I need to cut a long piece of sheet metal and the only tool I can use is the hacksaw. How can I keep cutting after the spine of the saw reaches the edge of the metal?

>> No.1229334

Naw man

Saws all or a big shear.

For the second option, go to an hvac shop. I'm sure they'll do it for a box of donuts. And it'll be straight.

I'd better explain this further... At the moment the only non-powertool for cutting metal I have is the hacksaw, but I could potentially buy some other cheap tools for it too. The main issue is that they'll have to be quiet, which is why I'll need to cut this by hand.

not everyone likes sweets. I'd prefer pic related, or if that's not available, a nice egg mcmuffin with canadian bacon would do I suppose.

>they'll have to be quiet,

sheet metal. I'd go with a laser beam or some sort of acid.

I was once working in a fairly small basement room that had concrete walls and basically nothing to absorb any sound, when the HVAC guys came in and started cutting ducts. If I had been armed I'd probably have shot both of them. I suppose they must be deaf since it didn't seem to bother them enough to wear hearing protection.

diy is full of uppity wankers who look down on people who dont have a full shop to work with

the only thing i can think of if taping either side of the blade and cutting like that it will take a long time but people dig out of prison with spoons soooo depends on your will power

Where I live, no machine shop does anything cheap. Having this piece cut by professionals would certainly cost more than I'd be willing to pay.

Not to mention it's against the idea of doing it yourself.

Have you even started hacksawing yet? Its not quiet at all.

5 minutes with a jigsaw, which would sound like you vacuuming the floor would do wonders and nobody would bat an eye.

You hack sawing away for over an hour straight is where you are going to get into trouble with your neighbors.

What is it with OPs being functionally retarded?
Have you no critical thinking skills?

OP here, I'm working on body modifications for my car. I know it won't be perfect, but for a mad max style it should be good enough.

The reason I need to use silent tools is that my landlord forbade welding and angle grinding within the house and its yard. Now the closest place for work like that is 19km away, so I'd rather not drive that distance for one small piece.

>>1229364

I have used tin snips before, but they bend the metal horrendously and make ugly, irregular pieces. I really wouldn't trust them to get straight enough edges for welding.

So you need to weld it anyway? You might as well drive to the shop, there's no way you're going to be able to hide while welding.

If you are welding thin metal without prior experience then the slightly irregular piece of sheet metal will be the least of your aesthetic concerns.
Welding cars is hard as the metal is thin and if the car is old or even oldish there will be rust which will make it even harder.

Take the sheet out on the road and cut it with a grinder, he doesn't own the road as well does he?

>> No.1229435

>>1229427

Yeah this will work. Rent a cordless angle grinder, drive somewhere like a large and mostly empty parking lot or just somewhere you have space to park off the shoulder of a road. Bring a couple sawhorses. BZZZZT. Done in half a minute.

>> No.1229577

If you want to be sketchy, take a hacksaw blade and wrap a few inches of one side with tape. Use that as a handle, hold it like a knife, and start sawing.

What the fuck
why is this even a thread
BUY THE RIGHT FUCKING TOOL.

Zip wheel on a grinder will do the job much faster/easier/cleaner/safer than a fucking hacksaw.

A sheet metal brake would be an even better tool. The metal shops around me will cut to length for next to nothing. Give 'em a cut sheet and you go pick up what you fucking need.

2/10 for making me reply.

How about a jigsaw? A general purpose tool that will pay for itself on many projects, as long as you get a variety of blades. Typically a cheap power tool.

This but with some cardboard or a rag. So your hand doesn't hurt using a tiny tiny handle.

If its thin then score it with a stanley knife then bend it back and forward with those sheet metal vice grips. If its not, then use a tablesaw, or a circ saw if youre brave enough.

>> No.1230333

>>1229722
Actually not. Just pointing out that it doesn't matter if the piece of sheet metal is a bit off. Welding is just going to be trickier that the actual cutting,if you want it to be pretty.
I weld my cars to keep them running. I have done mostly welding on cars so I know for sure how annoying it can be.
A friend of mine (who welds as his day job) fixes his cars so that he can't find the welds even himself after he has painted the car. Annoying...

If you can't use an angle grinder in the house or yard, why not get an extension cord and do it on the street in front of your house. Alternatively you could purchase your own property and do what ever you want on it.

>> No.1230671

>>1229330
You can do this by peeling back the cutaway so it clears the body of the hacksaw, easy.

OP has painted himself into a corner. Driving 19 klicks isn't shit and would be much quicker than fucking about.

"The idea of doing it yourself" is intended to be PRACTICAL, not retarded, because the goal of DIY is fucking results and/or training.

Welding and fab aren't quiet.

The answers you get are free. Responders are under zero obligation not to correct stupid ideas.

>but muh ideals! U r all buyfagz! (tantrum ensues).

>>1229404
OP needs to practice and NOT on the workpiece! Many noob welders don't know you need to practice on SIMILAR scrap (and use that scrap to set your machine) then do work when you know how to produce your desired result.

Go to welding forums like Weldingweb or the Miller forums. Anywhere not a welding forum is shit. migwelding.uk is decent for Eurofags because it covers their equipment better.

The first goal of serious /diy/ers should be equipment.
