Hey guys, I have this old "police" flashlight with the heat lamp, guess everyone does. Ever wondered to convert it into an LED? Have you ever done it yourself? Any tips? I was trying to search for a project of this sort, but did not really find anything good. Maybe didn't use the correct words.

pic related, the torch

you can buy LED conversion bulbs from Maglite themselves

i've looked into making my own but you essentially have to force a high power LED into the form factor of an old xenon bulb. the little housing for the bulb is plastic so you won't be able to dissipate much heat and the center of the filament is above the base of the reflector so you'll need to deal with that. it's a lot of work when you can get a high brightness led flashlight with lithium cells for far less than conversion of an old maglite.

>the little housing for the bulb is plastic
LEDs are more efficient than incandescent lamps
in this case efficiency means conversion of energy into light compared to energy wasted as heat.
An LED with the same light output as the original incandescent bulb will therefore put out less heat.
a 6D maglite runs pretty hot, you can feel the heat on your skin from maybe 10-12 inches away. don't worry about the plastic melting.

however

unlike resistive elements an LED draws more current as it heats up, if it is allowed to run too hot it will try to kill itself.
if you can ensure thermal conductivity to the case it should be fine.

of course depends on the led you want. if you managed to squeeze a 100W led in there its not going to go well anyway.

you mean a maglite?

I have a 2C that I put a new led module into (and posted on diy about it) and it's the brightest light I have now....it runs off 2 18650s and provided you don't make the mistakes I did, it doesn't take all that long

it will take some modifying and you should get a glass lens for it

can post some beamshots later if insterested

malkoff makes drop ins for most maglites. very pricey though.

could you post everything you've got?

I live on acreage, so my 4D maglite is a daily use item.
I bought an $8 led bulb from Lowes.
Its 3x brighter and standard D cells last about a year.

There's a lot of different options, like
>>1184724
But if you just want the simple upgrade, it's as easy as changing out a dead bulb.

you mean other flashlights?

not a very impressive collection by CPF standards; couple of older 18650s, $5 cree lights, and a better version of those that also takes an 18650

^this one is usually the one I use the most, nice wide flood and plenty bright....although the single AA ones are great to have since the batteries are more readily available

the maglite is almost too bright to use inside, I wanted a good thrower if I go out walking at night....the module I chose is single mode, $20 shipped from dealextreme

I have one of those old maglite. I made a Joule-Thief-like circuit and put a 3w led on it.
It works, but is not awesome. Not for a 2D cell at least.

well... I was lazy and just placed a shitty white led (not power led). Now it adds a nice ambiance to the darkness

You probably can convert this, but spending some time with LED headlamps I'll never go back to hand held devices. You should try them out.

That's just an old maglight. You can get an led conversion for about $10, takes maybe 2 minutes to swap..

it's basically this. I just add a 0,1uF cap in parallel with the resistor to make it oscilate faster.
>>1185276
Yeah, those leds don't work at all. I try them.

My plan was to make a circular pcb to fit the flashlight with it, but i got lazy and just fit everything with glue
