Hey /diy/, got a little pet project for you guys.

I work for a rather large municipality and a big part of my job is to take out the trash.
Sounds simple, right?
Put in a trash bag, next day, pull it and replace the bag.

Well, our cans come equipped with bolted on lids that only open partially.
This is to keep the seagulls out.
They eat the garbage and shit in the water, lowering the water quality and littering the beach.
Bags don't stay in, they sink right to the bottom.

The result is: double the manpower (2 people need to lift and flip a heavy can and dump into a bag) , double the money spent on bags (tax $$$) and back injuries/hernias.
I dump hundreds of these things a day on top of the stuff I already have to do.
My municipality wont replace the cans, we're talking 3000 plus cans that are compliant and they're paid to have because of the advertisements on them.

If I could find a way to secure the bags in the cans where they wont fall to the bottom and I can simply rip the bag out, we could save tons of money, manpower and injuries just on this one simple fix.
So what do you guys suggest?
(btw, if we rip them off, they're replaced and we get gouged for like $90 a lid)

>TL;DR How can I keep the trashbags from falling down in these trashcans?

No idea, post some detailed photos of the cans, flange and innards so we can actually see what the fuck you're talking about.

Also, why aren't you addressing this obvious design flaw with the manufacturer?

We bitch non stop about it, technically we're not supposed to even put bags in them and supposed to wait for the trash truck to get them.
So many guys on that truck and gotten hernias and back injuries.

twisting lock lid would be a good design idea for the cans, for the liners, a removable flexible (maybe metal or plastic) 0 ring/band that fits smugly around the the inside/top would be easy to use. It would use friction to hold the bag against the inside of the can and would be be protected by the bag that you are pulling out, requiring less cleaning.

Retrofit the truck with a Can Lifter/Can Tipper, a hydraulic clamp with a flipping mechanism to dump into the truck. The most common units are fit for those roller bins with the metal bar but manufacturers also produce them with clamps to grasp barrels. Then it would just be a matter of dragging the can over and making sure it was turned the right way.

The systems are not free but they are 100% designed in reaction to this problem and are supposed to be competitive with the costs of paying for trashmen getting their backs replaced. Abandon liner bags altogether.

right, Im grasping the problem now - for anyone else as retarded as I, a summary:

(i) bags fall in as partially-opening lid does not allow bag to be fully hung round the outer rim - front is hung round the rim, back (where lid is bolted in place) just hanging there, as no rim. Bags fall in.

(ii) bins cannot be replaced entirely, (cost, etc.)

If thats all true and accurate (?) its basically a retarded design, maybe add a rim somehow at the rear of the bin, or, an inner spring bag holder that keeps the bag in place, or, inner spring and additional interior rim. Or something. But the basic problem remains, you cannot rely on hanging a bag over a rim, when you only have 2/3 of a rim to hang it on.

So, yeah, the problem is that these cans are not designed for a liner/bag but someone decided to waste the time and money on this fool's errand.

>> No.1167439

I got a solution.

Drill a 1/2" hole on the top of the smaller unmovable part of the lid, near the rim.
Put bag in, fold edge around the exposed front part of the can rim.
Pull slack taught, gather it into a twist and poke it up through the hole from the underside of the lid.
Tie off slack in a knot.

Variant ideas:
a small X of 2 simple intersecting cuts instead of a hole to provide friction.
Impaling the slack or knot pulled up through the hole with a stick or something.
Two holes with smaller amount of slack pulled up, one longer stick impaled through both pieces of trash bag.

If it was me, I'd do the hole thing on one can to see how it holds up through a couple cycles, then if it works well go and do 'em all with a cordless drill next time around.

>> No.1167443

>>1167439
Also, might be that with the size of bags you're given, a smaller hole diameter might work better. Smaller bag diameter: less slack: knot might fall through hole. I just liked the 1/2" hole idea because it'd be easy to stick your finger through it. Could always get them to order larger bags, right?

removal, just pull or cut the knot off if untying it is too slow, I guess.

On second thought, I bet gathering up a twist and poking it up through the hole first, then folding bag down over the rim before knotting the slack would be easiest.

Okay. Best thing to do is make the whole lid removable. That way you can insert bags stretched properly over the rim PLUS are able to later pull out full bags with out jamming against the lid hinge, which I imagine causes much cussing.

Method: Drill out the aluminum rivets (preferred) or cut away/melt the plastic around each rivet away...but preserving the holes. Now your lid is free. Don't throw it out, you are going to modify it. Put the lid back onto the can. Take some rope and thread it through the
holes that you just liberated from the rivets. Now tie off the rope so you create a tight belt around the can with the "buckle" of the lid. To get the ideal diameter of the belt, measure for the diameter of the can, and then make it 5% smaller. Look up some knots for the optimal method, and the knot should probably be on the rear side of the can.

If the rope is tight enough then the lid should "snap" into place and it will not come off during normal lid operations - the rope will be under the lip of the can, as will the" fingers" that are molded into the plastic of the lid. To remove, just a hard tug on the lid should do it.

So this bit of rope gives you 2 things:
1. Lid becomes removable for easy emptying
2. Bag goes over the can securely

You could replace rope with other things, ie. metal banding/buckle, etc. but rope is simplest and cheapest.

The drawback is anyone can swipe the lids now.

Put something a little bigger than a money clip on the rim of the trash can to stop it from falling. Put as many as needed I guess.

OP here.
These are great ideas.
I'm gonna try the x slits/1/2" holes method first.
Purely because it's the quickest method and if it works, I can modify a whole stretch of highway in one day.
If it works, I will indeed make a tribute to the kit holes.

get a larger bag.

attatch to under part of the lid so that when it opens the bag opens and the entire opening is just bing lining.

recommend larger bag so that if it gets bottom heavy it doesnt tear the top of the bag from the lid and rim.

Put two of these in the non-movable part of the lid, maybe 2 inches in from the hinge, with the hook on the inside of the can.

When you wrap your garbage bag, pull the bag to the hooks and punch a hole in the bag to slip over the hooks. When trash goes in it'll pull the bag down against the hook and it should stay put. If it doesn't, bend the hooks in such a way that the bag stays on. Think IV bag hanging.

When you punch the hole, make sure you still roll the edge of the bag a little and put the hole below the roll. That effectively makes the rim/roll of the bag into a thicker, stronger place for the hook to hold and it won't rip the bag open.

Benefits: simple, probably a $2/can fix. Simple to detach the bag. Only modifications are small holes in the lid and a tiny bit of thread/bolt sticking up. Use acorn nuts if you want a smooth, safe top. Should work.

Cons: anybody can steal the hooks. Maybe you can find some sort of rivet solution using the same premise of an internal hook under the fixed part of the lid though, pic related is just the first hook I thought of.
Might also pose an issue if the trash is above the lid, as you'll have to dig under the lid to undo the bag depending on how hooked it is. You might be able to find a happy middle ground of hook bend that still allows you to pull it off at the right angle without falling off.
