Making a nixie of VFD tube clock wouldn't be hard if you had a kit and soldering skills with a bit of background in electronics. Its a bit harder to design one yourself, especially if you're going to have it microcontroller controlled.

Ordering a couple of these to play with this week, super cheap and easy to wire up. If I decide to control it with an AVR I'll have to use PWM or something.

Yeah, super awesome. I'm thinking of putting on the face of my clock, horizontally. My avr has more than enough GPIO's to drive all of the tubes I want.
