How would you go about waterproofing a small device with a charging port? I want to make a water-resistant (lets say it needs to survive submerging in a cup of tap water) electronic device, with at least one port to charge it (preferably micro USB, as it will contain digispark, but it can be pretty much anything). The water-resistance should be as reliable as possible, so no flaps. How did Sony made their Xperia Z line phones submersible while having no flaps on audio jack, an from Z5 not even on micro USB?

I used to have a cheapshit little prepaid phone called a Kyocera Hydro Air.

When you took the back of the phone off there was a small cover you could open to insert SIM/micro SD card. The battery was unremovable with the plastic cover on the back, the back was held on with tiny Phillips head screws. After removing the back cover, I found the way they water proofed the phone was with a small gasket that surrounded the plastic cover. The gasket was kept on with adhesive.

I know it's kind of hard to imagine with my description. Look up Kyocera hydro air and maybe Google could give you some visualisation. Maybe you can seal your battery cover with some type of gasket? Would be annoying if you ever wanted to take it off if you needed to do something with the battery.

Now as far as the screen goes, that would be difficult. I can't think of many ways to seal the screen without making the phone look ugly. Are you building this phone, OP?

You google for waterproof micro-usb connector, you find a ton of different ones available COTS, you put them in a waterproof enclosure.

As for how they stay waterproof, the connections from the metal parts are brought into the device through solid plastic. There is no reason for any open path to exist from the outside of the connector to the inside, so they don't have them.

How about wireless charging? Checked quickly, you can get ones made for phones for a few dollars, that have micro usb in one end.

Try the company Liquipel. They waterproof electronics by nanocoating the devices with a hydrophobic compound. You can still use the USB port normally and for all intents and purposes can't even tell anything is different. They're fairly cheap. Should privacy be a concern they provide an at-home spray similar to an aerosol can.
