, went into her junk room and turned it into a mess again.

Most of her stuff is shit. Old mail, school papers, baby stuff, and other junk.

Now when she moves, she just piles her shit into a closet, spare bedroom or shed. She never does anything with the stuff. It just sits there till she moves again. Because of this habit she has moved mice from one to another house.

>> No.1323290

What pisses me off in the past is that family members ask me to "borrow" my stuff and want to "borrow" my nice stuff.

>Brother wants to use my surge protector in his shed to he can plug a heat lamp and fan in for his turkeys.
>Told him it costed me $30 and if he wants one to go buy one.
>Only surge protector I have and using it for my computer.
>Say its going to be for a few days till he "buys one"
>Told him no.
>He just ended up using one of his orange extension cords with a 3 way plug on it.

I loaned out tools in the past. Not power tools or what not, but precision screwdrivers, normal screw drivers, and other tools for mostly working on electronics. Never again. A lot of them came back with chewed up ends because fuckers like to over tighten screws or use the wrong bit. Some of them I never got back.

>Dads girlfriend sees that I have 2 laptops on a shelf
>Can I borrow one?
>Tell her no.
>She asked why.
>Told her they don't work.
>Doesn't believes me.
>OMG EVERY FUCKIN TIME (sister and dad is the same, gotta see it to make sure it doesn't work)
>Show her the netbook, the screen was busted.
>Show her the other one, it doesn't go past the Gateway logo.
>Asked if I will get them fix and if I do if she can "borrow" one.
>Told her that I'm not fixing them.
>She gets mad and storms off.

Only reason why she wants one is so she can stay in bed and play fackebook/pogo games.

>Brother helps me replace a busted outlet in the bedroom.
>First time doing this, only seen images and read from books.
>Told him he is wiring it backwards.

Fuckoff bro. My favorite hobby and past time is digging through old shit and cobling other shit together.

Seriously considering a $3,000 cuckshed for storage. Probably well under $1,000 worth of shit will go in it. Worth it for piece of mind when i bust out a tailight or need a new breaker at 2am. I should probably build it myself but i dont grt off the ground anymore and dont want a 5 foot roof. ...maybe i can build all the trusses and cut and predrill tin and hire out the roof?

Hoarding shit is fun until it becomes impractical. Like my shed stacked to the ceiling i wont even look at till fall. Ir your house starts getting full.

Typically i just go throw out 4 pickup loads of shit when i run out of room.

I knew i was a hoarder when my mom and step dad loaded a uhaul and what didnt fit got tossed. They've never been happier. Meanwhile i get bumbed when i have to toss a pickup load of sgit i will never use.

Community College here is a breeding ground for dumb asses. Most of the students there are there because they don't want a full time job yet after high school and the government pays for most of it.

A small percentage of the students go to a 4 year college. Most just get the associate degree or a certification and call it good but end up working at a job that has nothing to do with what they went to college for. A good amount of the students will go back for a second associate degree or certification because they did nothing with their first one.

Some of stupid shit I hear here from the students/future students
>I went to college for blah blah blah and don't have a job that is related to my study.

I told her to connect the red and white plugs from the Wii to the sound bar and the yellow jack to the tv. She told me she didn't understand. Fuckin really. Told her that the jacks and ports are color coded and showed her a picture of what they look like. She goes on and asked if the yellow has to be connected since the Wii is connected to the sound bar. Told her yes, it has to be connected to the tv. Then she says she only wants the sound bar connected to the tv. Told her she cant because the model of tv she as doesn't have audio out. Says she still doesn't understand. Drew her a fuckin picture and sent her on her way. Still feel like she is going to fuck it up some how.

Middle aged women comes in and wants a micro USB card for her 3D printer. Told her that she needed a micro sd card. She said yea a micro USB card. I hope her 3D printer burns her house down. I should asked her what she does with it because she an no idea on basic computer shit. People also shouldn't buy shit if they have no idea what it does just because its hot, trendy, ect.

Guy needed a power cable for his phone. Asked him what kind of phone. Told him ok, you need a micro USB cable. Showed him where they are and told him as long the box says micro USB that he will be ok. Yells at me and tells me that Im throwing terms at him that he doesn't understand.

>they put their garbage in the garage instead of putting it at the edge of the street for pickup

I had an aunt and cousins that used to live with our family, and they would fill the trashcan until it was overflowing and was troublesome to tied the bag.
Anyways, since they overfilled the trashcan, it usually meant it was heavy, so my aunt would drag the trash outside then tie and dump the trashbag on the floor next to the big trashcan.
Since there are wild animals like coyotes in my neighborhood, they would go and tear the bag open and spread trash all over the front yard. That shit was annoying because it was usually me having to pick up the mess.

Such truth anon.

1st college. Apartment had no windows. Was alsways late for class and exhausted. Pretty sure there was a gas leak looking back on it. Got so far behind said fuckit.

2nd college. Work my dick off learning html, flash, photoshop, anything to do with web design.

Dreamweaver comes out. Now it's easier to make a web page than a word document and it even shows you the code in split screen mode.

FUCK

Godaddy comes out, makes it even easier. Every faggot i know is now a web designer

Flash is on the way out folks. It eventually dies.

Hey life, can i at least get some Vaseline?

Took cisco class in high school and worked my ass off. Wanted a 4 year degree the closest i could get to just making web pages.

My job is redundant years before i finish school.

Never even made a descent site after that. Paying my brother in law to make mine now and i will just manage it.

Lesson learned. Adapt or die. Worth it. Had some awesome parties. Learned a lot about life outside of my 1 horse town.

I just want to be able to afford a property manager and a handyman.

The struggle is real anon.

The second i hit 50k a year quitting job and busting ass on rentals untill hit 100k a year. Then funnel 50k a year into growing it plus equity to buy more. Reach a comfy 3-5 mill in assets, sell the company.

0 debt, 0 liabilities because paid off and ambulance chasing lawsuit theft fags, stashes of cash all over the place as well as other shit like precious metals.

Start small side gig buying rentals all over again until it makes enough i can pay someone to manage shit again.

Work a couple days every 6 months to pull out equity and reinvest in shit i casually shop for.

Make millions again by that time.

Every few properties in llc. And paid off.

Die.

Sell all assets.

Heirs get life changing payday and if they listened to me at all they will be richer than i ever was.

Such is life.

Should have tried a bug sprayer with bleach and water. Probably warp the floor some but may have saved some headache.

Used to be so pissed off about no pet policies all over.

Having no pet policy and $1,000 fine if an animal is caught in the house. Deposit is nonrefundable. Eviction process starts that day. Hire lowes to quote new carpet instal if its ruined. Floors also. My attorney is free. Might never get it. But they wont forget about it and they will never be able to get a home loan or a car until i get paid.

New carpet and shit is expensive I'll be fucked if someone fucks it up.

Tried being mr. Nice landlord.

>dude moves in. Tell him shits fucked up and needs fixed before anyone can live there. "Anon i am a handyman and will fix free. Just take materials off rent!" Against better judgment do. Does and absolute shit fucking job. Leaves a giant pile of shit in the back yard. Have to redo it all, have shit hauled off. Didnt pay rent for 6 monthper er our agreement.

>Anon nunber 2. Is bro from way back. Been great friends for 2 fucking decades. Would take a bullet for the guy. Started a new job, short on cash, says he will paint the inside of the house for 1 months rent. Cool. Not at all worried since new carpet going in. Lives there a few months. Electric in my name because he doesnt get it switched. Short a few months rent. Moves out leaving all kinds of useless shit behind. Owes us $800 to this day while braging about new wife and awesome job that pays on fb. Go to clean house. Half ass shitshow painting. Missed tons of shit. Did 0 ceilings. Had charge account for him at hardware store. He gets two horribly obvious shades of paint mixed everywhere. Have to repaint with new carpet.

it is a design flaw. there's no ventilation. dwellings are never designed to be like sealed boxes.

only time I ever had condensation problems like that was when i lived in a shitty garage basement conversion that was never meant to be built-in to a dwelling space.
>shower has some retard tier extractor fan with a 60mm hole vent outside
>no duct work
>just a fan on the exterior wall and a hole mostly covered by the fan housing so it doesnt blow air
>surprise it doesnt vent shit

>no flue gas heater
>surprise anything that generates heat also generates water here
>basement apartment
>paint is peeling off the walls

>upstairs bathroom isnt sealed
>i keep telling them everytime they mop their floor it rains downstairs
>they insist on throwing a bucket of water over their floor to mop it
>ok its your house lmao
>giant sliding glass door only egress point
>they complain about the noise and tell me i must be wearing it down also why is it always so humid that its covered in condensation open the windows in 0C weather while its raining to let it dry out pls

some people are just retarded. but also in australia its common for dwellings to be ruined by weed grows. people rent for 6 months and turn the whole house into a hydro farm.

Oh, another thing. You should ALWAYS do a video recorded walkthrough with the tenant. Even ask if they would like to check unser the house and in the attic with you if they like. If no have them sign a waiver for it also.

If it's a shithole when they move out record a video of going through the property. Bonus points for roaches and mice and shit. Take pics of cleaning bill or pickup loads of shit you haul away. Take pics of pesticide guy if he allows or the truck at the property at least. And a pic of his bill.

Put it all into a video. Post it to your wall. Tag them in it. SAY NOTHING. Do not provoke them. Watch the carnage. Log screenshots of the shit talking and all of the comments on your post. Print it off. Number it. Keep thumb drive eith copies and your vids.

Looks pretty good, like a little wooden Mjolnir almost. I'll tell you in this thread for the other: good pics. You're one of three or four posters that I lurk /p/ for, the rest seem to be juvenile shitposters. Cheers sir.

Not at all. Quite the opposite actually. I fucking love that so many people have degrees. The public school system did all of the hard work anyway. All you have to do is unfuck yourself from the bullshit they teach and take a little initiative and you can have a whole litter of A+ brains doing the grunt work excited as fuck they have a 9-5 and a 30 year mortgage with a 4 year old bmw to brag about.

My uncle died a few months ago. Me and my grandfather, who is probably too old to do this, go to clean his detached garage. He lives like 10 hours away so we drive spend the gas getting up there. The house was shit, guy obviously didn't care about maintaining it. My great grandfather had built that house by hand during the great depression and most the stuff in there looked like it. Didn't even have AC. Just a giant wood burning furnace in basement and some window AC units. Lucky 90% of the junk had been removed so we planned on sleeping in there with air mattresses. Nope, didn't want to get lung fucked with the smell of must in the air. The garage we came to clean was covered in weeds and hidden shit in the weeds. Finally open the garage and it's full of junk and rat shit. Spiders everywhere plus junk covered the walls. Decide we need to order a dumpster for all this. Look closer and start to notice stuff like nice snap on air tools and wrenches. Probably 100's of screw drivers and other miscellaneous stuff. The guy was a mechanic so he had an engine hoist, 200 gal air tank, 1,000s of $ in hand tools. Spend a week making the place nice so we can sell for decent amount.

Grandfather has to split the selling process with his brothers (my uncle's) son. Son says he will take care of it.

Sells the house for 1/3 the price it's worth, not to mention my great grandfather built it and even my dad grew up in it. Whole family is pissed at him.

That's worth a lawsuit if you care enough. You have a duty to execute an estate responsibly, and selling a house for 1/3 its value and having thousands of dollars of tools disappear is not responsible.

Talking from actual experience, college people as of right now in 2018 are the biggest retards you can talk to. Their worldview is warped and twisted due to living sheltered fromt he real world and being a sheltered recluse of the education system and the media propaganda machine. They have no real world skills, they can't change a simple lightbulb or modify anything, their mindset is that "society" should provide things to them so they don't need to know how to do anything else other than memorizing a 300 gender list. It is literally infuriating and nauseating to see the current state of "academia".

I'm a guy who actually IS in mensa, so spare me the pseudointellectual bullshit you unicucks are going to spill as a reply. College is free in my country and I still dropped out as I couldn't mentally bear the effeminate self-hating cuck madhouse that is university.

I have more respect for a tinkering tradesman than for some worthless and useless unicuck manchild.
