Was alright.
Its nice to have a full hour of show without commercials, nice to have filming in the pit. Too bad the pit filming and the announcers were kinda dull in front of the camera.

I think they edited the fights up worse than battlebots did. Instant replay, obvious fake bot sounds, way worse pumped in crowd noise.

I dont like the fact that 4 bots get eliminated without actually getting a 1 on 1 match, and I dont really like the round robin style tournament. Had to watch a shitty bot fight multiple battles because he lucked in. But things will get pretty good once the final single elimination bracket comes out.

I dont really like the pit, and I dont like house bots doing tangible damage to the contestants. One of these matches, a housebot is going to disable a bot, and that is horse shit.
Other than that it was a pretty enjoyable show

>> No.1027792

>>1026897
It's kind of a joke to me, really. I'll watch it, but I fast-forward through the talk-talk-talk, I don't care about their backgrounds or whatever shit they have to say, I just want to see mechanical carnage.

I remember the original 'Battlebots' that was on, what TLC or Discovery Channel? I forget now.. nothing much has changed since then, design-wise. There are a handful of proven designs, and those always win. On THIS show, they upped the ante a little, by having some flying contraptions (which never do shit) and allowing things like fire (which also really doesn't do shit, either). There are always dumbshits with fancy-ass looking contraptions, that go up against the more conventional, proven designs, and get systematically dismanted in a matter of seconds. There's only been one or two instances where my predictions on outcome were wrong, and they were because someone either had better tactical sense than the other guy, or someone cheaped out on their vehicle and got the crap kicked out it for their trouble.

Really it comes down to heavy-spinny-thing 'bots, and flipper-bots (of various kinds). Both are hard to beat. Of course this last week there was some fool with a nice, heavy-duty spinny-thing weapon.. mounted on a base that was WAY TOO FUCKING LIGHT, and as soon as it was up to speed and made a first attack, it LITERALLY went flying across the room. Dumbass.

You want to make an unstoppable 'bot for something like this? Heavy, hardened, high-speed, well-supported spinning weapon, mounted on a nice, thick, heavy base, with hidden wheels, and nice thick armor on the sides. It's like a Viking berzerker warrior with a battleaxe; you get that thing up to speed before anyone can get inside your weapons range, and it's a foregone conclusion that anyone coming near enough is going to get torn to pieces.

Of course that's too boring for network television, so they'd probably reject your application.

>> No.1027803

>>1027792
That was chromefly vs bronco. I guess another problem was that the spinning blades were mounted directly to the motors and fixed only on one side. Also why you'd use two light ones instead of one heavy is besides me.

Also you could wee that the blades broke on the points where they made holes in them to lower the weight.

>> No.1027808

Rob Everhart sought out to make the most dangerous machine ever to enter the Battlebox, and he certainly succeeded. However, since he's from the old school, he never gained a proper appreciation for high-rpm high-MOI weapons, modern speed controllers and motors, and most significantly, LiPo batteries. I saw him several times in the pits removing LiPos from his frame and arcing the leads off of each other while he did it, which on these high voltage, high discharge packs is a great way to fuck all sorts of shit up.

I would have loved to have seen it fight, but Trey still has some leftover paranoia from Season 5 when Nightmare threw someone out of the roof and Lockjaw and Vladiator knocked out some of the walls. There's a big crisis going on it the community right now with respect to arena breaches, and the last thing Trey and Greg want is ANOTHER lawsuit.

So yeah, I think they were right to get passed over from a safety standpoint, but I would have rather seen it fight. From the safety of the next building over.

those arms were on pivots, like a flail mower.
compared to a solid bar there's less impact transmitted back to the spindle and power train, so in exchange for a less brutal impact (it only hits with the weight of the flail not the weight of the whole rotating assembly) your motor doesn't get ripped up by sudden stalls, and you're unlikely to accidentally launch yourself.

my gut feeling is that even with that 'sensible' bit of design, hellachopper had way too much weapon and not enough wheelbase. the flails don't pivot vertically, so if one flail was kicked up by hitting a vertical spinner drum or shallow wedge armour, the opposite side would bite into the floor and the whole mess would stand up on edge and take off like a wheel skeleton.

>>1033858
too much high power, man.

>> No.1033893

>>1033813
I think he started with the flail design, then designed the sword arms to fit the same base and still be effective. I'm pretty sure his design limitations went something like 1. Fits the current base 2. Looks Badass and 3. Can hit someone, not really giving a damn about survival.

>>1033858
Unless I'm mistaken, I think his weapon was 2x Ampflow A28-400-F48 running at 12s LiPo. That's a good 20hp of potential motor run through controllers that are maybe only good for 15 of that, so it's no wonder he caught fire a few times.

The real trick with these high-MOIs is to 1. Use a contactor instead of a controller and 2. Use A123 cells, as their higher internal resistance means less amps and also they don't catch fire, just get really unhappy. Works well enough for Tombstone!

We got a new shredder at work today that kinda rekindled my lust for robo destruction. A design has been kicking around my head for a while, any thoughts?

Forgive my crappy paint drawing, crappy phone cam and no scanner, much better with graph paper and a pencil.

The black parts are the chassis. The dark red circles would be the wheels, the solid one being optional or replaced with a caster. The bright red circles are carbide sawblades, and the light blue squares are lances (pneumatic, electromagnetic, whatever works).

Everything will be moved and adjusted for weight distribution and parts clearance of course.

The carbide blades have a gap of about 4-6 inches in between to minimize jamming. They are both turning inward (the right side turning clockwise, the left counterclockwise).

The front lance is mostly there to clear large pieces from between the blades. There will be a shunt behind the blades to funnel any debris out and to the sides.

The rear lance is entirely optional.

The rear profile is mostly there to give an idea of the outer shape. Low to the ground, heaviest armor on the top and bottom, angled extensions on the side (hopefully angled properly so that downward strikes are more likely to glance off). Wheels run through the body, exposed on both sides so the bot can flip over and still drive. Internal tilt switch to automatically reverse the controls so the driver doesn't have to reverse the sticks to drive it. Standard skid steer operation.

In terms of armor, depending on feasabilty and legality, I'm thinking a laminate. A hard, but fairly thin outer layer designed to give a little bit under impact. Beneath that a layer of thick, tough fiber. This would dampen and impact, plus should the outer skin be breached by any kind of sawing, grinding or ripping tool, it would likely clog the tool (the way chainsaw chaps work) last would be a thick, hard spall liner.

240vdc shouldn't jump around and rek shit all by itself, but it'll sustain a huge arc once you strike it.
and if you pwm 240v into an inductive motor winding without an adequate snubber and then find the brown note, you'll get pulses of kilovolts back out. just like the hf arc starter on a dc tig or a plasma cutter.

Chomp's biggest issue was that it was designed to run with magnets providing down force. The arena had a thicker rubber coating than both them and road rash were anticipating and thus the magnets didn't work. This forced Chomp to run FAR from full power and to still flip itself over none stop.

Also since some will find interesting the other robot that had big issues due to the arena floor road rash had some odd magnetic field stuff that was meant to make it move across the floor.

Consider a simple 1" vertical steel bar well connected to a heavy chassis at the same distance to the centre of gravity of a bot as the tip of the blade of the spinner. You aren't going to tear that to pieces.

Pound for pound you can defensive structures much stronger than the spinner, which needs to worry about a bearing. Spinners win because people keep making flimsy shit available to be hit by spinners.
