So assuming its not a major part I would just replace it. but if it was something more intense like an axle or shock I would probably recommend going to a golf cart repair place. but pretty much all we told him is we arent saying he wont get a ticket or whatever all we are guaranteeing him is that a tuk tuk will come and he seemed pretty cool with that

60 miles. Is that good or bad? Lead batteries are heacy and you can add more but dont get carried away. If you only need 20-30 miles on a charge but a little more giddy-up you could buy smaller batteries of the same voltage.

What size batteries and what voltage you run? And if you could get the model of controller we may be able to fix your rev limiter problem. Or at least make a few runs for fun and see what it does and put it back.

If the batteries shown in the image are used, then 40Ah is 5s2p with standard 6-DZM-20, 45Ah same with a 22Ah version (same size), 50Ah with a 24Ah version (same footprint but higher) and 60Ah may be 5s3p with standard 20Ah (more space required). This would be the easiest upgrade.
Charging and discharging is handled by the battery controller. Charge time (40Ah) is specified as 12h for the first charge and 8h after that. Charge current is limited to 10A (2p) with a max. voltage of 70V (5s). Lithium batteries can not be charged that way and would require a different controller.

On the alibaba page for your tuk tuk it says your motor is 60 volts. So you'll probably have to rip those 36v lithium packs on ebay apart and arrange enough in series to get to ~60v. Those are the cheapest, highest performance batteries you are going to find, at least until Tesla releases their 21700 cells in 2020 for only $100/kwh

A key component is the battery controller which handles the mains adaptor input and the 72-cell solar panel. It generates 70V from the 36V panel and prevents over-charging as well as over-discharging of the 60V battery. Lithium toy cells are no match to the robust 6DZM20 batteries and reliable lithium car batteries are still very expensive. Charging lithium cells is much more delicate and needs a totally different technique (e.g. balancing and protection) that the LK1500AC battery controller does not provide.

Of course a high quality BMS will be required. But those 18650's are not "toy" batteries, they're high current 2,000mah that can put out like 17 amps or something. But they shouldn't since you'd put a ton of them in parallel with individual fuses like a tesla battery for an application like this. It's just like a bigger DIY e-bike battery, they're very common and are build with much cheaper cells than this with decent success. Just look around youtube. This guy covers most of the doubts people have about these ones in particular.

16s seems common for 60volt e-bike batteries, but obviously at full charge of 4.2v each cell would be higher than 60v. So I'm honestly not sure if that'll work as is or if you'd need a hefty buck converter.

There are 16s 100 amp balance charging boards on ebay that would work, probably with same voltage converters already in it for the mains and solar panel.

Glad to see the business end of the tuk finally. Looks like a standard golf cart rear end - should be more reliable than the hub motors.
As I mentioned in the last thread, I do lithium conversions for lots of smaller EVs. Forget about 18650s, too man interconnects to fail, you'll need a tab welder, and that many parralllel connections makes a BMS worthless. On BMSs, they are almost always the point of failure when things go boom. Just get a large ah capacity, dont overdischarge, bulk charge, and manually check cells periodically.
Get a 'cycle analsyt'', a Meanwell HLG series potted/ip67 power supply to charge with, and some 60ah Nissan Leaf cells or HK 20ah multistar lipos, and a $5 cell checker.

A thousand connections isn't that much work if you use a spot welder like you're supposed to. Lots of people use solder but the extra heat degrades the batteries and it takes a lot longer. Properly done, you could fit a lot more power on that tuk tuk with a lot less weight, for less money too (as long as you're time isn't too valuable to you, lol)

Actually, as the other guy pointed out, you might not need to assemble the batteries at all. The 36v hoverboard packs can probably be used in 2s configuration as is, you'd just need to wire it all up.

Sharing some of my hunt for a Fugitive frame. Pic related is what Bongs do to Fugitives- they seem to use them as bargain Lotus clones.

Found one in north michigan with a VW motor in it already for $2500 obo
https://nmi.craigslist.org/for/d/sand-rail/6290876130.html
TBQH not a bad price considering it comes with a VW motor that I could use for something else, but it's all the way in fucking michigan. Look at those lovely clean lines tho.

Another 2.3l Pinto engine. Priced too high for what it is and again, washington state. Why are people in WA obsessed with putting Pinto engines in sandrails?

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=650868&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
I bet this guy has posted on /DIY/ before.

https://chattanooga.craigslist.org/cto/d/corvair-powered-fugitive/6339473420.html
Closer to me, but is built nicely and not cost-effective to break down. Also, where do they find sand in Georgia? But it's probably a nice fast suicide machine with that Corvair engine.

https://roseburg.craigslist.org/snw/d/fugitive-sand-rail-frame/6307048474.html
Finally, a bare frame! Except it looks like a Berrien Buggy in the windscreen pillars. I don't know if that's really a Fugitive. And it's too far away.

https://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/d/vw-rail-buggy-sand-rail-no/6330888893.html
Close to me. Berrien Buggy looking windscreen but I can always change that with an angle grinder and welding. Part of why I want a Fugitive frame is I think it's lighter and that will help.

You really have to read the thread for pic related, he put spikes all over it because he "really, really hates trees."

Kept searching, found something way out of my price range BUT:
>fiberglass panels
>FRONT A-ARM SUSPENSION WHAT
>comes with a trailer worth 2k or so
https://nashville.craigslist.org/snw/d/dune-buggy/6285831897.html

Then I found this:

>Definitely in budget.
>ISSA CHENOWTH (very high build quality frame)
>motor is failed, good negotiating point + lowers price
>red wunz go fasta

>chenowth, good quality
>ehh

Thinking I could get some prebuilt modules like these instead of DIY 18650 hackjobs or whatever, if I catch some on sale. Haven't started price comparing yet.

>Tesla Smart Lithium Ion 18650 EV Module - 57 Volt, 3kWh [18650-3] Price: $690.00

This guy's shit seems overpriced compared to that:

If I can keep the rail light enough, I can probably get by with less battery.

Bruhhhhh.

Those little pintos are great hopped up in stock cars and sand rails. I bought an alchahol burner and threw it on a sandrail.

For shits and gigs i built a big "drag plate" on the back. Had cut brakes on it.

Pop it up onto the plate. Cruise around the Little Sahara vertical.

You should see the ambulance dune buggies. You fuck up at the dunes and a turbo 4 banger flys out there, straps you on the back on a flat aluminum plate, and rides a fucking wheelie to meet the amberlamps at the gate.

Got to watch a new guy learn how to fly. Looked fun af!

Also, if u find like a 60s beetle you can sell the body and just have a roll cage built. Maybe stiffen up the frame?

>Torch off front end.

That's retarded. Use a recip saw, zip discs etc. to minimise kerf, Before cutting SCRIBE many alignment marks across the cut line. Scribing makes thin marks easy to align for reweld.

That's how you build one unibody car from two wrecks BTW and it's older than anyone reading this, or me.

Since it's technically a motorcycle with less than three wheels an engine pull and two separate shipments should do nicely. I'd only cut as a last resort.

Fuck no. You need a lot more capacity for a welding skid. If you are talking skids than you presumably have an engine drive welder and do multiprocess so need storage, gas cylinders, OA outfit, grinders, hand tools.....

Go to welding forums, not here, for welding questions because no one is going to write you a book in a thread that will vanish in days.

Go to Weldingweb and the Miller forums. Not here. Then look at skids in the projects sections which hold the equipment you want.

Of course you don't mention precisely WHAT you are doing, so mention it there, not here. Want professional opinions, go there, not here. You'll see why and be delighted you did.

Consider those forums the new Welding Sticky. Read the sticky!

A Ranger or Bobcat would be far too heavy and extremely tippy for a junktuk.. They'd overwhelm the pathetic drivetrain and tiny brakes. A Ranger or Bobcat plus cylinders, stands, reels and tools is 3/4 ton or better territory.

You could cheat on any pickup truck doing local work (no DOT scales) by installing 3/4 ton or better rear springs from salvage and welding stop blocks to the overload leaf pads on the frame so they remain in contact with the overload leaf. Old wrecker trick I've done several times.

If you have a welding business, buy a real truck (not a junker you'll lose money on when it's down). Many begin with a trailer if their truck sucks for easy swapout.

You need to study what rig welders do for ideas because there's nothing new to invent. To succeed, copy success.

Keep an eye out for a liftgate once you have a truck. They are very simple to install and great for picking and placing heavy shit. They are also heavy but I've had a 1300 to 1600 lb loads in my F150 with liftgate (and coilovers, Timbren urethane springs and Hellwig overloads).

i just love how this thread rolled from a gay ass tucktuck to manly dune buggy's. Way to go /Diy!

Dune buggys always fascinated me and i plan to build one - one day. Thank you for the links, i learned a lot with these anon.

One stupid question thought, as most buggy use VW motor for the Rwd, would it be manageable to modify a Fwd engine to make it Rwd without fuck tons of modifying?

Well in all fairness, half of us dunebuggyposters want to build badass electric ones.

It would probably be possible to get an adapter for the engine transmission/transaxle. People put Hondas and Subie engines in dunebuggies all the time.

I would assume so. But probably if you wanted to get serious about a lithium powered dune buggy you should go looking on craigslist for used Nissan leaf battery packs.

You can get some remarkably good deals and the huge hardback book sized individual cells are easier to work with. You would need thick rubber gloves to avoid lethally electrocuting yourself and you'd need to add a new BMS (unless it comes with one in the pack? idk)

>> No.1265772

>>1265767

hmm considering it.

http://www.diypowerwalls.com/t-Average-Salvage-Success-Rate-18650

>Also, if you want the best deals possible, skip ebay. Go to your local scrapyard. I was able to purchase laptop battteries for $1.25 PER POUND. not per battery, PER POUND. Even after fully testing all the cells it means I paid only about 30 cents per cell. You are never going to find a price that good on ebay.

I found out about after market nissan leaf batteries from my uncle who lives year round on a lake with some other more distantly related relatives.

He has a little aluminum dinghy propelled by a 12 volt trolling motor running off 4 Nissan Leaf battery modules in series with no BMS (he individually charges them when they need balancing)

The dinghy is just to go a few hundred feet between his dock and the neighboring docks. I think the biggest gap is only a little over a thousand feet and he never does more than 5 miles in a day.

Apparently it runs for fucking ever on one charge. It's optimized for lead acid so lithium is huge overkill. He once didn't charge it but kept using it to see how long it would take to run out.

It finally ran out after 12 days of average usage, just making quick runs between docks.
