We had amazing threads last season.

Also Stinger is gonna take it all the way this time.
Remember he is the tombstone killer, in that other com bot competition thing.

Tombstone is super vulnerable from behind.
That said, it and Bronco are probably the only two that have a chance against Minotaur.

Although, I could see Witch Doctor pulling a victory, too.

>> No.1013171

>>1013166
I didnt see with doctor.
Is it the same exact bot?

Their big problem was being a small bot, because their allocated too much of their weight to a not so mini, mini bot.

>> No.1013175

>>1013171
They didn't fight tonight, but yeah.
Looks to be the same from what I've seen.

The only reasons I think they could take on Minotaur is because they basically have the same kind of weapon.
Also, they fucking ate the shots they took from Tombstone last year- to the point of breaking the goddamn blade.

We'll see what happens, I guess.

What do you guys think of my spinner design?
My rendering here looks autistic as fuck, but the main idea is that you can't get close enough to attack it before it hits you.

Also, each half serves a separate purpose.
Bottom half holds all the necessities for the wheels and RC bullshit.
Top half hold the motor that drives the blade.

"How can you make it with two sets of wheels and only one half dedicated to them?" you might ask.
Easy.
Reverse wiring through the center of the pole the blade centers on.

Seriously considering building this.
Thoughts?

>> No.1013201

How do you plan on attaching the top to the bottom. It seems tricky to do while keeping it stiff and strong enough to take throwing the bot around.

Basically a thick rod through the middle.
The blade wouldn't be a rectangle all the way through like in the picture.
It be more like pic related- with a circular center to allow for strength.
The rod running through it that would also relay the drive system would have about the dimensions in pic related.
Thick enough to take damage but with a cored out center to allow passthrough.

A few more things would be different too- like how quickly it could turn and whatnot.

>> No.1013847

the kick ass weapons were defined by the rules and the rules were defined because they felt they needed a studio audience.

They should have no-rules and just have a weight-class limit and a fire-arms/explosives list like 'I have A/B and will also fight A/B' or even 'I don't have A/B but will still fight A/B' Big fight in the desert, distances/height advantage by random draw.

Would be much better. Rules now are retarded and lead to certain designs being clearly butt-rapingly superior so that it's not even fun to watch two wedges bump into each other when what made the series awesome was the crazy guy trying to use a warhammer attached to an arm trying to hit a wedge.

What if you made it out of a metal that can be affected by magnets?
Instead of connecting it to a chain or belt to drive it, which seem to break all the time, simply have an electromagnet pointed at one end of the blade in order to assure that it keeps moving after being hit.

It would also assure that big hits don't stop your blade from spinning.

>a literally what bot

A strong vertical spinner, vs one of the worst full body spinners I have seen in a long time. It takes forever to spin down while its teeth do very little damage. Its a really crappy bot.
It may do some damage to hypershock, but its not going to disable him before knocking himself out.
Its a stupidly unstable full body that doesnt even have the sheer power that other full bodies do.

As for Stinger and Tombstone, the design has been proven to be a very effective "spinner killer"
Just because they moved up in weight class doesnt suddenly mean that the design is going to stop working.

The two drivers are friends IRL, they have fought with different bots many many times.
The problem is Tombstone cant really do anything to prepare for Stinger. Its pretty much its final form.
Stinger can greatly modify its body to be ready for it. He knows very well what he has to do to beat him. Its not a guessing game at this point, like it would be with a rookie who has never fought a bot like it.

The only one that im iffy on is Icewave vs Bite Force
Bite force totally took a ton of heavy hits from Tombstone, and it didnt phase him.

Icewave in season 1, his blade very clearly would slow down and take a long time to spool back up after a hit.
In season 2 he already had his blade completely stall
Its all filmed in a 3 day period, that means Icewave may have sustained some serious damage from stalling since its an ICE weapon.

im just not convinced that Icewave is going to roll right over him, especially if there was damage needing repaired in the prelim fights.

Nightmare usually loses because he smashes some bot and flips himself and gets counted out while the other bot desperately tries to prove it's not dead by spinning in circles on it's one remaining half functioning wheel.

This year nightmare can work upside down.

Thank feminism and desperate attempts to show how progressive battlebots is with stronk womyn for Megatento getting a wild card. Shit bot, with a shit driver doesn't get a wildcard for "showing potential."

Same show that rejected M.O.E for bein too similar to tombstone and not having enough personality. Considering Tombstone is based off of M.O.E, and Ray doesn't act like the massive dick he does in battlebots in any of the other robot events it's obvious Battlebots is choosing a flashy story over a good bot.

And Mobius did better in original battlebots than tentomushi ever did, and still has more potential then Tento this year, which is sad considering its a spinbot that self destructed like literally every spinbot ever. I just hope it goes against something destructive so they can't just take it home and wait for next year without building a new one.

In fairness to Tento it somehow deserved a spot more than The ever evolving luck raptor, who literally got lucky ever single fight last year and then this year didn't do anything. All he did in his match was walk in cocky like he wasn't afraid of SOW, get it by SOW a bunch and then self destruct. Did not land a single hit in it's match and was in pieces at the end. WILDCARD

>>1016346
I don't think it's rigged, I just mean there's people talking about how when Ray is yelling "One more?" was because Bronco driver was yelling something along the lines of keep going. The other moments of him asking if robots want hit again was because they kept moving, In all his non Battlebots fights he rarely hits anyone who stops moving. Moving suggests you haven't given up, dudes literally asking if they are willing to take more hits. He also in interviews pre-battlebots talks about being worried about fights, especially against Stinger's driver because he's a good, aggressive, and sporadic driver.

Then battlebots comes and he's like IM GOING TO KILL EVERYTHING IM THE BEST, YOU WANT SOME MORE?

I'm ranting though, I'm genuinely worried about the sport because of the way its being handled. The robot fighting is still, and will always be good, but this fake drama and characters shit will kill it. I don't want that to happen.

Nah dude its not rigged.

The only part that I could see being "rigged" is the seeding and wildcard. But even at that point the competition is so unpredictable.
The seeding will "rig" it to the point you see good bots beating the mediocre bots in the early rounds, and the top tier bots battle it out later on.

This is filmed in a 3 day period, its really fast and really crazy.

Realize that they just bulk film everything those 3 days, then retroactively film stuff to fit their story.

Have you ever seen a reality TV show?
Think about survivor, they film people 20 hours a day for 30 days doing mundane shit 95% of the time.
They edit the living fuck out of it to create narrative, to create villains and heroes and people you love and feel sorry for.

With the bot battles, you watch how the whole competition went down and then edit the footage to create the narrative you want.

Ray Billings didnt actually do anything to be a "villain" in the first season.
The WHOLE villain image came from his cutaway interviews that were filmed away from the competition. He actually said that he was asked to be a villain and he didnt mind it, hence why they filmed him saying cocky stuff and evil laughing.

After you have created characters in the first season, they obviously feel somewhat invested in their characters and want to bring them back.
It also makes it easy to continue with the characters in season 2.
I mean they already fabricated a "come out of retirement" grudge match.

There is so much stock footage of people laughing, looking bored, looking upset from just their bulk filming. They can make you look however they want
Watch this video and you can see how crazy light editing can be to create narrative

Nah
ABC is trying to create brands for bots, like reality TV or wrestling.
They want to start selling toys and shit again.

Its making the battlebots brand kind of lame, but its not going to hurt the actual sport.
If anything, its going to create more popularity for existing competitions. Maybe make some more.

Mo parts means mo things to fail. Motors weigh much more than motor controllers. and while I've seen wiring up the middle of the shaft work before, most of the time it doesn't. My preference is to have two isolated systems for top and bottom.

One of our guys has a 30lber that fights with a sword and it's always hilarious to watch, and the crowd loves it. I guess a big thing that people arn't realizing about this season is that it's a TV show about robot fighting for your entertainment, rather than robot fighting filmed for TV. Blacksmith was great as fuck to watch, but mildly effective, so that's a little what I'm aiming towards.

>>1020255
The big problem I see you having is rectifying the length of your blade with the base of your robot. You might be better off with a 2wd on top and bottom and little skid plates on the front and back to save weight and reduce footprint.

What weight class were you thinking about? 3lbs is really popular, and relatively cheap to get into.

I personally don't believe in titanium, but shit adds up, especially when you have to do desperate last-minute fixes the week before ship. That extra $50 for shipping is really worth it if it buys you more time.

Those pictures are more just so I don't forget my idea.

As for the 2wd, you're probably right.
I see a lot of spinners, both horizontal and vertical, using that instead.

It'd have to be Heavyweight, almost.
The weight of the blade alone would set you past lightweight, and middleweight bots don't seem solid enough to survive getting flipped most of the time.

I'm probably wrong though.

There's always been a bias against combat robotics from FIRST all the way up to the top, and that has actually prevented MIT from having an official team until now. I'd say the biggest common factor between teams was "owning a machine shop" or "being a mechanical engineer"

The original "robot wars" and Battlebots were both in the mid 90s

The UK version that was fagged up for television came after battlebots had already started, and was a clear deviation from the original robot wars competition.

So its all a perspective thing. The original robot wars predates battlebots by a couple years, but the UK one was after.

The big concern is that the new rules are going to turn the competition into BBIQ, which is 15lbers fighting each other with an active weapon requirement. All of them end up being clones of each other's vertical spinners.

>> No.1026619

>>1026598
Shouldn't you be able to defend vertical spinners the same way as horizontal spinners? Just let them hit something hard and stablee until they take care of themself, like chromefly did. >> No.1026626

>>1026619
There are a couple of approaches, but they usually take a fair amount of driving skill. One of our guys does very well with close-to-the ground horizontal discs that catch the vertical right as it starts the up-swing. The result is that they get thrown up by their own force + the horizontals.

The Blacksmith/Minotaur fight shows Blacksmith doing a pretty good job with his wedge, but the second it started fraying the fight was over. The real problem comes in with people like Minotaur who have been building the same robot for over a decade, and they've got reliability down completely.

Also the vertical spinners that really pack a punch like minotaur are hard to steer due to the gyroscopic forces, if you're fast and agile enough you probably could keep getting around it.

Also a more general questions: Do the size limits only apply to how a not enters the fight? Could you theoretically build something that deploys quite high legs after the fight starts? Something like pic related, just with more legs. Would be funny if someone build something like that and then harpoons his enemy from like 2m above.

Warhead sucks dick. The thing nearly self destructs all the time. It has pointless arms that do nothing. Only good for breakdancing.

Can't it self right with the arms?

Solid, braced 4mm thick titanium all the way though. It was nothing to be trifled with!

And you're right about maneuverability, I know a few guys that win out at vertical spinning matches because they're smaller, easier to control, and spin faster with harder blades. They're less effective at common bots though, so it's a tradeoff.

No size limits other than 'can your robot fit through the door'. The only person I know hwo has ever had an issue with this is Hal Rucker from Ringmaster. His robot "Crazy Susan" for season five was a little excessive

But this is a television show, and sometimes the most entertaining robots are the ones that blow themselves up =^)

, they seem to have the S2 flamethrower emerge through the arms in the spinner configuration. And they breakdance pretty damn well.

BB has a rule against entanglement weapons - nets, ball bearings and such. But we've seen that you can bring ablative armor (Plan X) and minibots designed to jam up people's drivetrains/weapons (nuisance bots from SOW, CC) by soaking hits/driving underneath them. Where's the line drawn? Could you bring a swarm of minibots in addition to your main bot that essentially replicated the function of a bunch of ball bearings?

You're ruining my season 3 plans!

In all seriousness, the rules for the last two seasons have been pretty handwavy. As long as it doesn't LOOK or perform intentionally like entanglement to the producers, it should be fine.

It's almost as if they are doing everything to decrease views at the moment, now they've started region locking the fresh youtube videos.

Yuuup I really hope that doesn't happen, BotsIQ is fairly boring at this point due to that.

Also the BotsIQ officials can eat a bag of dicks, their rules at this point also encourage the never ending stream of drum and beater bots.
