Hi /diy/!
I am buying a car soon, it has a limited aftermarket though and it comes with a rear wing spoiler on it that I'm not a large fan of.
Now I'm not gonna claim I know aerodynamics better than the manufacturer, but I'm not a big fan of the designs that are available from the aftermarket either, so I'm thinking of running it without a spoiler until I can fab my own.
Pic related is the style I like, it's called a high lip spoiler.

Anyone got any tips on how to fabricate this and have it look nice and clean?

I'm a boat guy not a car guy but I could make something like that with plywood and fiberglass in a week. Couple days for cutting, gluing and fitting the ply. couple more for glass layup and one to two for fairing and finishing.

Majority of serious (not for looks) aero on cars really only kicks in to appreciable levels over about 120-130km/h, you can diddle with the angles to have more downforce at slower speeds but it tends to tangle you up at higher speed runs.
Otherwise, you're probably just better off performance wise to remove most of it and reduce drag

The obvious answer to this question is
>if you have to ask, you can't
Because getting it to look good is a totally different story to just being able to make it in the first place, and if this is your first time trying you aren't going to get it right. You're also doubling down on the difficulty level by choosing a style of spoiler that conforms to the panels.

If you'd like to forge on ahead and give it a go anyway, because fuck it you need to start somewhere, then you need to make a plug and your best bet for making the plug is to use foam. Extruded polystyrene, the pink stuff they use for insulation, is a good choice because it is easy to cut and can actually be sanded. Wood is a good second choice but it is definitely harder to work with. My suggestion would be to use the foam. Figure out how you want the spoiler to look, then cut a few dozen roughly-shaped cross sections out of your sheet of foam, before securing them in place on the car. You will HAVE to work on the actual car since duck tails conform exactly to the panels. Alternatively you could buy a spare trunk panel if you want to work on it off the car.

So you get your foam cross sections, glue them to the car and to each other, then you shape them with sanding blocks and knives until it's 90% the look you want to achieve. Once there, you do several thick coats of wall plaster. It's easy to sand and apply. Using the plaster you get the plug to 98% of the look you want to achieve, before doing some final skim coats of bondo. More sanding. The plug of your spoiler is now complete.

Then use fiberglass to take a mold of the plug (just google how, it's straight forward), finally you are able to remove all the foam from your trunk lid. Use the fiberglass mold to produce a fiberglass part. Then glue/screw/rivet that part back down to the car.

How hard could it be?

Also you should cover your trunk in something before you start gluing foam to it and sanding. A layer of blue painter's tape is a good choice because it's waxy and tough.

Alright, sweet.
That sounds close to the process I had in mind but clarified some of the steps (considering I'm not a huge DIYer other than repair.)

I understand how aero works, semi-serious track day driver, this is purely aesthetic for my DD.
The car is designed to have a spoiler, the trunk looks really empty without one, but the standard spoiler is too aggressive imo.
