Hi /diy/, I've been playing around woth the idea of creating a faux neon sign with EL wire like pic related, but have basically no prior diy experience. Does anybody know about the topic or extra materials required?

Nope.

I would consider using some small diameter heat acrylic tubing and a heat gun with a form or template thogh. If u get frosted or sandpaper it then it would look similar to a dimmer neon sign. But neon is too fucking bright anyway. Your pic related seems legit as is tho. I imagine hot glue would work well so u can reposition shit if u need.

Or router a small chanel and glue it in.

Dark non reflective background like flat black is master race.

You need el wire and the little control box driver thing it comes with because its high frequency or voltage or some shit.
You plug it in and power it up and it lights up, can't really go wrong.
Stick it to some card or plywood put something. Black tape over any bits you need to hide.

Thank you guys. I'm going to order the wire soon and maybe make another thread once it's done

Hey m8, illumination autist here. I offer you some advice.

EL wire is a great starting medium for faux neon, however it does have some cons. It is more expensive than other mediums like side emitting fiber optic, isn't as bright, and offers little in the way of control. It does have its advantages in being able to splice wire and change the color in the same segment in doing so.

Pic related is EL wire.

As this anon suggested, hot glue works well for sticking it down, or just about any type of adhesive. One of the good things about EL as well is that i can hold its shape pretty well versus side emitting fiber optic.

EL needs high frequency for excitation. The frequency inverter you will get will squeal like a bitch. Get some foam and a small box or case where you can pack in the foam around it and close it up tight to get rid of the noise.

Side emitting fiber optic (pic related) is nice in the sense that it's lower voltage, it's brighter, will last ages longer, and if the LED dies you just replace it. I forgot to mention that EL has a relatively short half life of 10,000 hours (it will be half as bright at that time).

Cool. U should. Or this may be alive still. Never done it but i have studied it.

If you really wanna diy you can cut bits of el wire and solder custom lengths up.

For sure need that converter box tho. Can run off batteries or likely u will want an old wall transformer to plug in.

Shit's cheap tho if u just wanna buy premade.

Keep in mind after a year or two of constant use it will start to dim a little and need replaced or deal with it.

I might make me a sign now. Hell...

Side emitting fiber optic????

Do tell!

Plays hell if u have tinnitus.

Is why my other one rip.

You can make a somewhat sound proof case pretty easily, just get some foam to stuff a plastic case tightly and seal it up. That high pitch whine really does a number though. I don't even have tinnitus and it bothered me.
