Really need like at least $1000 to get into HF.
$500 transceiver
$150 power supply
$50+ coax
$100+ antenna like G5RV
I'm quite fond of running two tuners, autotuner one at the base of the antenna, or going with ridiculously thick coax to the antenna to minimize SWR loss.
Personally I find more satisfaction in tuning my station than talking to people so FT8 is my go-to.
Built a 0-1ghz wideband 'signal strength' chip that had like a 90db range. Slapped a screen on it and used the example circuit to make a 1kw to sub microwatt meter. Kinda cool seeing air static or whatever getting picked up on the meter.
