This is an O1 tool steel kitchen knife, about 200mm/8" using very thin 2mm stock with a convex grind. Got it to about 60HRC after 3 thermocycles to get the grain size extremely fine and treated with a hot vinegar patina.
Made a low-level mokume gane bolster using copper, nickel silver and brass, quite a fair bit of fiddling to get that bonded to the steel (high temp silver solder) and actually stay there when it was heat treated. Handle is done in a keyhole-style, basically layers of F4 and G10 squished together with a burl laminate on the outside.
Has nice balance and managed to keep the weight down ok.

>>1312222
Parota, pretty economical for the size slabs you can get and its grain pattern

>>1312248
2 reasons I didn't go full thickness on the resin. Weight, the epoxy in the table as is weighs almost as much as the slab. And the second was that I only had enough to go like 3/4 of the woods thickness, and didn't want to wait for another batch of resin, so I figured 1/2 the thickness of the tabletop would be the best solution

White oak is already waterproof, they age rhum in oak barrels (dont mix it up with red oak, water will flow right through it). You just need to have a really tight seal and some glue that can handle water. The whole thing is sanded really smooth and burned a little inside (like they do with barrels). Thanks anons. I was pretty pleased with myself after I finished it.

The darker brown looking wood used for the table and carcase of the cabinet is black walnut, the doors and all the little little inlays are made from redwood burl veneer. The light wood used for the stringing and banding is Holly.

The cabinet doors are coopered, meaning they're made in a similar fashion to a wine barrel, though, as their serpentine, it's a little trickier.

The legs are were turned on a late, then using an index ring and a router fixed on a special jig I added the grooves for the reading, they get cleaned up my hand using purpose made little profiled card scrapers.

I've been woodworking for almost 10 years now, tis a fun way to make a living.

This chair is made from Holly, with a piano black finish (black leather dye and shellac), I learned how to use gold leaf for the embellishments and I cheated and used pre woven caning for the seat (I've since learnt how to cane preperly). The 6 beads run from the very top of the stiles to the bottom of the front legs, tapering as they go.

If I made it now it'd take me around a week and I'd want at least $1600, if it was an order of several, the price would drop to $1400 for each additional chair.

Not a huge market for this kind of work though, most of the things I've made since then aren't reproductions. Lots of mid century modern stuff and industrial stuff, though I am in the west coast atm. On the east coast there's more of a demand for reproductions.

The union flag certainly isnt racist, but the St George cross flag of england has been co-opted by the skinhead rightwing fringe like the BNP and worse, the EDL, who have a habit of marching about yelling about Muslamic rayguns and Shakira Law. (and complaining because "them immigrant muslamics dont speak england proper" )

In a similar vein, St Andrews' saltire in scotland, the Baner Cymru of Wales, and the Cornish Baner Peran are all associated with the independence movements there, though they tend not to be overtly racist - some like the scottish nationalists are firmly pro-immigration while being anti-english, in a bizarre reversal of prejudices.

Generally, however, the UK has a bit of a "WTF" reaction to flag waving, really. the sheer predeposition of the average American to get all teary-eyed, with a hand on heart sobbing about gawd "bless amurricah" at sporting events is a bit weird to us. We really dont do that sort of thing at all. Unless its a national sports event (think Superbowl/Daytona500 style big event), the Last night of the Proms (music event where people leave all common sense at the door) or something like that, the very idea of flag-waving and all that, yet alone wearing the flag is all considered a bit gauche.

https://themuslimissue.wordpress.com/2016/12/14/merkels-shame-germanys-muslim-rape-map-revealed/

"THE terrifying scale of migrant sex attacks in Germany has been laid bare in a new map detailing the thousands of locations where women and children have been raped and abused in 2016 alone."

"Shocking figures show 2,125 people were sexually assaulted, 199 were raped and and 380 were molested in swimming baths by a combination of refugees or non-German nationals this year.

There were also 319 murders and attempted murders committed by foreign nationals and migrants in 2016, 14 of which were committed against children.

Migrants were responsible for 59 terror offences in Angela Merkel’s country since the start of the year and 112 incidents of arson."
"Thousands of sex attacks and murders have been committed by non German nationals in 2016
The map shows the volume of depraved sex attacks spreads the length and breadth of Germany, prompting calls for the Government to prevent the same happening in Britain by making sure migrants adhere to British laws and values.

Sickeningly, children are often the target of foreign sexual deviants across Germany, with 26 minors raped, 633 assaulted and 286 molested at swimming pools in 2016.

The revealing data, compiled by a German group called XYEinzelfall, also includes an incident of a 10-year-old boy being raped by an Iraqi man in the Theresienbad public swimming baths in Austria.
"

"XYEinzelfall is attempting to expose “the covering up and keeping secret of these attacks” in the wake of the staggering volume of sexual assaults reported on New Year’s Eve in places such as Cologne.

A spokesperson for XYEinelfall told Express.co.uk: “There is a problem for sure. Women are harassed on the streets everyday."

Women are harassed on the streets everyday.

“Women are forced to put their eyes on the ground when they encounter groups of migrants, in order to avoid harassment, but they get harassed anyway.

“Some old ladies have been attacked in their own homes.”"

"This map shows the extent of sexual assaults and rapes across Germany
In Cologne on New Year’s Eve alone 1,222 women reported being sexually assaulted or robbed but 211 of these cases have been suspended by police due to a lack of evidence.

It has prompted German authorities to increase the number of police tenfold to 1,500 in Cologne in a bid to avoid a repeat of the sheer volume of sex crimes during end of year celebrations.
"
"The swimming pool in Austria where a 10-year-old boy was allegedly raped by an Iraqi man
There are fears that if Germany’s open door migration policy is adopted in Britain it could lead to a similar hike in offences.

John Bickley, Ukip immigration spokesman, told Express.co.uk: “It’s important that migrants who come to the UK realise that they must obey our laws & respect our values.

“However, unless the authorities ruthlessly apply the law of the land, ignoring the failed mantras of multiculturalism and political correctness then what happened last New Year’s Eve in Cologne could be replicate here."

i don't live in sweden, i live in scotland.
vocal majority here are pro immigration to a fault.
where i live is in a row of terraced flats on a main street in a large city.
while there are some brown people living in my close they are in the absolute minority, perhaps one in ten the rest are a diverse mix of 'locals' and some easterns.
Every shop on the road since in the past 10 years has changed hands and are now run by brown people.
there are 3 barber shops who won't cut my hair without giving me an afro or a fade. there were two convenience stores who changed hands an now sell only rice and spice, keepers don't speak english at all. the butchers is now halal. antique shop now sells weaves for black women. pubs are boarded over. charity shop has closed recently, interesting to see what it turns into.

its certainly not a no go zone by any stretch, no problem walking even at night, there is a surprisingly tiny number of brown inhabitants, however interestingly i feel absolutely unwelcome in any commercial premises i could walk to.

Yeah, pretty much! Its all completely functional, but sort of a ways down the line of experiments to see how far I can push my own skill/comfort zone... so after about 3 complete disasters and 3 'successes' that actually hang together solid enough to be comfortable. Then some further evolution in terms of the blade and handle shape, so its the one I'm happiest with so far.
Those ones that really blew apart where quite hard for me to mentally bounce back from, losing a huge amount of time, the materials cost a lot and I actually swore off it for a while to go make some comparatively simple blades.

Course, showed it to someone and they immediately put in an order for 3 knives sort of in that style- one of which will have a pattern welded, san-mai blade which I absolutely fucking hate doing (its summer here and about 30-40C so pattern welding anything is a nightmare) but they where just going 'nope', open book, take your time and its really kind of hard to say no to that.
So I'm really in for some suffering over the next month.

*Your mileage and manufacturer may vary a lot, but most of the ones I've come across around the 1045-50, some people say they also come in 5160 but I reckon that's more into the slasher type blades you see being run off a PTO behind a tractor. I'd also run them through at least 3 thermocycles once you've walloped on them for a while to help normalise the steel. Aim for a 900C, then 800C and maybe a 700C cycle, letting it air cool to room temp each time.

meant to say, knock it down to about 53HRC, you'd have to do some digging to find the exact specs

Scrap.
Scrap metal is what they are usually.
Dont learn on mystery metal, its just adding extra layers of variables to your work, when you need it least. Spent $5 to get some 1084, so you know exactly what your material is. its a no-brainer.

Made this at my mums house,

West australian jarrah hardwood decking, had some leftover from the floating deck i built over the paved patio area.

Slating and gates as well. Alot of it was warped, so i borrowed her neighbors decking clamps.

Absolute pain in the arse to do, as the bench was built over the existing open grill with tiled benches either side. The chimney is still there but outdoor open bbqs are illega where i live now, so made sense to turn it into cupboard space.

Guys I need help, I am not a hardcore DIY guy nor am I really good at any of that thing, but I wanted to make something for my gf.
She has OCD regarding wooden stuff, like whenever she feels scared or is afraid she likes to knock on wood, so she carries pencils with her.
My friend has a laser so I learned a bit of illustrator to make a wooden bracelet thing for her but I've no idea how to tie it up and connect it properly.
Any suggestions on how to complete this thing?

I don't have one long cord and I'm leaving to another country soon, and she will fly there in couple of days so I don't think I will have time to find more materials, basically if there is a way to make a nice knot or something like that with what I have already I would be really glad, but any suggestion would be nice.

Failure is part of making knives, long as you learn the hows and whys it happens there's a small amount to gain from it. Though for me it still involves shrieking like a chimp and hurling stuff.
The bowie on the left is really good, normally I don't like them (bowie knives) but the rough aesthetic really has that frontier era look.

>>1318305
It looks lovely, anon! You just have to make two knots; you tie the end of one of the two in the middle of the other one, then repeat on the other side, and you should be able to make them slide and adjust the lenght of the bracelet to get it on and tighten it. I don't know if I explained it well, sorry.

Glad you say that about the knife, it was made to be one of those "that's not a knife, now THIS is a knife." crocodile Dundee style. I wanted a nice looking, shiny, eye catching, pig sticker, And I made it for my dad who wanted a belt knife for civil war reenactments.(Yes I do know the civil war happened (ended) before the battle of the Alamo where Jim bowie, namesake of this style of knife died. But the sandbar fight where his famous blade was first used happen several years before the start. So it's possible that a soldier could have been carrying around this style of knife in battle. Plus I'm the blacksmith so what I say goes.(is anyone still reading this rant at this point? No, just me? To hell with it all.))

Pre-civil war and the colonisation era in the US had the vast majority of knives come from the UK, France and Germany, where they'd generally be a re-purposed butcher knives of various shapes and sizes, commonly called the 'Trade Knife'. Which is an era of cutlery I'm interested in, despite not being american, those there sold all over the world on the rise of industrialisation in Europe.
Bowie's where a mix of Sheffield kitchen/butcher knives re purposed to make them a bit more stabby and borrowed a bit of their designs off the Spanish navaja blades- some made locally of course in the US when they could get steel of decent quality and they remained very popular for a long time.

So much so the Sheffield factories tooled up to make Bowies and shipped them out en-masse to meet the demand for big ol pig beater type knives that where picked up by anyone heading west. Another knife style which arrived after the Bowie was the Arkansas Toothpick, which is sometimes double edged, sometimes a single edge clip point and generally has larger guard to stop your fingers being chopped off (as much) when you're fighting bears, mexicans, drunks, poor losers in cards and indians.

Both the Bowie an Toothpick had a long old popularity in the military and militias of the civil war, never officially issued, but sometimes they'd run with what you brung

This is an awesome thread. Please ignore the posters who pick on the color choice of yer mum's carpet.

I have forged blades, I have built crossbows, I am an enthusiastic selfbow archer. I once welded a mantis out of a railroad spike and huge-ass nails. I built a 10' long medieval trestle table so that I could sit and share home-brewed mead with 11 of my alcoholic friends at a time.
All of this is trivial background notes.

What I wish to discuss is visual presentation.

>>1317158 is a perfect example.
A delightful knife that I would be proud to have made or to own.
The creator worked hard to make a nice picture of it.
Unfortunately, the backdrop is so nice that the viewer is distracted from the true subject of the picture.
This is similar to the 4chan 'rule' of "Don't ever post an image in your Opening Post that is more interesting than your topic."

>>1317161
>>1317162
>>1318300

These are more successful photographs but the backgrounds are still distracting. The viewers' eye is pulled away from what is truly important, which is the work of art that you made.
You want the viewer to not remember the background. This is different from regular photography.

Look at 'studio photography'.

I mention this because I think you all have done some amazing work, and I want the world to to see it presented in an amazing way.
Thank you very much for sharing what you have done.
