So please forgive me. I've recently seen these things pop up, and I'm really interested in making something like this but fir the life of me cannot figure out how. I can only find tutorials on little jewelry things it similar. Can anyone instruct me on how to make something like this?

that looks like a $$$$$$ of epoxy

maybe need a vacuum chamber too?

Not massive logs. Those are just twigs at best.

>>1166321
Look up "Wood Stabilizing". The most equipment you'll need is a vacuum pump (brake bleeder hand pump or kitchen vacuum sealer) and a canning jar with canning jar vacuum attachment. Plus, the resin and an old toaster oven to bake it in.

Once you stabilize the wood you can put it into epoxy like in your pic, but you don't need to since there's a ton of cool things you can do with wood stabilizing.

That's probably 100 bucks worth of epoxy and in my opinion it does not elevate the look of the stump to justify the cost.

But as said above, cylindrical mold, put stump in, pour epoxy, I wouldn't do more than 1/4" at a time, use a heat gun(best investment I made for my epoxy work), repeat til full, let set and then remove from mold.

>>1166360
You will not be able to create a sufficient vacuum with a hand pump to actually degas the epoxy, and you'd just be wasting working time with the epoxy. But an old refrigerator pump, or one bought from HF for like 80 bucks, will.

If the whole thing is 16 inches wide and the log is 12 in diameter, and the whole thing is 18 inches high, that's $250 dollars worth of acrylic epoxy

I get 25inHg with mine. I could get more, but I don't want to bust anything. I simply repeat the process a couple of times, like you are supposed to do, and it works out just fine.

If I wanted to create my own mold, what should I use, and is there anything special I need to put on the sides to keep the resin from sticking?

There are a bunch of radial cracks in OP's logs so I doubt they bothered to stabilize the whole thing.

Burl is fantastic, I have several chunks of it in my garage that I'm planning on cutting and stabilizing with a CLEAR filler. My problem is when people ruin a nice piece of wood to make it 50 ugly plastic like in the picture.

I can already imagine that neon green chunk on the bottom being slapped on a $20 blank and sold for 200 as a zombie apocalypse knife.

because math(its roughly 88 square inches by whatever the height of the piece is, using the dimensions i approximated) and thats what clear acrylic epoxy costs. i buy and use large quantities of it regularly in a similar fashion, though i like i think i get more bang for my buck than the pieces the OP posted

>> No.1167248

>>1166684
im also not a big fan of this, but one of the reasons people do this is because they can take scrap wood, or wood that is too soft to turn, and stabilize it with acrylic so that it is able to be turned. id get doing it yourself if you had the scraps and they're small enough that a small DIY vacuum chamber is all you need, but paying much more than the cost of scraps for such pieces doesnt make much sense to me either

Nice. What wut do with it? I have considered making gun stocks and furniture. So i woukd probably need 55 gallon drums. The good news tho my buddy works at a chemical delivery company and has a drum hoist on hos truck so i can have it delivered to my house.

What size quantities do u buy? Where u get?

>> No.1167803

>>1167796
i wish i had the space to buy and store drums of it. i unfortunately have to buy online usually in 4 gallon quantities(2 gal resin, 2 gal hardener). I buy from eastcoastresin.com and have been satisfied with my results for getting a crystal clear look, though i know a lot of epoxy using wood workers swear by westcoastresin(I dont know why they're both named after their respective coasts).

i use it to make river-esque tables. i initially gave it a shot cutting glass/acrylic sheets myself, but wasnt pleased with the results and it was a lot of work(because i didnt feel like outsourcing the glass, which is the way to do it but i wanted to do it myself). switched to the epoxy resin, for which the process of mixing/pouring took a bit of fine tuning to get it so it'd be more or less crystal clear, and havent looked back

Cool. Thank you for the info. Im sure unless some yuppie citycucks buy into my bullshit i wont be buying much more than you. Got a buddy moving to vegas and working with a lot of what i would call working class rich.

It has been in my experience that bored housewives and wives of military personel are easily 75% of higher end furniture sales. I delivered furniture one time in a town with a military base. I swear to fuck these women move to a temporary house and immediatly need all new furniture and dining sets to start their lives and keep up with the joneses. Easy af target for niche furniture sales.

You find out what the local early to mid 20's year old women are into and you are set anon.

Would love to see some pics of your work.

U use a heat gun for bubbles or just pour carefully?

Heat gun was hands down the best 15 dollar investment i made in this learning process. In terms of resin clarity, using a vacuum chamber to degas before pouring helped, but the heat gun is what turns the surface to glass. I initially used a torch, but found the control with the heat gun infinitely easier, and long run cheaper. Only downside is fan in the heat gun can stir up/blow random small debris into your pour.

I'm Los Angeles based, and some of the furniture pricing at galleries out here is utterly ridiculous. I figure if I can somehow tap into that market, and get my stuff to a sellable level of quality, I'll have a nice little side hustle hobby.

Here's a side table i made for myself a while back

>> No.1168272

as far as your pours, if that's your work there, I would say you're there. But, the base does seem alittle... rachet in comparison to the pourwork it's mounted on.

>> No.1168276

>>1167997
>>1168272

Honestly, didn't have any strong design ideas for the base when I was putting it together. So I threw together the aluminum frame because it was cheap and easy and functional. It's not attached in any permanent way to the table top, so I can swap it out pretty easily.....as soon as I come up with something better. Open to any suggestions, table bases/legs aren't my strong suit design wise but I'm confident in my ability to assemble whatever

Hell yeah anon that's what im talking about!

I know an actor in LA that may be willing to hook u up and maybe even me if i can find niche shit that doesnt compete with u.

Also listen very carefully.

Go find pilot truck stop.

Next door is a bar with beer bottle lids covering the parking lot.

In that parking lot is a roach coach.

Been all over the lower 48 and that mutherfucker makes the best chicken burrito i have ever had.

You owe it to yourself anon.

Also i wanna make sure it's still there and get a truckerbro to haul me a fucking deep freezer full of them to Kansas...

Kek. No earthly idea. Been a decade. If i remember right there are like 3 fucking pilots near la. Pretty sure there is another truck stop across the street. Maybe with a steep ass parking lot?

There is a bomb fucking Mexican place in Fontana near the Central Refrigerated trucking yard. Pretty sure they got the real tequila feom down south too because i had a few shots and woke up ina fucking field the next day with no recollection of how i got there to this day.
