How would I go about diagnosing the problem with this ancient Toro Moist O Matic sprinkler system? I can't find any info about it online and we have no owners manual for it

>problem? wut problem?
operation is simple enough - turn the main dial so it corresponds with the time of day, push pins in to water at that time, 4 levers for length of watering time or manual on/off - its all clockwork, that, an input valve and 4 output valves.

Connect water to input, have all 4 valves off. Switch them on one at a time (the levers to ON), se if they work. The rest is just grasping how the timer works, fuck about with setting pins till you happy with the awatering periods. And if none of it works, well... DROUGHTTIME

Won't turn on. I'm messing with the wiring and it seemed like a connection had been broken and when I reconnected it I now I'm hearing a rhythmic sound from the box but nothing is happening

>> No.1248017

>>1248015
Yeah that's the clock drive motor.

Set it to turn on by turning the green set time knob and have a pin pushed in to trigger it, see if it turns on...

Or wait to see it the dial turns itself...

So the ticking is good? What about the hydraulic system? I turn the knob to "on" but no water comes out of any of my sprinkers

>> No.1248023

>>1248021
Ticking is good.

A. Sure they have water?
B. Sure the wires are live at the values?
Push all the pins in.

>> No.1248025

>>1248023
A I'm not sure, it may have been turned off but I don't know where the valve would be
B im not sure, how can I check? I have a multimeter

>> No.1248026

>>1248025
be off at the valve, you dont need a multimeter, if it ticks, its working. They are (literally) not rocket science, just, get the water valve on, you good. Probably.

>> No.1248029

>>1248025
You have to find every control value ( it switches the water on) and test them and you have to find the water valve and make sure it's on.

Usually what happens is a pipe breaks or the valve fails open and the homeowner disconnects the system and it never gets repaired.

So be expecting a fountain effect somewhere on the grounds.

Find the valves and post a picture, I should be able to help from there...

Ok it seems like the main valve did the trick and water is coming out of them. Many heads are broken but others seem fine

Further: at first the back ones would go off when station four went off but now none of the different stations work. Because the system relies on water pressure does the main leaking one prevent the others from properly working? If I fix those one or two heads should the rest fall in place?

I just spent the entire Summer trying to figure out over 30 years of sprinkler repairs that were made here at my home... You have clean out the service well and track what those pipe connect to... three different pipe systems, copper, galvinised steel, and three types of plastic all clusterfucked everywhere. Five leaks repaired, three valves replaced, and two new service wells put in.

Best of luck.

>> No.1248051

>>1248046
Sounds correct. You will have to flush dirt out of the system now. Take off the spray heads and run the system after you repair the pipes. (Since it's plastic crap, might as well put in new heads all around).

>>1248049
Fuckin A that sucks. Like this park looks like the same hydraulic wiring at the box, does that mean some dipshit cut it?
>>1248051
How do you flush the dirt? And you run the system after removing all the heads?

>> No.1248056

>>1248054
Yes, flushing involves taking the spray tip off, remove and clean or replace debris filters if they have them and make turn the system on. I just ended up putting new tips and filters in because fuck it!

Yeah that controller may be the start of the next issue.

And look at the pic I posted inside the box, it should be clean around the valves. You want to be able to see them.

Ok I'll clean around the valves tomorrow, dig out excess dirt and muck. This sounds like the start of a huge project. Will this thread stay live for a while so I can keep asking questions? I know this board is slow but I'm not sure how slow
