Hey /diy/, if you had a plot of land of any size and were able to build any type of home you wanted to live in, what would you include?

My dream is to live like a hermit in a stone tower somewhere in the hills or mountains. Every floor would be connected through a staircase and would have AC and large arched windows. The tower will be surrounded by trees (mainly fruit) and a simple iron fence to limit automobile entry.
The basement would have a kitchen, pantry, washing machine, and general supplies. Would also double as bunker. Bonus: hidden escape tunnel.
Ground floor would be living room/relaxation room, just a comfy space to read and watch movies and rest.
Second floor would contain bedroom and bathroom. Mostly standard stuff.
Third floor would be where I spend most of my time: a recording studio with lots of instruments and recording gear, big windows for view, couch and sofa.
Roof would be used for lookout and large flashlights in case I want to light the grounds at night.
Depends on required space I might also place a storage/work shed outside.

Here's a quick sketch I made in Sweet Home 3D, I'm currently studying Chief Architect in order to make a better one.

I'd build a shop the size of a factory and live in that, since a home is a place to shower, shit, sleep and cook.

It would be a large hardened aircraft shelter. That design is perfect for what I want and hurricane proof. I'd copy the double shelters at Al Dhafra AB, UAE, which have living quarters between the hangar bays and some very, very nice Caterpillar diesel generators.

Honestly, just a nice modern cabin somewhere out in the dense forest.

A decent chunk of property would be nice, maybe something that backs up to national land.

Art room for the wife. Separate workshop perhaps?

already have plans in my head for a house which i dont have money for YET.

half underground, footprint about 7 x 15 (meters)
top floor is going to be living room and kitchen and equal to the back yard, supported by the short sides and spanning the full length unsupported.
front side frame-less glass, backside one full sliding door with a small frame.
lower floor will be for all other rooms

this way all you would see is just a small profile sticking out from the back yard.

i have already got the plans at home and am saving up till we can break ground.

industrial, built to last hundreds of years, possibly even modular.

able to be worked on, the best wiring, sheet steel frame for the building with plaster panels for the walls, thumb screws holding them down (or socket head cap screws or something handy)

able to mount things to the wall/ceiling without worrying about the house falling apart. Would be great for old people too, able to mount handles to aid in mobility everywhere.

Maybe plumbing should be done like the wiring, through flexible hose?

I'm a fan of the traditional japanese/chinese (tang dynasty) housing structure.

A good chunk of land (few acres) that's walled and gated. Inside in the middle is the house and surrounding are sectioned off areas like backyard/front yard/garden/even small pond on the sides. The housing has to be built in sectioned way, not a single structure but split off into different wings.

Overall, I like the idea of a gated/walled house with an inner garden/park. It doesn't have to be super fancy/expensive, even a cheap house + garden would do, the main ingredient being walls+gate to delineate the property.

Are you buttfrustrated or something? The whole gated home concept exist in modern cities. It exists in suburbs. It exists in rural area too. This is America I'm talking about, not some no-real estate euro nigger tier shit. 100+ acres can be had for less than 100K in some rural areas.

If I ever came into money I'd have ~500 acres minimum

I'd build a large home kind of in the style of retirement home-ish. individual apartment units for me and my family and some friends, and my husband's mother and brother as well.

Each unit would have bedrooms, living room, kitchen, typical house/condo amenities.

The central main area would have a large entertainment area, movie theater, large dining room and commercial kitchen with walk in cooler and freezer and a big dry storage area. Under the whole building would be underground parking/storage/work and hobby spaces.

A large LARGE workshop would be on the property for metal fabricobbling and tree carcass butchering.

I'd have a barn for some equipment and a couple horses. and I'd also have a working farm/ranch going on as much as the land would support self sufficiently without any inputs.

My dream is relatively simple and feasible. Decent sized plot of land in the North East (Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire) with a simple, traditional home. No bigger than 2000sqft, ideally 1400-1800, steep pitched roof, two stories, cedar shake siding, tall narrow windows. Basically no McMansion bullshittery.

Solar panels, (either grid or off grid, don't matter much to me) well water, wood burning stove with maybe geothermal or a heat pump as a secondary heating system. Pretty much want to minimize my dependence on utilities, which would save a ton of money in the long run, which makes retirement easier to attain.

I'd also have a detached garage which would be my main workshop. That and a dedicated library room in the home would be the only two special areas I'd need.

I'd probably go pretty wild on trim in there too. Maybe some coffered ceilings and shit.

My dream home would be
likely far up north
half, or mostly dug into the ground/into the side of a hill/under dense trees so it wasn't viewable from air surveillance.
Home would likely be a set of separate rooms carved into the hill this way, so I don't really need heating anywhere but where my bed/comfy zone would be.
Speaking of heating... smokeless fireplace inside with the whole underground air thing going on.
Absolutely zero paved paths or vehicles.

My obsession with space ran out by age 12 or so after I finished researching every manned mission to date. There just wasn't any more.

So I got into ocean stuff. It's cool in a lot of the same ways. The vehicles, the exoskeletons/suits, the torpedos, the habitats.

But there's been a lot more stuff done in the ocean than space because of the cost difference, and because it's possible to turn a profit returning precious metals from the ocean floor but not from space.

It's less disappointing than space, as a fantasy to geek out over because of that. Also the fact that anybody can go and do scuba diving to explore the ocean. Most people can't go to space.

There is also the horror aspect, but that just makes it more compelling. Have you played Narcosis?

If money was no object, It'd be a decent sized concrete home - but tastefully designed, stained / painted / decorated, not some corbusier commie monstrosity. It would be built to look like a ski lodge. Well insulated.

Using concrete because it's non-flammable and soundproof due to its sheer mass.

Between every room and every floor would be passageway to gain access to plumbing, wiring, and hvac. It would have a deep basement for storage and extra quietude if necessary.

There'd be a huge workshop outbuilding with tall ceilings, for storage and projects. There'd be a catwalk to access the high parts of projects, and to access a loft restroom / break room. There'd be a gantry because gantries are great.

The house would be built in the middle of a square mile section of land, densely forested except for a hobby farm. Mixed hilly and flat, with mountain views and a pond or lake fed by a river. Shooting range. I'd use the river as a heat sink for summer, and either seasonal heat storage or wood for the winter.

>move the door to the bath over to the right one door width.
>delete the laundry room.
>move the right side bath wall over to where the laundry room doors were.
>place the toilet against that wall in its own water closet.
>move the sink to where the toilet was. delete the window.
>where the tub/shower combo was. you place vertically stacked laundry machines and wall shelves.
>move the utility room wall over half the width of that sink.
>pocket door into that now larger utility room.
>utility room is now all just one giant tiled shower room with a floor drain. hand held shower head that has a holder up high for standing, and lower for sitting. off to the side you place a very deep self heating soaking tub.
>toilet's water closet is accessed now from the hall through a single bi fold door. use a washlet toilet that has a hand wash sink built into the top of the tank.
>delete the kitchen back door. add counter and cabient space. make the kitchen window wider.
>pocket door the living room closet.
>living room should be raised floor from the kitchen, hall, and front door foyer.
>railing on the right side of the living room. to separate the space of it and the foyer of the front door, closet, and garage door.
>bedroom should also be raised floor.
>garage floor should be lower than all other floors. some shelving in the garage along the wall it shares with the kitchen. to place your wet and dirty clothes and shoes. also think about a utility sink in the garage.

My dream house will be located somewhere mostly flat, but with rolling hills, with a cliff, and deep water access preferably in Europe to be near places I want to be near but am not (also need to be near fast internet +10Gb/s).

Inside the house, a home cinima/screening room (with a minimum of 9.2 Atmos sound), at minimum 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bath minimum, a recording studio large enough for a small band/ 5 people and equipment, a soundstage for video recording, a small arcade with 3 or 4 cabinets, a couple pinball tables, air hockey table, foosball table, and a billards table (would also house game systems and a interactive ttrpg table), a server room to house game servers as well as my home lab and site. A small library with a tea bar in it. I'd also enjoy having a decient size pool.

Kitchen wise in addition to 4 burner gas stove, standard oven, separate refrigerator, and freezer, I'd have a waist high cooking hearth with an earthen oven

Garage wise space for at least 5 cars including a lift. A second garage/machine shop for all my wood, plastic, metal, and other frabrications. Outside the shop, a smithy with a smeltery. An additional 1 car garage as a garden shed.

The entire house would be foot thick poured concrete walls on the exterior and load bearing, the house would then be covered with a couple inches of gravel, a couple inches of sand, and then sod excepting the doors and windows. The back of the house would be facing the nearest civalation and the front the sea. Civalation would be at most 20-30 minutes away at the speed limit, preferably 10-15.

In addition, the entire house would be filled with secret passages, empty spaces between walls, etc.

Lots of buildings (schools, hospitals, restaurants, businesses, data centers etc) have visible plumbing and wiring that meets code.
Code doesn't necessarily mean it has to be buried and hidden, but it does mean it has to be protected from human fuckups.
Example (don't quote me on this) you can't just run loomex between studs in such a way that it's exposed to damage from someone or something falling against it. But if you used electrical metal conduit and pulled wire, that might be okay. Or use BX.

Or build everything to code, then when the inspector signs off on everything, do it the way you want.

Code books will say what is permissible.

Its a tricky question to answer, because there are a lot of variables particularly whether you can source your own field stone and do your own labor.

Pick up a book called "Stone Builders Primer" by Charles Long. The basic principles apply would apply to a small castle, and it cuts out a lot of the bullshit and industry lies/inefficiency about stone masonry framing.

For 150K, in the best of scenario with cheap stone and a lot of your own labor you are looking at a fortified stone bunker and not so much a castle but I am sure you could find ways of making it look nice.

If you aren't planning on laying the stone yourself or having to buy all the stone you cannot build much more than a shed for 150K.

Earth contact, concrete, brick, and wood. Warm feeling in the back with a cooler modern approach out front. Big shop for my trucks and working on them either attached and underground or free standing up on the hill behind the house. Maybe the house goes deeper into the earth for more of a bunker type thing going on. And honestly? None of that is too outlandish to ask for. That could definitely be built.

Why are you acting like having a wall around an estate requires moving the extended family and servants in? Are you so autistic that you can't handle the idea of a building being used in a way that isn't a strict historical re-enactment?

- Three lifts
- indoor aquaponic farm
- underground tunnels leading to outbuildings and distant exits

Honestly...I hate to admit this, because I used to really like the modern aesthetic, but, intuitively, I can't help but associate most of it with "cheaply made and overpriced". Just seen and had to do too many repairs on modern construction (even though a lot of these places have very little in common with the typical wood-and-drywall house).

I think it's the hard lines and all the flat areas. As a guy who tinkers with and designs a myriad of things, I'm deeply familiar with the ease and cost-effectiveness of just using as much un-modified sheet, tube, and other pre-fabbed material as you can get away with. For that reason, I sort of instinctively dismiss anything "boxy" (for lack of a better word) as being made to the lowest possible cost, then dressed up to get as much money as you can for it.

It's a sight better than the rows of identical lots you find in suburbia, but still.

There will be a ramp going through the floor gently descending in a spiral till it enters a Grotto with a pool.

Why does a simple dream like this have to be fantasy?

Oh, boy, you asked the big question from me OP.

My ideal home would be something like:
>Log manor, off the grid (aside from Internet) on a 30 or so acre plot of land with a running glacial fed river somewhere in British Columbia (probably a dozen miles or so from Kitimat or Terrance
>Home would be 5 bedrooms, three full baths with two half baths, study and office space, and a basement leading into a spacious fallout shelter

I'd also probably plop down one or three of these https://coventryloghomes.com/ourDesigns/cabinSeries/GarageApartment/model.html for additional guest space if need be.

or when I'm hosting holiday parties.

All the houseboats I've seen are usually held in place with a bracket around an upright post, so they can raise or lower with the water level without moving. Of course, those were also on TVA lakes and rivers, so the water level cant really get that much higher than the top of the dams.

I want a modern house kind of like pic related. Needs at least a two car garage and a workshop. Put it on a slight slope and have a nice cellar that can be entered from outside.
Set it somewhere in the coutryside and have a couple of trees around it.

You'd think that someone in America would have built a faux medieval castle/commune by now. Americans are huge Olde Timey westiboos when it comes to LARP, Wicca, renaissance fairs etc so I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard to find the funding and volunteer manpower to build a huge functional castle with surrounding farmland in the woods somewhere.

I like houses with Atriums. They are energy inefficent and a waste of space, but I like them.

If I ever build a house it will have an underground/basement bomb/tornado shelter. I see no reason to believe that severe storms will become less likely as a function of my age.

If I'm in hurricane territory, roll-up shutters for the windows. Fuck plywood.

A climate controlled shop for me and a separate garage. I don't want to have to move shit so you can park in the garage.

At least one handicap accessible entrance, because I'm not getting any younger.

Invisible fence wire buried on the perimeter of the yard and a robotic lawnmower.

Light blocking shades and blackout curtains so I can sleep in the daytime when I need to.

If climate appropriate, a rainwater collection system that diverts the gutters to a cistern for flushing toilets and non-potable water usage.

All of the hot water outlets plumbed off of a single line, and a pump at the end of the line that can recirculate cool water back to the hot water heater. (So it doesn't take 2 minutes for the water in the sink to warm up.)

Pex piping, because fuck frozen pipes freezing.

Geothermal heat pump, because fuck electric bills. (It's hot as frack in Tennessee in the summer)

Leaf proof gutters that don't require regular cleaning.

A metal roof.

A south facing front porch with a large roof overhang so that summer sun doesn't come in the front windows.

Evergreen trees north and northwest of the house to deflect winter winds, but not so close that they can fall on the house.

Semi-dwarf apple and pear trees, and grape vines.

No bradford pear trees. They stink in the spring and they split like crazy if you don't prune them every 5 minutes.

An ITcloset with power on an exterior wall of the house near the electrical service entrance with a conduit to the attic and wiring runs to the living room, bedrooms, and office.

High shelves and overhangs for my cats to hide on. Not many, but enough to satisfy their instinctive climbing needs.

A pantry less than 10 steps from the kitchen.

A laundry room.

A laundry chute from the upstairs bath into the laundry room.

The water heater T&P valve and water heater to have a connection to the drainage system.

If the house has a septic tank, it needs to be oversized and have an air pump to make it an aerobic instead of anaerobic.

The gutter downspouts should be metal so they don't chip if someone gets overzealous with the weed eater.

The driveway should have a way to turn around a minivan without crossing into the grass.

Super-insulated walls. e.g. not 2x4s. Brick or block exterior.

The house should be higher than the land around it, Being the low spot in the neighborhood invites woe.

A handwashing sink in the shop.

They're crap on some details, the joints are too thick for example. It's harder and more expensive to build a good-fitting jigsaw puzzle with random rocks, and you'd pretty much need to hire a team of Compagnons du Tour de France to have it done properly.

>>1303735
I like all your ideas, especially the circulating hot water. But doesn't geothermal work better with cool air and hot lava/underground? Hot air lowers the temperature difference and there is less to extract energy from.
And metal roof are noisy af.

The abandoned missile silo is definitely something I can go with.

partly because I love the idea of living underground, partly because I've been into designing rockets for years and it'd be neat to have an actual launch site.

mind you I also want a garage with a car lift because why not, so I'd still need above ground structures, or at least a way to get something as large as a car into the bunker.

I got drunk and accidentally made a rough concept. The foot print is kinda diamond shaped, 68' long, 34' wide. Not sure about how big the hull should actually be, since I cant be assed to actually calculate all the volumes of all this, and do real engineering shit. I designed this with 5 distinct areas in mind, and tried to work them in as seamlessly as possible. Those being a sandy beach, a forest-y grove, a grassy clearing, a grotto, and a cliff top overlook. Also, dont pay too much attention to the green spots. I just used that to visualize where the soil needs to be extra deep for the tree roots. it will pretty much all be covered in green shit eventually.

That's geothermal power. Geothermal heat pumps move heat from inside the house into the ground. They are more efficient than air to air heat pumps by 50% or more.
