Full of shit bruh.

Their overhead is much higher because of all the procedure and beauracracy. Fucking even Google the term "overhead" and I am sure they would talk refer directly to operational expenses.

A fucking Bangladesh ship breaking company has a lot less overhead than an American ship breaking company because of the LACK of safety.

The OSHA advantage is that they receive less legal expense because they are covered through the administration. Which in turn for a massive contract is a plus.

I work at one of the oldest refineries in the country.

But almost half the plant has been replaced in the last 30 years.

There are some parts that are old as fuck, but they've been maintained. Now, realize I say maintained, not updated.

We have a huge cat cracker from the early 50s, the top of the reactor is somewhere above 200ft. The fractionator is only slightly shorter. They sit about 80ft apart. They have a catwalk that connects them about 160 ft up in the air. It scares the shit out of me. God damn, and heights doesn't bother me, only this one spot.

The catwalk is barely wide enough to fit a person. It's seriously connected by 2 i beams with diamond plate on top and angle iron running from 1 side to another. No mid rail, no toe board, just bracing every 10 feet welded to the i beam. Rusted to hell

I nearly shit myself the first time i was half way across and realized what i was standing on. That's my osha nightmare.

>Their overhead is much higher because of all the procedure and beauracracy

confirmed for not knowing shit. procedure and redtape is cheap as fuck.

pajeets don't have government mandated health care, pajeets don't have unemployment insurance, pajeets don't have disability. pajeets aren't generally highly trained individuals with specialized skillsets that are difficult to replace. why the fuck do you think bangladeshi's would slit your throat for a chance to work under these "procedure and beauracracy"?

you getting hurt in america costs a fuck ton of money and that's why the emphasis on safety exists. insurance companies do studies on this stuff to determine risk and companies that have the safety nazi mindset get huge breaks because its proven to reduce mishaps.

this isn't even about OSHA you ignorant fuck.

Here's a perspective from the other side of the clipboard.

My job is to learn, know, understand, and teach the latest job safety practices and standards to people who would otherwise keep doing things the way they want to, the 'easy' way, or the 'fast' way.

Yes. Some of the shit we make you do is infuriating, pedantic, and seemingly inconsequential.

But my job is to make sure that you go home every night to feed you dog or cat and possibly your kids if you're one of those freaks who has kids. Its my responsibility to minimize the risk of maiming or serious personal injury not only because of you as a person and fellow human being, but as an extremely skilled and valued company asset. You are an investment that the company made when they hired you, trained you, etc. From that investment the company gets a pretty significant return in exchange for your work.

I'm sure you can appreciate that a mill going down in a shop is lost money. A worker being unable to work for ANY reason is a very real loss of income on the books. We can't keep you safe from the common cold, or the other drivers on your way to work. But by god above its my responsibility to minimize every risk you take to the best of my ability and the ability of the tools available regardless of how much you hate me, or whatever names you call me.

>clipboard warrior for 15 years
>current position for 10 years
>in those ten years, with 110 employees in a heavy industrial setting there's only been 3 days of leave due to injury at my site.
>three other sites owned by the same company are lucky to go a few months before losing three days.

I have guys call me asshole and worse names behind my back and to my face. Ive had guys threaten to kick my ass. I'm pretty sure a quarter of them hate my guts and would openly applaud at my funeral. I don't give one flying fuck what you think about me as long as you go home at night with all your fingers and toes.

not really. if you look at where the money goes, the inefficiency and time wasted derived from having an overbearing safety guy is completely overshadowed by even a single lost time mishap.

aside from having a safety nazi on staff, i've resorted to tying health insurance premiums directly to the amount of mishaps. if someone gets hurt, thats $100 less a month everyone else on the jobsite is going to be making. at that point, everyone becomes a safety nazi.

Is this trench where we are laying conduit to a new structure "construction" or "industry"? Who decides that exactly? why is there a difference in the distance for the spoil and why not change both to say it has to be back by the same amount?

But it's all cool. Hell, I don't even go into fucking trenches. Workshop4lyfe. The safety guy has way bigger problems then me when most of the scheduled OSHA-10 class just fucked off and didn't show so he has to schedule them Again and pester all the foremen Again, etc. Biggest gain from the class was learning I was right (and busybody polo-wearer in the head office was wrong) about company ppe policy overriding the warnings on the drill press to not use gloves.

People are assets but that aside I have never understood why an individual would takeon more personal risk for the same amount of pay? Lets play it out in reverse. If you walk up to two blackjack tables and all other things being equal the odds of winning at one are 10:1 and the other 100:1 you would expect a higher payout for going with the longer bet. Working without safety equipement or putting yourself in a situation where an employer can question you if you get hurt is like taking the long bet for no additional reward.

I had to watch this full video once. About a week later a dumb shit nearly cut off my leg with picture related. He missed training that day.

The fucker wasn't wearing eye protecting or the harness. The weed eater was very heavy and had a sapling cutting blade installed on it (not string). The fucker had been operating the thing all of 5 seconds when he got some bark in his eye (so he says). He took a hand off the tool to wipe it out, lost control of it, clipped a tree, went flying and clipped me with it right in the god damn knee. Three surgeries, two screws, two severed ligaments (including the patellar ligament) an allograft (donor tissue from a dead person), and 150 stitches & staples later I have the knee of a 60-year-old football player. I can't bend it back all the way and I can't squat because the cartilage is chewed up. I was 26 when this happened. I will need a knee replacement around age 45.

Had a childhood friend, a really good guy, used to be a YouTube video of him trying to repair a building while Alex Jones badgered him with questions. Anyway, he was out working in a chem plant yard doing maintenance, had a stiff neck, so he went to pop it, paralyzed himself and fell into a fire ant mound. He died two days later from the trauma.

I have. Fortunately for me I'm not a numale pussy and continued on because it's not that big of a deal. It did however make me glad I had safety glasses on because if it would have hit me in an unprotected eye it could have been bad.
I'm all for safety, and take precautions per my years of training. At home I operate a heavy duty weed eater with safety glasses, hearing protection, and long pants. Anything else is ridiculous overkill, but I'm sure someone will post about how I'm wrong, accidents happen, blah, blah.

Carpenter here. I do concrete work, frame, and exterior finish work.

Anyways when framing there are metal hangers that go on the end of our joists. And there are several ways to go about nailing them.

1, Hand nailing. Labor intensive, installs as fast as you can drive 16 pennys into the prepunched holes.
2, Palm Nailing. Use a pneumatic hand nailer and it is the slowest method but the least labor intensive.
3, Hardware Gun. This gun is made to shoot nails into prepunched hardware. This is the fastest way to install your hardware but the gun costs 400 dollars.
4, Framing Gun. This method can be just as fast as the hardware gun but is dangerous as the nails can fly back at you.

So me and my foreman have to nail off 100 joist hangers one day and I am not handnailing. Fuck that I am using my palm nailer. Now I could have used my framing gun but I have been slapped with nails before and I have learned my lesson but my foreman wants to go fast so he is using his framing nailer.

He is installing them faster than me and halfway through he says, "Well I guess the old man is kicking your ass today" Immediately afterwards he goes back to nailing and a nail jumps up and smacks him across his safety glasses, welting his upper cheek. He stops for a minute to check it out and goes back to nailing the joists with his gun. Another nail jumps up and smacks him across his upper lip opening his face up. He stopped working for the day after that.

I want to try thinking of the original reasoning for this list just for fun

>Risk of drowning in small draining pit
Does it lead to a bigger pit, say one close enough that you might slip in the smaller pit and land in the bigger one?
>Motor oil storage.
As far as I know, if something is designated as flammable storage then NOTHING flammable is to be near it, even if nothing stored there can be ignited by a cigarette or whatever. It's all or nothing, probably because it'd leave room for "Wow I thought it was fine to smoke near this flammable storage" after some fuckup cascade happens
>Life jacket to push 2 button on a catwalk with a railing next to a pond with no rocks in it.
Obvious answer is in case the catwalk has a structural failure, less obvious is that it basically means that if someone falls into the pond(Not due to catwalk) without a lifejacket and drowns it's less liability for the company since they'd have to be disregarding both the lifejacket rule and every "Don't do stupid shit on catwalks" rule for it to happen
>Electrical
That's pretty valid, and the reason he checks in places like that is because no one else does. Out of sight places are usually the most common ones with cut corners or lackluster maintenance, and for that reason the most prone to cause problems
>U need 3 points of contact because u cant climb a ladder with your water jug anon.
Climbing ladders while carrying shit is really just a good way to injure yourself, by falling, pulling a muscle, dropping said object, etc
I think it's one of the most common causes of injuries on ladders, it's definitely easy to say "Yeah I got this" until you lose control of it and don't have a firm grip and realize there's going to be a problem

>Blinkers that dont work on your haul truck that u dont use. Better fix that.
If it's insured and registered as a company vehicle, then it damn well better be in operating condition. "Not using it" would not matter, only if the company "can" use it and it's in shape to be used
>Better have a guard so you dont reach in and grab a fucking vbelt like a tard...
If working nearby it's good protection in case of a slip so someone doesn't accidentally grab or hit it
Another is that when machines are off and the inner workings are visible people are more prone to poke around at it. All it takes with a v-belt is the machine being off, someone walking by and seeing that the belt isn't set right/has some crap in it/whatever, fidget with it since the machine is off, then the operator elsewhere hits go and the other guy has a bad day

Most of the rules exist precisely because something stupid happened and people got hurt, and a lot of seemingly bullshit rules exist because shit happens and for something to go wrong you generally have to break multiple rules

As a more straightforward example, the 3 rules of gun safety
1. Finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
2. Always point the gun in a safe direction
3. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
It seems overkill, no?
Say you break 1 of those rules (accidentally or not), everything will be fine right?
But breaking 2 of them is how people get shot on accident

>> No.1171723

Hand nailing 100 joist hangers off is very labor intensive. There are 12 holes per the hangers we were installing. So thats 1200 nails and you arent taking a break. And while I do work for a production company I try to work smarter not harder.

As for the nails we use on subfloor joists they are 3 1/4" galvanized framing nails. We dont use metric to identify our nails but I am sure its on the box.

Palm nailers are a good tool to have. I own 2 of them (a full size and a mini) but I am a professional. I would recommend a full size over the mini as it drives nails more efficiently and I only break out the mini for super tight quarters were I cant get into (rarely but it happens once in a blue moon). 50 dollars is what I spent I want to say. Also make sure you oil it before every use.

My company is the quintessential OSHA nightmare. I've been there just under 3 years, we have had 3 Safety Managers in that time and just hired a new one, 2 of those quit after 6 months because of the absurd number of reportable and time lost accidents. Somehow, it's OK to have large pieces of hot metal being driven around by 60 year old alcoholics, but it's the company's fault when these same employees damage safety equipment. Company has racked up $100k+ OSHA fines recently (one visit). All of the dangers were caused by the "skilled" union workers that OSHA is there to protect.

>3x $5,000 fines for employees not wearing seatbelts on forktrucks.
>same employee
>drove by OSHA inspector 3 times

Thats fucking idiotic. Company ppe policy should never trump a machine or tools manual. Same for inspectors. No one knows how to use something than its maker.

If the manual says no gloves it is probably for a good reason. All care should be paid to using the tool properly in a safe manner but if the maker of any tool/machine says you shouldnt do something, rather than to simply be cautious of something, then you shouldnt.

Gloves can get snagged in certain machines I would guess and the same goes with jewelery, loose clothing, and long hair.

I now believe tgat it is to slow the fuck down and not work 100 hours a week chasing my tail. Also, am study personal finance and investing because i dont guess i can work till 90 now.

May have been a REALLY hard earned blessing. I'm not just some pipe dream faggot playing powerball. I AM going to be rich. No if but when. I have 2 houses and already seeing results.

I have debates with my almost layer buddy and can arguably hold my own with him avout real eatate and business law to the point he was talking shit to his proffessor about it and he called and said he would have coffee and mayne write me a recomendation letter. I just chuckled and as politely as i could told him to get fucked. There is no reason to waste time aucking lae dick when i can read a few books cheap and learn enough to hire good lawyers and communicate with them. I dont need to physicallyfile motions and sue or defend myself if i can have other people do it while i build more assets or sip keystone light on a beach. Nb4 hurdur redneck.

Fucking right i am and proud. Gonna be doing the same shit when im rich soon. Just putting busa motors on side by sides and shit instead of having a yard full of mowers.

I know wtf i want. And it aint much

It's awkward when it's your boss doing dangerous stuff. Used to work in a kitchen that had pretty good safety procedures; one is when you're walking with a knife carry it pointed straight down at your side. This is important in a fast paced crowded kitchen. Every now and then one of the owners liked to come back and "help". She had the disconcerting habit of walking around holding the knife at chest height, pointed outward like a miniature lance. After a couple close calls someone showed her the proper method.

So glad to hear when they said safety is first & foremost. "If you have to call an "All Stop" because you're not sure of something, do it. No one is going to write you up, fine you, or retaliate because of it. They might call you a pussy but it'll just be a joke. I wouldn't have had a problem with it, except they only had small and medium sized gloves and I wear an XL

I got chewed out once for not using one while cutting veggies and an explanation that I physically could not use the gloves and do my job at the same time was no use
boss made me put the gloves one, which did not fit and only gave me use of two of three knuckles and refused to put in an order for properly sized cut gloves because I could fit my hand in even if I couldn't use my hand

If you feel it in your shoulder, have your neck and shoulder checked including nerve conduction test. I have peripheral neuropathy on my dominant side but it's due to waiting too long to get my neck checked out. A C3/4 fusion ten years ago would have avoided that.

It's difficult to diagnose such damage on your own. Never assume shit.

>first time doing this job, ask hows it done

>if the chain snaps it could hit and kill me

The problem with those water heaters is bad installation.

I have 3 in my house. At 100 coconuts each they are much cheaper than a boiler that costs 10,000 coconuts after shipping and duties and that's before you re-plumbing the whole concrete house while will include chipping up tile and chiseling concrete wall. It will cost a additional 15,000 coconuts if I do the re-plumbing right. I would need to re-tile 6 rooms and fuck up 4 walls, that's if I don't want hot water to the kitchen and laundry but forget that as it is not shower. There is no basement so I would have to find a house for it which would be another cool 2000 coconuts.

Then there is no gas mains and who says a third world plumber would install a boiler properly if he can't manage a simple shower head?

Total cost of 3 shower head heaters?

300 coconuts installed correctly

Total cost of boiler 27,000 coconuts

As a maintenance manager for a large hotel I make 28,800 coconuts a year and I can barely afford to keep my Suzuki vitara running.

So it will cost 93% of my yearly salary (before taxes) for me to have a boiler improperly installed with no parts support so it can blow up and while most of the house would be alright someone is likely to get hurt.

The better alternative is a solar water heater but then there is still the re-plumbing issue. The house was built in the 50's and will probably outlast my kids, kids. When the roof is replaced in 25 years (30,000) it would be easier to re-plumb from the top so maybe then I would be able to afford solar water heating.

It doesn't get colder than 26C so it's not so bad
