>just got back home from the Ballarat swap meet
>largest swap meet in Australia
>endless stalls of car parts and machinery and other bricabrac
>bought this Honda G200 generator for $50

I don't even know if this thing works and I'm not going to try to start it unless I have gone through every component and completely understand how it works. I have never used a generator in my life and I have exactly 0 /diy/ experience.

So where do I begin to break this thing down and rebuild it? Should I find a service manual online? Are there any good books on generators you can recommend? What do you guys know about generators? Any tips?

find the service manual ( not the owners manual, but you should have that too)

it will have teardown/rebuild procedures, measurements and tolerances, etc.

When it turns over, does it have compression?

If so, pull the plug, clean it, pull the cord a few times to clear any over flow, reinstall plug and pull start. If it doesn't go buy a new plug and some 'Start ya bastard'. It will clear the engine out good. Fresh fuel too and it is probably a 2 stroke so for the love of god check first and don't run without oil!

Sounds like heaven, wish we had something like that in Sydney.

I don't know much, but I would be swapping the spark plug to begin with, while you have it out check you have spark by putting the cap back on, sitting the plug against the block and pulling the starter, look for a spark in the gap or between the block and the body of the plug.

Air filter looks to be in good condition, but pull it off and make sure the inlet of the carb looks nice and clean. Grit and debris may indicate it's eaten some dirt, which may require a tear down. Not terribly complex but you'll definitely need a guide for the carb if you need to go down that path.

Pull off the fuel tank, unscrew the fuel tap (if fitted), throw a handful of rice and half a liter of petrol in, put the lid back and shake the shit out of it. This will clean out all the debris from the bottom of tank and ensure you're getting clean fuel. Tip it all out (ideally, onto cement so the fuel does not go into the ground, and so you can sweep the rice up so critters done eat it and get fucked up) rinse it out with the hose (or more fuel if you have enough to waste) and let it sit to dry for a few days. Replace the fuel hose, take the existing one to a mower shop, they'll sell you a length.

If you can get eyes on it, check where the driveshaft leaves the engine block for signs of oil, this can indicate rooted bearings. If all looks well now, check it after your first hour or two of operation. Previous leaks may have dried.

Work out its rated load, then try to run a 80% load test on it by hanging incandescent lights and other high watt loads off it. I use a few 250W floodlights, adding them one by one till I approach the rated output. Make sure it doesn't stall.

It's old, but it appears to have been treated with respect, no major dents or scuffs and no missing bolts from what I can see. I'd be confident to try and run it as it stands, but I would also make the above checks once I knew it ran.

Its a honda, so its probably just had shitty old petrol in it.

Take off carb. Dump a fuck load of clutch cleaner in it. Swish out tank. Replace lines.

Then;

Take out spark plug, put to body, give the cord a rip to check for spark. If its all good, then stick to together, check oil, fuel, run it.

op, a lot of people have chimed in on the gas engine side of things but before trying to run it pull the cover off the genhead and check to see if the brushes and springs are free, commutator is smooth, and all the armature windings are tight. if any of those things are bad the first time you pull the cord you could wreck the head.

Mate it's a honda, take the bowl off the carb, clean out any shit in there, replace the fuel filter and clean out the tank if dirty. Put some fuel in and it'll probably start right up.

Yeah, this happened badly to Glebe and Roselle markets. Both used to be pretty good for all sorts of odd gear, now they are mainly fashion markets. Only one I knew of that comes close to OP's market was the HAM radio swap meets up at Gosford Racecourse, but even those have died off. God fucking damn that was a goldmine of retropute and radio gear.

I know of most of those linked markets, but they are full of hipster trash selling upcycled pallets and chinese junk importers. I have literally seen three stalls selling identical merchandise at Carlingford. We just need a "blokes" market badly. Tools and tech. Next time I'm in Melbourne I'ma roadtrip out and check this place out.

Also, OP, don't know if you ever thought to google "Honda G200 service manual" but turns out Honda host a shop manual for the engine, which will tell you all you need to know about tolerances, adjustments and servicing.

Not sure about the generator side, but if you google its make/model you might hit paydirt.
