125960 No.125960 [Reply] [Original]

Hey /diy/er's. I've inherited an older stereo cabinet from my parents, and I want to modernize it a little bit. Currently inside there is: Am/fm radio, reel to reel audio recorder, record player, and an 8 track player. The record player is un operational, so I will be replacing it with a modern one, I would also like to add an ipod input, and a cd player. Thankfully, the 8 track, and reel to reel use phono outputs, and are not hardwired. I plan on gutting the stock electronics, and hooking up the components to something else (removing the am/fm radio that acted as a switchboard).

This is where I'm running into an issue, I planned to use an a/v receiver to hook all my components into through phono jacks, and then put some speakers in the cabinet to replace the outdated ones. However, I will have to mount the receiver inside the cabinet, and the remote won't work unless there is a clear line of sight. Basically, I need some sort of way to hook a bunch of components into a speaker system, and have the input be select-able.

TL;DR: I need an a/v receiver with either a remote that doesn't need a line of sight, or a replacement for a receiver.

Pic related, it is the cabinet in question.

>> No.126474

first thing you will have to get is a infra red repeater
it is a device that lets you hide your components and still be able to control them via remote

also for the actual electronics, maybe check into a rack mount system? this way it would simply drop into the cabinet

... dunno, its just an idea :)

>> No.126559

lol this has become a heated conversation
removing the equipment should be straight foreward
unscrew, pull up, unplug wires
as long as the unit itself hasnt been plugged into an outlet for awhile, capacitors lose their stored power gradually over time
to be sure, you can always hit the pins with a multimeter

>> No.126573

I really doubt that op has tubes. Nobody really cares about 8 track. Reel to reel may be worth a couple hundred though, if it works. These stereo cabinets are a dime a dozen, go to town on it.

To get the signal in, just add another couple feet of cord to the end of the infrared bulb, placing it outside of the cabinet.

>> No.126583

Going to leave the 8 track and reel to reel in it, I'm only updating the record player due to it not working.

I'll try my hardest to not to touch a capacitor.

I'm also going to look into an infared repeater, and a rack mount. Thanks guys!

build a bracket so that you can install it virtically into the cabinet (faceplate up)

some yamaha and sony receivers come with an ipod dock
the yamaha comes with a front usb so you can actually plug straight into it without buying a dock
also, i see you are adding a input switcher in there, save yourself the trouble and look at another receiver with more inputs

you are wanting to reuse the existing record player and reel to reel?

I'm using a new record player, the small portable one pictured. The reel to reel is staying in, even if I can't get it to work.
I'm going to make a storage box for cables/remotes where the am/fm radio is, using the front panel of the radio as the lid.

The reason I picked that receiver is, most other receivers had a ton of unnecessary video inputs like hdmi, cost way more, and are lacking on audio inputs.
Plus, I work at radioshack so I get a discount on that one, and it's only 100 bucks to begin with. I would be willing to spend a bit more though if I could find one with tons of audio inputs.

thats where your going to have to search, modern receivers dont have a phono input
you need one of these if you intend on using the record player or 8 track or reel to reel because these all have a phono sudio output
without the dedicated input on the receiver, you will be required to buy a phono preamp so that you can get the signal to the regular audio input of that sherwood

>> No.128880

when looking for replacement speakers, you will have to match the speakers to the amp, in this case the ohm rating of your receiver
most receivers handle 8 ohms but some will drive 6 ohms
you can also look into car audio speakers if they meet the ohm requirement, just dont look for anything that is rated over 150watts rms
maybe like a set of 8 ohm 6x9s?
also found another receiver that has a ton of inputs including a stereo phono...

The sherwood's manual says to use speakers over 16 ohm when using both the a+b terminals. It is a 100 wattx2, for a total of 200 watts. This means each speaker should be 16 ohm with 50 watts?

Here is the manual. I'm really thinking this one is going to be my best option.

>> No.128922

it shows that you can use 8 ohm speakers for stereo
and you have to bump up to 16 ohm if you put 4 speakers on it
sounds like it can overheat easily with such a high ohm rating
being that your setup is stereo, your good with 8 ohm speakers

>> No.128930

i know you really want the sherwood because you can order it from work and all, it only has 4 inputs and based on the manual, the amp cant handle much unless you add an external fan blowing into the case

see if you can get the Sherwood RX-5502 through work instead, the amp is stronger and can handle more speakers @ 8 ohms
looking in the back picture of the console, it looks like 4 speakers
there is a company called Eminence that makes reasonably priced speakers up to 16 ohms
you can do research here http://www.parts-express.com/
find something that would work for your specific setup and search amazon to find it cheaper

>> No.128941

i think the cheapest way to put speakers in there is to find 8 ohm 6x9s and replace all 4 with them
you should get pretty good bass response and modern speakers typically have separated drivers low/mid/high or also called a 3-way driver
so sound will be exceptionally better

>> No.128943

The rx 5502 looks good, I would only need a two way switcher for the bluetooth/1/4 input. So that would save a bit. A bigger amp would help a lot. I'll check out those speakers.

the actual output of the receiver amplifier is rated by RMS and Peak wattage
RMS is the actual power that it constantly outputs
in the car audio world, the manufactures usually advertise total Peak power which is generally 2 times the RMS
for example, a car amplifier advertises that it is say 600watts
600 peak watts divided into 4 speakers (channels) equals 150 peak watts per speaker, take the divided by 2 method and you get approx 75watts per speaker RMS

taking this information and applying it to the sherwood for example is as follows
advertised 200watts, 4 channels 25watts rms each or 50watts rms into 2 speakers
